Make The Call To Ensure Police Do Not Violate Rights

President Trump took executive action yesterday encouraging the Army Corps of Engineers to override environmental review and speed up construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline near the Standing Rock Sioux Indian Reservation. His action is a slap in the face to the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and water protectors.

Any day now, law enforcement may try to disperse water protectors with unnecessary and dangerous use of force. But North Dakota has a new governor – and a chance to avoid the mistakes of its last governor.

Call North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum and urge him to do everything in his power to remove the road blockade and prevent police violence against Standing Rock water protectors.

With resilience, water protectors have already endured militarized crackdowns, police abuse, and daily intimidation – simply for defending their water rights.

All eyes were on Standing Rock late last year as unwarranted armored vehicles rolled in. Law enforcement used automatic rifles, sound cannons, and concussion grenades against water protectors. An estimated 300 protesters were injured in November when police in riot gear used water cannons for hours in subfreezing weather to disperse them.

Personnel and equipment pouring in from over 75 law enforcement agencies from around the country and National Guard troops created a battlefield-like atmosphere at Standing Rock. Escalated police militarization was used to intimidate and silence water protectors’ free speech and their right to protest a pipeline that passes near sovereign territory.

Tell Governor Burgum not to make the former governor’s grave mistakes in sanctioning the abuse of water protectors.

A whopping 253,000 ACLU supporters called on the Justice Department to investigate possible constitutional and federal law violations by law enforcement at the Dakota Access pipeline. We teamed up with Amnesty International, CREDO Action, and National Council of Jewish Women to deliver that demand to the Justice Department in December.

Now we need you again. Make this crucial call to Governor Burgum – tell him to keep water protectors safe from police violence.

Thanks for standing in solidarity,
Anthony for the ACLU Action team
