SUMMARY:How to Build a Bridge: The Road to Reconciliation
DESCRIPTION:Are the growing divides in our world starting to feel overwhelming? The first step\, and one that each one of us can do\, is to “depolarize within.” \nWe need to look for the walls of separation and hostility inside ourselves and learn how we can start dissolving them. With that as a starting point\, we become bearers of reconciliation in our own homes\, within our existing family structures\, in our workplaces\, and beyond. Come find out some ways\, as individuals\, we can get there. \nThis FREE presentation starts at 11:30 (Feel free to attend the service on Reconciliation at 10\, or for snacks at 11:15) \nPresenter: Marla Estes\, Founder\, Building Bridgers\, working to bridge the political divide since 2017 \nGet more information.

SUMMARY:Working toward Electrification of Medford
DESCRIPTION:An Oregon Environmental Council (OEC) representative will speak at the Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN) general meeting this month. OEC’s Max Light-Pacheco will preview OEC’s effort to stimulate electrification and energy efficiency in Medford – a project being undertaken in collaboration with SOCAN’s Medford Climate Action Team (MCAT). \nOEC was established in 1968 by concerned Oregonians across the state to protect the water\, air\, and land we all share and love. OEC has a statewide focus and had long served as a leading organization in efforts to stimulate climate action in the Oregon legislature and among Oregon state agencies. SOCAN has collaborated extensively over the years with OEC on climate action and their work in Southern Oregon. \nYour voice\, your attention\, and your continued presence matter. Together\, we’re building a more informed and resilient Oregon.

SUMMARY:Music & Song: ‘Be a Light’ for Peace\, Justice\, the Earth
DESCRIPTION:The Rogue Valley Peace Choir — now celebrating its 22nd year — is presenting a concert entitled Be a Light. The choir — directed by Rob Griswell-Lowry and accompanied by Mikiko Petrucelli — is a community\, secular choir dedicated to building peace\, equality\, social justice\, and stewardship of our planet through song. The concert’s Be a Light theme is inspired by one of the songs in the choir’s repertoire that encourages people not to “hide in the dark\,” but to be a light in a world full of hate\, to be peace in a time full of war\, and to make a difference where change is needed. Other songs in the repertoire express the choir’s passion for recognizing the connection to everyone in our community and beyond; for supporting social justice\, diversity and self acceptance; and for treading lightly on our Mother Earth. While the concerts are free\, donations of any amount are welcome\, with a suggested donation of $15 for adults; no one will be turned away. Donations support the choir’s ability to perform for free at schools\, senior homes\, and community events throughout the year. See more about the choir and its staff.

SUMMARY:How do you reconcile a lynching? A story of justice and redemption.
DESCRIPTION:This event will focus on the legacy of Alonzo Tucker\, Oregon’s most widely documented African American victim of lynching\, and how his memory has inspired a movement for historical reconciliation. Taylor Stewart will share about how the search for an answer to this question transformed his life and taught him the potential to find true justice for Oregon’s history of racial injustice. \n“This story is not just about reconciliation; it’s about finding a way to heal and foster hope in our communities\,” Stewart explains. “By confronting these painful narratives\, we can begin to foster understanding and pave the way for a more just future.” \nGabrielle Johnsen\, founder of Grants Pass Remembrance (from Sundown to Sunrise) and Community Engagement Director of ORP\, will join the discussion. A Q&A session will follow. \nPlease register for the event.

SUMMARY:SOCAN Tracking More Than 70 Legislative Bills
DESCRIPTION:Attend SOCAN’s Salem Legislative Advocacy 2025 event to learn what’s unfolded over the past three months\, hear highlight on key wins and ongoing challenges\, and ask questions and join in a community dialogue. \nSOCAN’s Federal and State Project Team continues to play a pivotal role during Oregon’s legislative sessions. As this team navigates the 2025 Legislative Session\, it is currently tracking more than 70 bills addressing greenhouse gas reduction\, climate adaptation\, and individual action. Of particular concern are several proposals aimed at reversing Oregon’s 1980 ballot measure\, which prohibits the development of nuclear energy facilities without a verified\, safe method of waste disposal. \nWith the invaluable support of eight dedicated volunteers\, SOCAN submitted more than 120 public comments this session. Collective efforts have already made a difference — several harmful bills failed to move forward after the March 21 deadline. \n

SUMMARY:Digital Security is Community Care: Secure Messaging 101
DESCRIPTION:How do you securely talk to friends\, family\, or neighbors\, while limiting the chances that your messages will be seen and used by a government with extensive surveillance tools at its disposal? Come learn about Signal\, the go-to tool for those who just like privacy in their personal affairs as well as journalists\, activists\, and dissidents around the globe.\n\nThis workshop will be geared towards those who are brand-new to Signal and secure messaging\, and is a welcoming space for anyone who identifies as tech-challenged. We’ll talk about why secure messaging is important\, and why you might want to consider it for your daily communications in addition to organizing work. Bring your portable devices (like your phone and laptop) and we’ll help you install and begin to use Signal.\n\nAnd if you’ve been hearing about Signal in the news recently\, don’t worry: we’ll cover how to stay away from the Secretary of Defense’s easily avoidable mistakes.\n\nSpace is limited. Please register in advance.\n\nAbout the trainer: Meg Wade is a writer and organizer based in Southern Oregon with a long history of pro-democracy organizing. You can follow them on BlueSky or find them on Substack.
