A new generation of musicians with an old fella thrown in for good measure. \nPeg Tooth Bow Saw organize monthly community dance events featuring live tunes played by various local musicians and called dances. Beginners are welcome\, no partner necessary. Featuring circles\, squares\, contras\, waltz’s\,etc. \nSilent auction and raffle will be ongoing throughout the evening\, featuring quality items and services. Come connect with community\, build solidarity\, share some food and drink and lift your spirits with joyful music and dance\, all in support of the people of Gaza and a Free Palestine. \nThis event is cosponsored by Jewish Voice for Peace-Rogue Valley. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, February 17 @ 3:00pm in the Great Hall RVUUF will host a potluck and storytelling afternoon with David West\, (Enrolled: Citizen Potawatomi Nation) and Director Emeritus of SOU’s Native American Studies Program.  After inviting everyone to share in a water and food blessing\, David will share stories with a focus on water and seven generations planning.  This is a wonderful opportunity to experience traditional oral storytelling from one who was raised and trained in this tradition. \nAs David says\, “Come and listen because in that storytelling there may be one word\, one sentence\, one story that was meant just for you.  And it might answer a question of need that you hadn’t even asked.  That’s the wisdom of this storytelling time.”  Bring your favorite potluck dish (hot or cold) to share.  Also\, please bring your own table setting\, mug and silverware. \nRVUUF will provide paper napkins\, coffee\, tea\, and water.

After starting in Grants Pass\, the Oregon Remembrance Project is now working with community members in Ashland to bring this vision of belonging for all to our community. There is a $150 fee to take the training without becoming a volunteer. \nThe training covers strength-based communication\, trauma-informed care\, youth development\, active listening\, and avoiding bias; it also gives scenarios in small groups to practice the skills learned. \nWe are always receiving new applications from youth hoping for mentors.  We serve any youth in Jackson County between the ages of 9 and 24 years; most of our mentees are in middle- or high- school. He co-founded Soil Life Services\, which supports producers in\nmonitoring and evaluating the impacts of agricultural management on soil carbon and other metrics of\nsoil health. He was also the Board Treasurer for the Josephine Porter Institute (2019-22). Since 2021\, he\nhas served as the Director of Agriculture at Troon Vineyard\, Oregon’s only Biodynamic and Regenerative\nOrganic Certified farm. \nHe is passionate about real\, good food\, preaching the value of soil\, and the interconnectedness of all\nlife. DESCRIPTION:A member of Physicians for Social Responsibility’s Committee for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons\, Peter Lumsdaine will lead us in an in-person briefing and discussion of his unique 2023 visit to Ukraine & Poland with a group seeking answers to questions like: \nWhere is the conflict going?   \nWill it lead to global nuclear war?   \nPeter Lumsdaine is a long-term public-interest educator and organizer\, having worked under UC Davis and US Department of Energy grant projects and on the program staff of NGOs such as Global Exchange and the Resource Center for Nonviolence.  His work has taken him to armed resource-conflict zones in occupied Iraq\, Mexico\, and the Philippines –  as well as to Jordan\, Israel\, Guatemala\, Korea\, Hiroshima and Nagasaki.  Over the years he has been an invited speaker for more than 100 campus\, church\, community\, and conference audiences across the US and beyond. \nShortly before the Ukrainian government’s military summer counteroffensive began\, he traveled in Ukraine and Poland with a delegation of the Zaporizhzhia Protection Project (ZPP)\, which seeks to avert a military disaster at the nuclear power plant of that name  –   though his report will also cover the broader situation in Ukraine\, the war’s technological escalation\, and its rapidly accelerating global implications. \nIn Ukraine he and three other delegation members travelled to Kyiv\, Dnipro\, Zaporizhzhia\, the countryside in between\, and then through backroads army checkpoints to the mining town of Marhanets\, near the Ukrainian military’s off-limits “red zone” and the Russian lines\, across the river from the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.\nLumsdaine and other delegation members interviewed Ukrainian townspeople and refugees\, miners and factory workers\, journalists and teachers\, church and community leaders\, former Russian citizens\, government officials\, soldiers\, and Ukrainian anti-war dissenters involved in their country’s semi-underground peace movement. \nContact Peter at tierralinda@gmail.com

There can be no justification for their actions. Neither is there justification for Israel’s relentless and indiscriminate bombing of 2 million Palestinians. We call for an immediate  cessation of hostilities\, the release of all hostages\, and the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza. \nIn the midst of this situation\, we are showing a film at the VarsityTheatre that challenges the equation that loving Judaism means unquestioning support of Israeli foreign policy. It questions the proposition that criticizing Israel is somehow anti-Semitic. It is precisely because we love both Judaism and Israel that we feel it is so important to challenge the policies of both Israel and the United States that have brought us to this tragic moment. \nThe film ‘ISRAELISM’ will be shown at the Varsity Theatre October 27th at 4:00 p.m. \nTen years in the making\, this award winning documentary follows two young American Jews with strong emotional attachments to Israel and how their attitudes and beliefs begin to transform as they spend time In Israel and Palestine. DESCRIPTION:The community is invited to the Historic Ashland Armory this Sunday\, September 17 for the “Aloha Maui Benefit Concert” to support Lahaina wildfire victims. \nEntry fees range from $20 to $100 depending on how much you want to donate and all profits will go directly to victims in Maui through United Way of Jackson County. \n“For a lot of people\, when they’re giving small amounts and helping\, what it does is give people a feeling that they’ve had something to do with the recovery\,” said Greg Frederick with The Rogue Suspects. “And I think especially with some of the disasters we’ve suffered here\, I think people feel like they’d like to give back.” \nSeveral of our favorite Southern Oregon music groups will be performing\, including The Rogue Suspects\, Alice Di Michele\, Petty Thievery\, HA’ENA and Fret Drifters. \nThis is an all-ages event with food provided by Gather and wine from Dos Mariposas Vineyard. \nDoors open at 5:30 pm for the silent auction and refreshments. DESCRIPTION:Anyone spending time in the dryer forests of Southern Oregon will have seen the splashes of orange among the healthy green backdrop. These splashes of color portend our future; they represent Douglas firs that are expiring. As the trees die\, the needles lose the healthy green chlorophyll that drives photosynthesis and produce the familiar orange splashes that increasingly dot the skyline of our hills.Extension Forester\, OSU (retired) Max Bennett has been studying this phenomenon for some years. \nBennett will provide an account of his findings and conclusions during the next Southern Oregon Climate Action Now monthly open public meeting. The program will occur on Tuesday August 29 th at 6:00 pm at the Medford Public Library. The presentation is free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:ASAP is pleased to announce a Benefit Concert for Sviatohirsk’s will take place on Saturday\, August 19\, 2 p.m. at the Ashland High School Theatre on 201 S Mountain Ave. The concert will feature: \n\nThe Southern Oregon Repertory Singers with Paul French\, Conductor – The Southern Oregon Repertory Singers celebrate 34 years of providing the highest quality choral music to the Rogue Valley. Their 60+voice ensemble is comprised of volunteer and paid\, semi-professional singers\, many of whom are professional performers and/or music educators. The relationship will support humanitarian aid and fundraising efforts within the Ashland community. The approved partnership authorized Mayor Tonya Graham to sign a Memorandum of Understanding that memorializes the relationship between Sviatohirs’k and Ashland and offers support amidst unimaginable suffering and dire conditions faced by our brothers and sisters of Ukraine. \nThe new sister city relationship will involve various reciprocal activities in education\, the arts and business\, such as exchange programs\, scholarships\, cultural events\, language training programs and potential business partnerships – Much like the relationship the City of Ashland has shared with their other sister city\, Guanajuato\, for over 50 years. However\, due to the devastation of Sviatohirs’k by Russian occupation in 2022\, the immediate goal will be to aid the new sister city. The Ashland–Sviatohirs’k Aid Project (ASAP) will be vital in this effort. \n“The city was 70% destroyed by the Russians\,” stated Ben Stott\, who has been leading the effort to form the new sister city relationship. “They were occupied for four months. When they (Russians) left\, they stole pretty much everything. They cleaned out the hospital. They just wiped out everything and stole it\, and so what we’re hoping to do through fundraising and public awareness is to help them rebuild the civic infrastructure so that they can get a working government again so people will start to move back to the city\,” Stott said. Graham added that she spoke with the Mayor of Sviatohirsk’s about the destruction of many parts of the Ukrainian city\, but the Ukrainian Mayor emphasized there is hope in the future of reciprocating the relationship with Ashland. But right now\, resources are needed.

DESCRIPTION:Please join the #nowaytotreatachild campaign co-leaders from Defense for Children International – Palestine and American Friends Service Committee for a webinar on July 25 at 12 p.m. Eastern / 9 a.m. Pacific / 5 p.m. BST.  \nPalestinian rights organizers\, activists\, and advocates across the United States have been busy working to advance the Palestinian Children and Families Act\, H.R. 3103\, which aims to prohibit Israel from using U.S. taxpayer funds to detain and torture Palestinian children\, demolish or seize Palestinian homes and property\, and further annex the occupied West Bank. During this webinar\, several special guests will share their experiences advocating for Palestinian rights in the U.S. and share tips for how you can make progress with your elected officials. \nBackground \nApproximately 2.9 million Palestinians live in the occupied West Bank\, of which around 45 percent are children under the age of 18. \nPalestinian children in the West Bank\, like adults\, face arrest\, prosecution\, and imprisonment under an Israeli military detention system that denies them basic rights. \nSince 1967\, Israel has operated two separate legal systems in the same territory. In the occupied West Bank\, Israeli settlers are subject to the civilian and criminal legal system whereas Palestinians live under military law. \nIsrael applies civilian criminal law to Palestinian children in East Jerusalem. No Israeli child comes into contact with the military courts. \nIsrael has the dubious distinction of being the only country in the world that automatically and systematically prosecutes children in military courts that lack fundamental fair trial rights and protections. Israel prosecutes between 500 and 700 Palestinian children in military courts each year. \nIll-treatment in the Israeli military detention system remains “widespread\, systematic\, and institutionalized throughout the process\,” according to the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) report Children in Israeli Military Detention Observations and Recommendations. \nChildren typically arrive to interrogation bound\, blindfolded\, frightened\, and sleep deprived. \nChildren often give confessions after verbal abuse\, threats\, physical and psychological violence that in some cases amounts to torture. \nIsraeli military law provides no right to legal counsel during interrogation\, and Israeli military court judges seldom exclude confessions obtained by coercion or torture. \nABOUT #NOWAYTOTREATACHILD’S WEBINARS AND ZOOM:\nFor this webinar\, we will be using the Zoom platform.
