DESCRIPTION:On Monday January 15\, join community members for Southern Oregon’s Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.\, Holiday Celebration from noon to 1:30 p.m.\, at the Historic Ashland Armory in downtown Ashland. The event is free and open to the public. \nCome celebrate Dr. King’s legacy and our diverse and vibrant community. Seating is limited and available on a first come basis. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. This is a family event and all ages are welcome. Admission is free\, but donations are welcome. We encourage everyone to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to the SOU Food Pantry. The event is sign-language interpreted. \nFor those who cannot attend\, the event will be live-streamed here on somlk.org and on RVTV’s YouTube channel. \nThis year\, the celebration’s theme is “We Choose Love! Now more than ever\, the DREAM must continue.” \nThis year’s Keynote speech will be delivered by historian\, educator\, and longtime host\, D.L. Richardson. \nThe celebration will include messages from faith leaders in the valley\, and performances by the Ashland School District Middle School Choir\, the Rogue Valley Peace Choir\, BASE Youth Dancers\, spoken word from area students\, and The Friends of Bishop Mayfield Band who will perform a tribute to the beloved local blues legend. There will also be a slideshow presentation on the need for the Civil Rights Movement\, as we celebrate the landmark 1964 Civil Rights Act\, sixty years later \nFinally\, in keeping with a long-time tradition\, we will march from the Armory to the downtown Plaza to hear Dr. King’s original\, “I have a Dream\,” speech\, where the Kirby Shaw Singers will perform.

Garett Long\, Agriculture Director will join us to explain what Demeter Biodynamic and Regenerative Agriculture are\, how they do it\, and how it benefits us all – plus how they hope to achieve the goal of having a much broader impact than just one vineyard. \nMore Information \nTroon Vineyard “farms like the world depends on it.” In addition to providing excellent Rogue Valley\nwines\, Troon Vineyard and Farm on Kubli Road\, Grants Pass\, is certified as practicing Demeter\nBiodynamic and Regenerative Agriculture. This is undertaken with the goal of lightening their footprint\nand maintaining a sustainable operation. \nAs they state on their website: “The recent certification follows a conversion to biodynamic farming that\nhas revitalized the estate’s soils while also providing a template for other wineries both locally and\naround the world to reduce their environmental footprint.” \nThe next SOCAN General meeting will be Tuesday November 28th at the Medford Public Library from 6:00 – 7:30. He spent five formative years practicing biodynamic and regenerative farming at Apricot Lane\nFarms (see The Biggest Little Farm documentary) and earned his M.S. in Soils & Biogeochemistry from\nthe University of California-Davis. He co-founded Soil Life Services\, which supports producers in\nmonitoring and evaluating the impacts of agricultural management on soil carbon and other metrics of\nsoil health. He was also the Board Treasurer for the Josephine Porter Institute (2019-22). Since 2021\, he\nhas served as the Director of Agriculture at Troon Vineyard\, Oregon’s only Biodynamic and Regenerative\nOrganic Certified farm. \nHe is passionate about real\, good food\, preaching the value of soil\, and the interconnectedness of all\nlife. He has lectured on soil health\, composting and regenerative farming for individuals and brands.\nGarett has engaged the movement at the intersection of agriculture and ecosystem management\,\nworking with people in resolute action to conserve what we have\, and restore what we have lost. \nThere is no charge for attending the meeting. \nSOCAN invites you to join them and learn what Troon is doing.

SUMMARY:Ukraine Eyewitness: Report from the Front – On the Threat of Nuclear Disaster
DESCRIPTION:A member of Physicians for Social Responsibility’s Committee for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons\, Peter Lumsdaine will lead us in an in-person briefing and discussion of his unique 2023 visit to Ukraine & Poland with a group seeking answers to questions like: \nWhere is the conflict going?   \nWill it lead to global nuclear war?   \nPeter Lumsdaine is a long-term public-interest educator and organizer\, having worked under UC Davis and US Department of Energy grant projects and on the program staff of NGOs such as Global Exchange and the Resource Center for Nonviolence.  His work has taken him to armed resource-conflict zones in occupied Iraq\, Mexico\, and the Philippines –  as well as to Jordan\, Israel\, Guatemala\, Korea\, Hiroshima and Nagasaki.  Over the years he has been an invited speaker for more than 100 campus\, church\, community\, and conference audiences across the US and beyond. \nShortly before the Ukrainian government’s military summer counteroffensive began\, he traveled in Ukraine and Poland with a delegation of the Zaporizhzhia Protection Project (ZPP)\, which seeks to avert a military disaster at the nuclear power plant of that name  –   though his report will also cover the broader situation in Ukraine\, the war’s technological escalation\, and its rapidly accelerating global implications. \nIn Ukraine he and three other delegation members travelled to Kyiv\, Dnipro\, Zaporizhzhia\, the countryside in between\, and then through backroads army checkpoints to the mining town of Marhanets\, near the Ukrainian military’s off-limits “red zone” and the Russian lines\, across the river from the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.\nLumsdaine and other delegation members interviewed Ukrainian townspeople and refugees\, miners and factory workers\, journalists and teachers\, church and community leaders\, former Russian citizens\, government officials\, soldiers\, and Ukrainian anti-war dissenters involved in their country’s semi-underground peace movement. \nContact Peter at tierralinda@gmail.com

DESCRIPTION:A coalition of Southern Oregon BDS Solidarity and Jewish Voice for Peace Rogue Valley is holding a demonstration this Saturday\, November 18\, from 3-6 PM on the Ashland Plaza. \nWe are demonstrating in solidarity with the people of Gaza as they face an onslaught of US/Israeli bombing and shelling. At least 39 journalists have been killed covering the story\, among the 10\,000+ civilians dead. \nAt least 80% of Gaza’s population are already displaced people\, as a result previous forced population transfer by Israeli forces. \nWe are calling for an immediate ceasefire and an end to US funding for Israel.

DESCRIPTION:We at Jewish Voice for Peace are deeply saddened and horrified by the cruelty and disregard for human life shown by Hamas in their attack on Israel. There can be no justification for their actions. Neither is there justification for Israel’s relentless and indiscriminate bombing of 2 million Palestinians. We call for an immediate  cessation of hostilities\, the release of all hostages\, and the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza. \nIn the midst of this situation\, we are showing a film at the VarsityTheatre that challenges the equation that loving Judaism means unquestioning support of Israeli foreign policy. It questions the proposition that criticizing Israel is somehow anti-Semitic. It is precisely because we love both Judaism and Israel that we feel it is so important to challenge the policies of both Israel and the United States that have brought us to this tragic moment. \nThe film ‘ISRAELISM’ will be shown at the Varsity Theatre October 27th at 4:00 p.m. \nTen years in the making\, this award winning documentary follows two young American Jews with strong emotional attachments to Israel and how their attitudes and beliefs begin to transform as they spend time In Israel and Palestine. They witness the harsh conditions in the West Bank under Israeli occupation and begin to challenge Israel to follow the Jewish ethics and values they hold dear. \nFollowing the film\, there will be a Q&A with one of the filmmakers. DESCRIPTION:The community is invited to the Historic Ashland Armory this Sunday\, September 17 for the “Aloha Maui Benefit Concert” to support Lahaina wildfire victims. \nEntry fees range from $20 to $100 depending on how much you want to donate and all profits will go directly to victims in Maui through United Way of Jackson County. \n“For a lot of people\, when they’re giving small amounts and helping\, what it does is give people a feeling that they’ve had something to do with the recovery\,” said Greg Frederick with The Rogue Suspects. “And I think especially with some of the disasters we’ve suffered here\, I think people feel like they’d like to give back.” \nSeveral of our favorite Southern Oregon music groups will be performing\, including The Rogue Suspects\, Alice Di Michele\, Petty Thievery\, HA’ENA and Fret Drifters. \nThis is an all-ages event with food provided by Gather and wine from Dos Mariposas Vineyard. \nDoors open at 5:30 pm for the silent auction and refreshments. DESCRIPTION:Anyone spending time in the dryer forests of Southern Oregon will have seen the splashes of orange among the healthy green backdrop. These splashes of color portend our future; they represent Douglas firs that are expiring. As the trees die\, the needles lose the healthy green chlorophyll that drives photosynthesis and produce the familiar orange splashes that increasingly dot the skyline of our hills.Extension Forester\, OSU (retired) Max Bennett has been studying this phenomenon for some years. \nBennett will provide an account of his findings and conclusions during the next Southern Oregon Climate Action Now monthly open public meeting. The program will occur on Tuesday August 29 th at 6:00 pm at the Medford Public Library. The presentation is free and open to the public.

The Ashland–Sviatohirs’k Aid Project (ASAP) will be vital in this effort. \n“The city was 70% destroyed by the Russians\,” stated Ben Stott\, who has been leading the effort to form the new sister city relationship. “They were occupied for four months. When they (Russians) left\, they stole pretty much everything. They cleaned out the hospital. They just wiped out everything and stole it\, and so what we’re hoping to do through fundraising and public awareness is to help them rebuild the civic infrastructure so that they can get a working government again so people will start to move back to the city\,” Stott said. Graham added that she spoke with the Mayor of Sviatohirsk’s about the destruction of many parts of the Ukrainian city\, but the Ukrainian Mayor emphasized there is hope in the future of reciprocating the relationship with Ashland. But right now\, resources are needed.

DESCRIPTION:Please join the #nowaytotreatachild campaign co-leaders from Defense for Children International – Palestine and American Friends Service Committee for a webinar on July 25 at 12 p.m. Eastern / 9 a.m. Pacific / 5 p.m. BST.  \nPalestinian rights organizers\, activists\, and advocates across the United States have been busy working to advance the Palestinian Children and Families Act\, H.R. 3103\, which aims to prohibit Israel from using U.S. taxpayer funds to detain and torture Palestinian children\, demolish or seize Palestinian homes and property\, and further annex the occupied West Bank. During this webinar\, several special guests will share their experiences advocating for Palestinian rights in the U.S. and share tips for how you can make progress with your elected officials. \nBackground \nApproximately 2.9 million Palestinians live in the occupied West Bank\, of which around 45 percent are children under the age of 18. \nPalestinian children in the West Bank\, like adults\, face arrest\, prosecution\, and imprisonment under an Israeli military detention system that denies them basic rights. \nSince 1967\, Israel has operated two separate legal systems in the same territory. In the occupied West Bank\, Israeli settlers are subject to the civilian and criminal legal system whereas Palestinians live under military law. \nIsrael applies civilian criminal law to Palestinian children in East Jerusalem. No Israeli child comes into contact with the military courts. \nIsrael has the dubious distinction of being the only country in the world that automatically and systematically prosecutes children in military courts that lack fundamental fair trial rights and protections. Israel prosecutes between 500 and 700 Palestinian children in military courts each year. \nIll-treatment in the Israeli military detention system remains “widespread\, systematic\, and institutionalized throughout the process\,” according to the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) report Children in Israeli Military Detention Observations and Recommendations. \nChildren typically arrive to interrogation bound\, blindfolded\, frightened\, and sleep deprived. \nChildren often give confessions after verbal abuse\, threats\, physical and psychological violence that in some cases amounts to torture. \nIsraeli military law provides no right to legal counsel during interrogation\, and Israeli military court judges seldom exclude confessions obtained by coercion or torture. \nABOUT #NOWAYTOTREATACHILD’S WEBINARS AND ZOOM:\nFor this webinar\, we will be using the Zoom platform. SUMMARY:SOCAN Monthly Meeting: Curb Food Waste for the Climate
DESCRIPTION:Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN) will feature guest speakers and a discussion about what people can do to help curb food waste in Southern Oregon March 28 at 6:00 p.m. online. \nIn 2022\, the U.S. department of Agriculture stated: “Food loss and waste … exacerbates the climate crisis with its significant GHG footprint. Production\, transportation\, and handling of food generate significant carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions\, and when food ends up in landfills\, it generates methane\, [which is] an even more potent greenhouse gas.” \nA 2021 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency report concluded that “each year\, U.S. food loss and waste embodies 170 million metric tons of climate pollution– equal to the annual CO2 emissions of 42 coal-fired power plants.” This doesn’t even take landfill methane into account. \nTo learn more about food waste and what we can do to address it\, join Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN) at their March 28th General Meeting online from 6:00 to 7:00pm. This month’s topic is “Food Waste and the Climate Crisis: What to Know & What to Do” with featured speakers Flavia Franco of Southern Oregon Food Solutions\, Jeanette Hardison of the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition\, and Ellie Cosgrove of Rogue Valley Farm 2 School. \nThere is no charge for joining the ZOOM meeting\, but participants must register at the link on the SOCAN calendar event: socan.eco/food-waste. \nIn response to the food waste problem April 10 – 16 has been designated as ‘Food Waste Prevention Week’ nationwide. In order to raise awareness and to engage with folks about solutions. Oregon’s Department of Environmental Quality is a sponsor of this campaign.
