SUMMARY:Digital Security is Community Care: Secure Messaging 101
DESCRIPTION:How do you securely talk to friends\, family\, or neighbors\, while limiting the chances that your messages will be seen and used by a government with extensive surveillance tools at its disposal? Come learn about Signal\, the go-to tool for those who just like privacy in their personal affairs as well as journalists\, activists\, and dissidents around the globe.\n\nThis workshop will be geared towards those who are brand-new to Signal and secure messaging\, and is a welcoming space for anyone who identifies as tech-challenged. We’ll talk about why secure messaging is important\, and why you might want to consider it for your daily communications in addition to organizing work. Bring your portable devices (like your phone and laptop) and we’ll help you install and begin to use Signal.\n\nAnd if you’ve been hearing about Signal in the news recently\, don’t worry: we’ll cover how to stay away from the Secretary of Defense’s easily avoidable mistakes.\n\nSpace is limited. Please register in advance.\n\nAbout the trainer: Meg Wade is a writer and organizer based in Southern Oregon with a long history of pro-democracy organizing. You can follow them on BlueSky or find them on Substack.

SUMMARY:HandsOff Rally in Medford\, National Day of Action
DESCRIPTION:HandsOff2025 has been asking for a national day of action and it’s finally here. This day\, in every city and town across the country\, millions of activists from a coalition of progressive groups across the country will rally\, march and stand up to the Trump agenda. The theme for the day is “Hands Off!” A core principle behind Hands Off! is a commitment to nonviolent action. Join others at this Southern Oregon gathering on the sidewalks that run along E. Jackson St.  View Map \nAt Noon\, Switch Places! \nIf you want\, you can march from Hawthorne Park to the second rally at Vogel Plaza downtown. It’s about a half-mile or a 15-minute walk. SUMMARY:Gather to Honor the Earth\, Rebalance Ourselves
DESCRIPTION:Southern Oregon Pachamama Alliance (SOPA) is hosting a Spring Equinox Ceremony near the upper duck pond at Lithia Park in Ashland. Parking is available off Winburn Way\, just north of the Granite Street intersection. Everyone is invited. \nThe spring equinox always arrives when we seem most ready to welcome the transition of seasons. At this time of the year\, day and night are in balance\, a perfect time to seek balance in our internal lives as well. In light of all the turmoil we are experiencing currently\, it is a perfect time to pause for a moment or two to be with ourselves and friends while tapping into the greatest source of all – what some call\, the Pachamama. For a short time\, at least\, nothing is required of us\, we can throw away\, or hide\, the “to do” list. We can just show up and be in the flow of ceremony. \nSOPA has hosted simple Solstice and Equinox celebrations\, facilitated by Louise Paré\, since the winter of 2012. The celebrations are centered on gratitude while gently reflecting on themes related to the season\, recent events or the state of our world at this time. Attendees are invited to speak from their hearts or to simply be in silence in community with others.

SUMMARY:Be Gun Smart… Whether or Not You Own a Firearm
DESCRIPTION:The program opens discussions around gun laws\, gun disposal and gun safety. Speakers will be Ashland Police Chief Tighe O’Meara and Jackson County Sheriff Nate Sickler. In November 2022\, Oregon voters narrowly passed Measure 114\, a groundbreaking gun control law that has never taken effect. Mired in series of court challenges\, it may be years before the law’s fate is settled. But there is plenty to talk about before the litigation runs its course. Part of the “Big Ideas” program series\, it is presented by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Ashland Branch and Jackson County Library Services.

SUMMARY:Redefining Sustainability for a Turbulent 21st Century
DESCRIPTION:John Giordanengo\, author of “Ecosystems as Models for Restoring Our Economies\,” is the featured speaker at Southern Oregon Climate Action Now’s February Monthly General Meeting. Drawing from three decades of experience and research in business\, economics\, ecology\, and conservation\, John H. Giordanengo explores the dynamic relationship between three governing components of highly complex systems — diversity\, energy\, and trade — to reveal a novel hypothesis on the structure of sustainable economies. The inspiration for his work is our economy’s sister system\, nature. Giordanengo offers a novel approach to achieving lasting conservation\, recognizing that humanity’s most serious concerns cannot be resolved by just environmental and social advocates. See more.

SUMMARY:Celebrate the Release of Leonard Peltier
DESCRIPTION:Join Leonard Peltier’s son\, Chauncey Peltier\, and for a community potluck\, singing\, drumming\, flute music\, and dancing to honor Leonard Peltier’s release from Federal imprisonment. Leonard Peltier\, an American Indian activist\, was imprisoned for nearly half a century after he was convicted for the 1975 killings of two FBI agents. President Joe Biden commuted Peltier’s sentence following decades of community-led advocacy calling his imprisonment an example of the U.S. government’s mistreatment of Native Americans. The commutation is not a pardon for crimes committed\, a decision some of Peltier’s advocates welcomed since he has always maintained his innocence. Peltier\, who is now 80 and of declining health\, will transition to home confinement. The celebration is sponsored by Southern Oregon Indian Center; Takelma Cultural Center; Multicultural Association of Southern Oregon; Table Rock Foundation; and Red Earth Descendants.

SUMMARY:Big Ideas: The Teenage Brain: Impacts on Despair\, Homelessness & Substance Abuse

Hear from Mary Ferrell\, Executive Director of the Maslow Project\, and Lacey Corbett\, MA\, Clinical Supervisor of the Maslow Project for insights into how teens navigate those types of challenges. \nMary Ferrell is the founder and Executive Director of Maslow Project\, www.maslowproject.com. Born and raised in Medford\, she graduated from Southern Oregon University and began working with homeless children and families through the Medford School District in 2000. Ferrell has initiated and developed programs including housing\, outreach initiatives\, and school-based programs that achieve an average of 92% on-time graduate rates year after year. She has served on numerous boards addressing housing\, children and family services\, and civil rights and is currently a Governor-appointed member of the Oregon Housing Stability Council. \nLacey Corbett\, MA\, LPC is a licensed therapist in Oregon. She obtained a Bachelor’s degree at Southern Oregon University and an Master’s from Naropa University in Boulder\, Colorado. Naropa is known for its outstanding Art Therapy program and contemplative-based (Buddhist inspired) education model.
