SUMMARY:From Local Action to Global Impact
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, Sept. 21 — From Local Action to Global Impact – Noon-1pm – Global ZoomMany of us grapple with the questions of what is ours to do and how do we make the biggest impact. We do so as we process the overwhelm and despair that emerges as we witness the unfolding climate chaos—wildfires\, hurricanes\, heat waves\, people forced to flee their homes due to disasters\, and so much more. \nThose feelings live alongside the knowledge that urgent action is needed and a soup of paralysis\, anxiety\, and dread can ensue. Join the Pachamama Alliance global community to explore the journey from concern\, dread\, and paralysis to impactful action. We’ll explore the connection between global issues and local solutions and share some examples of individuals who are on a journey to discover their role to play in the unfolding climate crisis. \nThis call is part of Resilience and Possibility in These Times\, a series of online offerings to support us all in staying connected to one another during these challenging times. \nRegister Here: https://landing.pachamama.org/call-48-impact

SUMMARY:SOCAN: What’s Happening to our Douglas firs?
DESCRIPTION:Anyone spending time in the dryer forests of Southern Oregon will have seen the splashes of orange among the healthy green backdrop. These splashes of color portend our future; they represent Douglas firs that are expiring. As the trees die\, the needles lose the healthy green chlorophyll that drives photosynthesis and produce the familiar orange splashes that increasingly dot the skyline of our hills.Extension Forester\, OSU (retired) Max Bennett has been studying this phenomenon for some years. \nBennett will provide an account of his findings and conclusions during the next Southern Oregon Climate Action Now monthly open public meeting. The program will occur on Tuesday August 29 th at 6:00 pm at the Medford Public Library. The presentation is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:SOCAN Monthly Meeting: Curb Food Waste for the Climate
DESCRIPTION:Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN) will feature guest speakers and a discussion about what people can do to help curb food waste in Southern Oregon March 28 at 6:00 p.m. online. \nIn 2022\, the U.S. department of Agriculture stated: “Food loss and waste … exacerbates the climate crisis with its significant GHG footprint. Production\, transportation\, and handling of food generate significant carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions\, and when food ends up in landfills\, it generates methane\, [which is] an even more potent greenhouse gas.” \nA 2021 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency report concluded that “each year\, U.S. food loss and waste embodies 170 million metric tons of climate pollution– equal to the annual CO2 emissions of 42 coal-fired power plants.” This doesn’t even take landfill methane into account. \nTo learn more about food waste and what we can do to address it\, join Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN) at their March 28th General Meeting online from 6:00 to 7:00pm. This month’s topic is “Food Waste and the Climate Crisis: What to Know & What to Do” with featured speakers Flavia Franco of Southern Oregon Food Solutions\, Jeanette Hardison of the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition\, and Ellie Cosgrove of Rogue Valley Farm 2 School. \nThere is no charge for joining the ZOOM meeting\, but participants must register at the link on the SOCAN calendar event: socan.eco/food-waste. \nIn response to the food waste problem April 10 – 16 has been designated as ‘Food Waste Prevention Week’ nationwide. In order to raise awareness and to engage with folks about solutions. Oregon’s Department of Environmental Quality is a sponsor of this campaign.

SUMMARY:Protect Peehee Mu'huh: Resisting Dirty Mining for “Clean Energy”
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to this free event with People of Red Mountain! \nAs demand for electric cars and renewable energy increases\, so has the pressure from governments and corporations to exploit Indigenous lands and waterways for lithium– a critical component in producing new batteries. \nA coalition of Indigenous groups\, tribes\, and environmental organizations are fighting to protect Thacker Pass from the largest proposed open pit lithium mine in the U.S.\, on Paiute-Shoshone land in northern Nevada. Exploratory drilling for lithium is also underway at other sites in Nevada and just over the state line in southeast Oregon. \nThis panel will show that the ongoing degradation of land\, water\, and Indigenous sovereignty is a false solution to our climate crisis. Presented by People of Red Mountain and moderated by Ka’ila Farrell-Smith. \nThis event is being offered freely to the community as part of SOU’s upcoming Climate Justice Conference. SUMMARY:Climate Justice Conference
DESCRIPTION:Be Part of the Change: February 24-25\, 2023 \nFrom SOU’s Sustainability Center \nThe goal of the conference is to accelerate the pace with which a racial equity lens is integrated into regional climate change mitigation\, adaptation\, and resilience efforts. Centering of BIPOC experiences and adopting a racial equity lens for planning and decision making is urgently needed. By convening individuals and organizations from racial justice and social equity arenas with those working toward climate change resilience\, this conference hopes to build a more equitable future where BIPOC and historically marginalized communities are less disproportionately impacted by a changing climate. \nThis two-day conference will feature case study presentations\, panel discussions\, workshops\, and keynote speakers from Southern Oregon and beyond\, around these three themes: \n\nClimate justice activism\, action\, and learning\nAdopting a racial equity lens – for individuals\, for groups\, and for action\nLearning lessons about equity and resilience from the 2020 fires\n\nThis conference is open to anyone interested in learning about climate and social justice! Attendees are expected to be a mixture of interested community members\, high school and college students\, teachers\, and faculty from the region\, and employees and volunteers with government agencies\, businesses\, and community organizations. \nRegistration

SUMMARY:Film Screening: The Revolution Generation
DESCRIPTION:Stopping the emissions and then reversing the effects of excess greenhouse gasses is the existential crisis of our times. Massive\, transformative action is needed and must happen by the end of the decade. The Millennial Generation has grown up with the technology\, social tools\, and cooperative training to lead this fundamental change. The Revolution Generation is a kinetic\, perceptive documentary of a generation that examines why they are who they are. \nThis film is for all generations. It explores the “80-year cycle” of human history and shows the unique roll that Millennials will play as they shape the society for the rest of the century as we deal with a changing climate change\, social injustices\, geopolitical struggles\, and rapidly changing technology. \nNarrated by Michelle Rodriguez. Featuring interviews with Neil Howe\, Cici Battle\, Renaldo Pearson\, Roza Calderon\, David Burstein\, Christine Hassler\, Adam Smiley Poswalsky\, Ana Kasparian\, Tamara Draught\, Alexi Panos\, Tulsi Gabbard \nThe number of Millennials in the United States — those born between approximately 1978 and 2000 — is near 80 million people. They’re the most diverse generation in America\, with 56 percent of them registered as politically Independent … and every single one of them will be needed if the planet is to avoid climate catastrophe. In THE REVOLUTION GENERATION\, filmmakers Josh Tickell and Rebecca Tickell (whose previous films Fuel\, Pump\, and Kiss the Ground have examined oil\, capitalism\, and a regenerative way forward for the earth) spotlight a generation that has been mischaracterized\, mislabeled\, and mistakenly mocked. Through interviews and highlighting a theory by authors/generational demographists Neil Howe and William Strauss that history can be viewed as a series of 80-year cycles — and within that\, into four “seasons” that bring with them profound societal changes — the film shows the impact of the WWII Generation\, Baby Boomers\, and Gen X. But Millennials occupy a special spot: They’re creators of social tech and native digital users\, are anti-corporate crusaders\, are more empathetic that any previous group … and they now have to secure voting rights\, equality\, and the safety of the planet itself. Can they do it? A kinetic\, perceptive documentary of a generation and why they are who they are\, THE REVOLUTION GENERATION is also\, as Josh Trickell says\, “A how-to manual for saving the earth.” \nPlease join us for a screening and subsequent discussion on Wednesday\, April 27 at 6:00 PM PDT. \nRegistration required: bit.ly/SOCAN-Rev-Gen
