DESCRIPTION:Do you think the Oregon Constitution gives you the right to a safe and healthy environment? If so\, think again. As an Oregonian\, you do not. Even though the constitutions of more than three quarters of the countries on earth have explicit reference to environmental rights or responsibilities\, in the United States\, only if you live in Hawaii\, Illinois\, Massachusetts\, Montana\, Pennsylvania\, or Rhode Island\, is your right to a healthy environment constitutionally protected. \nThe Oregon Coalition for an Environmental Rights (OCERA) Amendment seeks to remedy this oversight. Melissa Martin\, Coordinator of the educational and ballot initiative efforts of OCERA will be visiting the Rogue Valley from March 31 through April 2 to offer a series of programs during which she will explore ‘Why an Environmental Rights Amendment’ and invite area residents to offer personal stories\, testimonies\, and feedback regarding local and regional environmental harms we have experienced from government action\, or perhaps inaction. \nSouthern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN) is hosting a discussion on this issue at its March General Meeting with a guest speaker from Oregon Coalition for an\nEnvironmental Rights Amendment (OCERA). The meeting is a free\, public gathering. The meeting will be structured as a listening session focused on the Oregon Environmental Rights Amendment and its relevance to climate action. https://www.oceraunited.org/ \nRather than a traditional lecture\, this gathering will center community voices\, questions\, and concerns about what environmental rights mean in practice and how constitutional protections could shape climate policy\, accountability\, and long-term stewardship. Register here. The threats to federal education programs have become acute. Funds for PELL grants\, title I and disability programs are at risk in the Trump/Musk Administration. The proposed termination of the Dept of Education will weaken other school programs. Though organizations representing teachers and educators\, including NEA\, AFT and AAUP\, have come together to resist the proposed cuts\,\, it remains difficult to reach parents\, who generally lack statewide organizations. Their local school district organizations rarely address the federal budget.

SUMMARY:Celebrate the Release of Leonard Peltier
DESCRIPTION:Join Leonard Peltier’s son\, Chauncey Peltier\, and for a community potluck\, singing\, drumming\, flute music\, and dancing to honor Leonard Peltier’s release from Federal imprisonment. Leonard Peltier\, an American Indian activist\, was imprisoned for nearly half a century after he was convicted for the 1975 killings of two FBI agents. President Joe Biden commuted Peltier’s sentence following decades of community-led advocacy calling his imprisonment an example of the U.S. government’s mistreatment of Native Americans. The commutation is not a pardon for crimes committed\, a decision some of Peltier’s advocates welcomed since he has always maintained his innocence. Peltier\, who is now 80 and of declining health\, will transition to home confinement. The celebration is sponsored by Southern Oregon Indian Center; Takelma Cultural Center; Multicultural Association of Southern Oregon; Table Rock Foundation; and Red Earth Descendants.

This is especially the case for our potential to address\nthe climate crisis when some candidates for office accept the science of global warming and it\nclimate change consequences while others display something between skepticism and outright\nrejection of science. From the local to the national level the outcomes from the 2024 general\nelection will indicate profoundly whether meaningful action is likely. \nThe Southern Oregon Climate Action Now November General Meeting will focus on an\nexploration of what the election results mean for climate action in the near future. Special guest\nand notable climate champion State Representative Pam Marsh will offer insight regarding what\nthe election outcome means for climate action as we approach the 2025 long session.\nAdditionally\, SOCAN co-facilitator. SUMMARY:Homelessness in Our Region: Jefferson Center Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Echo Fields\, retired SOU professor of sociology\, will join the Jefferson Center for a discussion of Homelessness in our Region. The discussion will focus on key issues relating to homelessness. \nThese include: problems in gathering reliable data on the homeless population; how this information relates to stereotypes about homelessness arising from stigma\, emotion\, and punitive impulses; what needs to change in our social systems in order to implement solutions to homelessness; and what kinds of actions individuals and non-profit organizations might undertake. \nBlaming and trying to change homeless individuals is unlikely to resolve the problem\, and such approaches let “comfortable people” off the hook for the need for system changes. Changing these intersecting social systems takes time and requires collaboration among government\, non-profit organizations and citizen volunteers. \nHow do we get there? The program will be held in the Jefferson Center space\, suite 101\, in the Old Armory Building\, 208 Oak St.\, in Ashland. Light refreshments will be served.
