SUMMARY:SOCAN Monthly Meeting: Curb Food Waste for the Climate
DESCRIPTION:Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN) will feature guest speakers and a discussion about what people can do to help curb food waste in Southern Oregon March 28 at 6:00 p.m. online. \nIn 2022\, the U.S. department of Agriculture stated: “Food loss and waste … exacerbates the climate crisis with its significant GHG footprint. Production\, transportation\, and handling of food generate significant carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions\, and when food ends up in landfills\, it generates methane\, [which is] an even more potent greenhouse gas.” \nA 2021 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency report concluded that “each year\, U.S. food loss and waste embodies 170 million metric tons of climate pollution– equal to the annual CO2 emissions of 42 coal-fired power plants.” This doesn’t even take landfill methane into account. \nTo learn more about food waste and what we can do to address it\, join Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN) at their March 28th General Meeting online from 6:00 to 7:00pm. This month’s topic is “Food Waste and the Climate Crisis: What to Know & What to Do” with featured speakers Flavia Franco of Southern Oregon Food Solutions\, Jeanette Hardison of the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition\, and Ellie Cosgrove of Rogue Valley Farm 2 School. \nThere is no charge for joining the ZOOM meeting\, but participants must register at the link on the SOCAN calendar event: socan.eco/food-waste. \nIn response to the food waste problem April 10 – 16 has been designated as ‘Food Waste Prevention Week’ nationwide. In order to raise awareness and to engage with folks about solutions. Oregon’s Department of Environmental Quality is a sponsor of this campaign.

DESCRIPTION:V-Day Is the global activist movement to end violence against all women (cisgender and transgender)\, gender diverse people\, girls and the planet.  It was begun by Eve Ensler\, and has now grown into a global grassroots organization called One Billion Rising. One Billion Rising is the biggest mass action to end violence against women in human history. Originally designed to focus awareness on the violence experienced by women and girls\, the mission has expanded to include violence against all marginalized groups. \nPlease join local community leaders in Ashland on February 14\, 2023 for our local event in solidarity with the many other actions around the world that will be held on that day. The event is designed to bring us together in dance and song\, focusing awareness on the violence experienced by women\, girls\, cisgender\, transgender\, gender non-conforming\, BIPOC\, Jewish\, Asian\, those in poverty and by the many other marginalized people in our community. \nTogether\, we will create a joyful\, creative celebration of our diversity\, express our solidarity by denouncing the violence that many of our marginalized community members experience.  The event will include the community flash mob dance protesting domestic violence; BREAK THE CHAIN\, which is performed across the world\, as well as music\, powerful speakers\, and educational booths. \nParticipants include: \nMarta Quest and a drumming circle of women will start the evening off followed by Lisa Ebony\, who will sing SAY HER NAME.  Lisa is the leader of the Ashland BIPoC Sanctuary and co-host of Ashland’s local community radio station KSKQ including The Chop Shop and Friday Nights music show\, The Music That Makes Us. \nDr. Louise Paré\, global women’s spirituality educator and author will speak about the current situation of Ukrainian women and girls regarding human and sex trafficking. \nAlicia Gerrity: SOU student body president\, will perform BODYlogues which creates a brave and liberating space that addresses systems of privilege\, hierarchies of power\, societal mistreatment of bodies\, and the expectations placed upon them. Through this\, BODYlogues seeks to challenge toxic cultural expectations and promote full autonomy\, Sovereignity\, bodily acceptance and pride. \nWomen With Wings choir and the Holy Misfits will be lifting us up with their harmonies! \nEducational booths will include Community Works Domestic Violence\, Sexual Assault and Sex Trafficking Resource Center; SART the sexual assault response team; SOPride and “Breaking Trafficking Traps” in Ukraine. Water League\, which engages the public Water stewardship\, is collaborating with SOPA to support the next steps that individuals and action groups can take to make a difference in the Rogue Basin. \nMore than 200 people\, including Indigenous wisdom keepers\, panelists from across the state of Oregon\, and citizens concerned for the efficient and beneficial use of the Rogue Valley’s water met over the course of the 6-part Water Solutions Summit series. \nFour action teams (cohorts) emerged from the summit that are critical to the health and well-being of our valley’s water. DESCRIPTION:Join Southern Oregon Climate Actin Now November 29 to learn about what’s next after midterms.\n\n\nFrom SoCAN:\nElections have consequences; the result of the 2022 mid-term election could be dramatic at all levels. The Yale Program on Climate Change Communication reported that as of February 2022 74% of Oregonians think global warming is happening and 66% are worried about it. The data also suggest that 63% think Congress should do more about it\, while 53% think the President and the Governor should do more.  Nevertheless\, as the election approached\, polls consistently showed that the climate crisis ranked well below other more immediate pocket book issues in the minds of voters across the country\, with an array of other issues featuring more prominently in the public mind as critical to their voting choices. \nWe know that individual action and commitment is critical as a prerequisite for local\, state and federal action\, but even when voters acknowledge the urgency of acting on the climate crisis\, that recognition is not always translated into electoral action. The 2022 mid-terms represented a critical moment when voters were able to express the level of their concern by electing candidates who acknowledge the crisis and commit to action. \nThe November SOCAN general public meeting program will be devoted to exploring the results of the 2022 election and assessing how they hamper or contribute to our local\, state\, and national effort to address the climate crisis. \nDetails\, including registration – SOCAN Calendar

DESCRIPTION:Trans* Storytelling Circles\nConnect with other rural trans folks and celebrate trans lives in Southern Oregon!\n\n*Anyone who identifies as part of the trans community and lives or has lived in Southern Oregon is welcome! \nDescription: Trans* community\, let’s get together! The LGBTQ+ Listening Project is hosting a series of story circles to build relationships among trans* folks who live or have lived in southern OR and create more of a sense of community and connection. Given the high level of anti-trans activity happening nationwide\, we want to make space that is nourishing and celebratory. \nWhat is a story circle? A story circle is a group of people sitting in a circle and telling personal stories\, led by a facilitator. We all have stories worth telling and hearing. This is a space to meet each other and celebrate our stories! The themes of the circles will be home\, community\, safety\, transformation and celebration. \n*We are using trans* as a shorthand but this space is inclusive of Two Spirit\, genderqueer\, nonbinary\, etc.\, while recognizing these are separate identities & not all gender diverse people identify as trans. We welcome folks who would benefit from participating in this space. \nWhile we are grateful for community support\, this is not a space for allies/listeners/supportive cisgender community members. Our hope is that these circles will lead to future storytelling projects where we share our stories with our communities in ways that are liberatory and supportive to us.
