DESCRIPTION:KSKQ Community Radio and the Ashland Community Peace Meal invite the community to a summer music folk and rock festival on August 9th at the Lithia Park Bandshell starting at 6 pm. \nBroadway Phil and the Shouters will open the festival with get-on-your-feet rock and roll. From Jacksonville\, Oregon\, Broadway Phil and the Shouters have been rocking concerts and clubs for over twenty years\, drawing on the influence of Blues\, R&B\, Tex-Mex and Roots Rock. David Rovics and Kamala Emanuel will perform at 7 pm with socially conscious folk music. \nRovics and Emanual and will be singing songs of solidarity and social significance. They are in the first stages of their Minister of Culture world tour. Pre-performance music will begin at 5 pm following the Community Peace Meal. Local musicians will entertain the crowd prior to Broadway Phils performance at 6 pm. \nThe performances are free of charge. DESCRIPTION:Monday July 29th  7:00 to 8:00 pm\n\n\nAward-winning indie author Julie Mathison came to independent publishing after years of pursuing the traditional dream\, securing a top agent\, making the rounds to the “Big Five” of New York publishing houses ~ and ultimately relinquishing that dream for the path less traveled. In an age that increasingly celebrates minority voices\, she has become passionate about the kind of diversity pioneered by small\, micro\, and author presses\, one based on artistic identity ~ a diversity of content\, voice\, and sensibility. This talk will be an exploration of lessons learned from the journey through both worlds. It will examine the pros and cons of the traditional and indie publishing paradigms and will probe how the marketplace shapes our shared literary canon. The author will invite questions\, anecdotes\, and participation from the audience\, writers and readers alike.

The rulers…are unmasking themselves.” – Daniel Ortega\, 30 April 2024 \nOn 19 July\, as Nicaragua celebrates the 45th anniversary of the Sandinista Revolution\, a reconfiguration of global power is playing out as rage escalates internationally at the genocide being committed in Gaza with arms and political support from the US\, UK\, EU and other allies. \nIn this emerging multipolar world\, voices of the South are being raised as one against US efforts to dominate and force other countries to follow its will. \nProgressive governments across Latin America and Africa are united in their condemnation of US efforts to flout international law and to impose illegal coercive measures (sanctions) on countries who fail to submit to their control. \nThis meeting will celebrate Nicaragua’s achievements and look at the country’s support for Palestine in the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Sanderson\, Taylor Stewart\, founder of the Oregon Remembrance Project\, and host Tara Houston\, Community and Engagement Manager\, Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF). \nSara Sanderson\, author of The Place We Make: Breaking the Legacy of Legalized Hate\, will share her own story of discovering that her ancestors participated in exiling Jacob Vanderpool from Oregon City in 1851 under the exclusion laws that prevented Black people from residing in Oregon. Fahed Abuakel for an online discussion about peace making in Palestine amid the Israeli assault on the Gaza strip. \nOne of the most prominent Palestinian Christian leaders in the world\, Rev. Fahed Abuakel was born in Kafr Yasif\, in the Galilee. He was ordained minister of the Presbyterian Church – USA in 1978 and in 2002 became the first Arab-American to lead a major U.S. denomination. \nHe has a BA from Southeastern University\, a Master of Divinity from Columbia Theological Seminary\, and a Doctor of Divinity from the McCormick Theological Seminary. He has served the Presbyterian Church in numerous executive capacities including: Moderator of its 214th General Assembly\, General Assembly Commissioner\, board member of the National Middle Eastern Ministries Committee\, and member of the Outreach\, Christian Education\, and Peacemaking Committees of the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta. Rev. Abuakel was instrumental in mission trips to Kenya\, Haiti\, Brazil\, Egypt\, Israel and Palestine. \nFOR-USA is proud and honored to work with Rev. DESCRIPTION:Besides serving as the state animal\, and the OSU emblem\, Beavers are incredibly valuable components of our natural and managed ecosystems. This is becoming especially evident as climate change compromises water supplies across the landscape. Unfortunately\, beavers can also become a menace for some forest and agricultural operations. As a result\, they have become the subject of meaningful legislation over the last two sessions in Salem\, firstly to provide them some protection and secondly to help landowners learn how to coexist with them. \nDuring SOCCAN’s March open public meeting on Tuesday March 26th\, Jakob Shockey\, founder and Executive Director of Project Beaver will deliver a presentation on Beaver during which he will offer an introduction to the beavers\, followed by a discussion of how they build habitat resilience and water security in the face of climate change. Jakob will round out with a discussion of the challenges they face and ways folks can help. \nThe program is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, February 17 @ 3:00pm in the Great Hall RVUUF will host a potluck and storytelling afternoon with David West\, (Enrolled: Citizen Potawatomi Nation) and Director Emeritus of SOU’s Native American Studies Program.  After inviting everyone to share in a water and food blessing\, David will share stories with a focus on water and seven generations planning.  This is a wonderful opportunity to experience traditional oral storytelling from one who was raised and trained in this tradition. \nAs David says\, “Come and listen because in that storytelling there may be one word\, one sentence\, one story that was meant just for you.  And it might answer a question of need that you hadn’t even asked.  That’s the wisdom of this storytelling time.”  Bring your favorite potluck dish (hot or cold) to share.  Also\, please bring your own table setting\, mug and silverware. \nRVUUF will provide paper napkins\, coffee\, tea\, and water.

Author Rivera Sun and youth facilitator Savanna Holden are co-facilitating a special intergenerational book club on The Crown of Light. \nThe novel is a part of the award-winning Ari Ara Series and tells the story of a nonviolent Peace Force that halts violence and stops war in the border region between two feuding nations. Note: You do not need to have read the other books in the series. This story stands alone. \nReaders age 11 and up will enjoy this book group. This story features a 14-year-old heroine and an intergenerational group of friends. \nWith readers of all ages\, this book group will have engaging conversations about the scenes of waging peace\, the characters’ commitment to nonviolence\, and the challenges they surmount. DESCRIPTION:The Sunrise Project aims to help former sundown towns reconcile their history of racial exclusion by creating new identities as that of “sunrise communities\,” the opposite of sundown towns. After starting in Grants Pass\, the Oregon Remembrance Project is now working with community members in Ashland to bring this vision of belonging for all to our community.
