SUMMARY:KS Wild Open House: Betty LaDuke on Display
DESCRIPTION:KS Wild invites you to visit their new office at 562 A Street in Ashland\, Oregon for First Fridays in June and July\, featuring artist Betty LaDuke! \nA lifetime of travel and heartfelt respect for cultures and people around the world inspire the paintings and prints of renowned American artist Betty LaDuke. The vision for the rich colors and imagery of her work comes from dozens of trips to Asia\, Africa\, and Latin America where she has lived and worked among people whose lives differ dramatically from what LaDuke experienced as a child of immigrant parents in the Bronx\, New York. Her work celebrates cultural diversity\, equality\, and caring for the earth. \nLaDuke’s work marries art and humanitarianism to encourage learning about the root causes of hunger and poverty. Her art is a teaching tool that brings students closer to the realities of the world in which we live. \nLaDuke’s works are available for display in galleries\, university libraries\, and other venues where the message of peace\, hope\, and self-reliance for all might be heard.

SUMMARY:SoCAN Monthly Meeting: Climate Justice 101
DESCRIPTION:Southern Oregon Climate Action Now invites you to join their monthly meeting with the theme: Climate Justice 101. Presentation by Virginia Camberos\, Regional Director of Rogue Valley Unite Oregon and joined by Anahi Cervantes & Jose Antonio Bucio\, Unite Oregon Climate Justice Committee. Erika Bucio will translate for the Spanish-speaking panelists \nSince time immemorial\, vulnerable communities across the globe\, including in the United States\, have suffered disproportionately from the insults resulting from the environmental degradation that inconsiderate and irresponsible behaviors impose on society. It has become increasingly obvious that no proposal designed to address the climate crisis can be effective unless it also incorporates recognition and redress to the years of inequity that have existed. We cannot successfully remedy the climate crisis if our efforts maintain or heighten the social injustice that is already evident throughout our society. \nThe May SOCAN General Meeting will be dedicated to increasing our understanding of what climate justice means and the importance of incorporating climate justice into all we do. \nThere is no charge for joining the ZOOM meeting\, but registration is required. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:How War-mongering Now Includes a Nuclear War
DESCRIPTION:Code Pink invites you to attend a conversation with Col. Lawrence Wilderson May 25 at 5 p.m. on Zoom. \nThe war in Ukraine has brought a new level of war-mongering by the powerful\, not only echoed but amplified by the mainstream media. Notice how little we hear about negotiations and how repeatedly we are told that it is only more weapons that Ukraine needs. \nJoin us for a conversation with Col. Lawrence Wilkerson as he warns about war-mongering having gone nuclear: how the White House thinks it can win a nuclear war with Russia and how dangerous and disturbing this idea is. \nCol. Lawrence Wilkerson is an adjunct professor of government and public policy at the College of William and Mary and the former Chief of Staff to Secretary of State Colin Powell (2002 to 2005). He is a critic of U.S. foreign policy surrounding the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars\, Iran\, and the new Cold Wars with China and Russia\, and asserts that the U.S. is not a democracy but a war state that forces its will on the global community. In 2020\, Wilkerson worked on bipartisan projects to prepare for the possibility that a defeated Donald Trump would refuse to leave office. \nLearn More and Register Here

SUMMARY:Deconstructing Whiteness: Pioneers as Celebrated Figures
DESCRIPTION:For their April Zoom meeting\, Deconstructing Whiteness will focus on the topic Pioneers as Celebrated Figures: What are the Stories We Tell Ourselves? \nFrom Deconstructing Whiteness: \n“As we contemplate sayings such as “the last American frontier”\, “pioneers had it rough and persevered”\, “pioneers made something of this land\, they foraged\, and shaped it from nothing”\, “the founders of the U.S. were great men”\, “how the american west was won”\, “let’s play cowboys and indians”\, “last person on the totem pole”\, etc……let’s look at deconstructing these white colonists’ phrases. \nWhen we think about Euro-American settlers/colonizers and the way they have been romanticized for future generations\, we ponder this for at least two reasons: \n1) Why past and current white generations did and still continue this practice to this day\, and\n2) What keeps us believing in the white-centered\, brainwashed stories? \nWhat stories have we told ourselves\, as a people\, that live in us as “truth?” With some research\, we find they [stories as truth] are not based in fact. What in our white supremacy assumptions have we inherited from WAY back\, and live with us today? \nPrep Materials for April 2022: \n\nAndrew Jackson – (Through colonizer history)\nAmerican History Told Through Native Lens – NPR\nWe Shall Remain – There are 5 about 30-75min episodes – PBS – (These are not free unless you have a subscription through PBS or pay through Amazon prime)\nEssential Understandings of Native Americans in Oregon – Oregon Department of Education and the Nine Tribes of Oregon\n\nThese prep materials are optional\, but we encourage you to look at them with the intent of planting the seed of curiosity and self-education\, not as a “prerequisite” for attending. We start each of our sessions with a mutually created foundation. \nRSVP Here

SUMMARY:Film Screening: The Revolution Generation
DESCRIPTION:Stopping the emissions and then reversing the effects of excess greenhouse gasses is the existential crisis of our times. Massive\, transformative action is needed and must happen by the end of the decade. The Millennial Generation has grown up with the technology\, social tools\, and cooperative training to lead this fundamental change. The Revolution Generation is a kinetic\, perceptive documentary of a generation that examines why they are who they are. \nThis film is for all generations. It explores the “80-year cycle” of human history and shows the unique roll that Millennials will play as they shape the society for the rest of the century as we deal with a changing climate change\, social injustices\, geopolitical struggles\, and rapidly changing technology. \nNarrated by Michelle Rodriguez. Featuring interviews with Neil Howe\, Cici Battle\, Renaldo Pearson\, Roza Calderon\, David Burstein\, Christine Hassler\, Adam Smiley Poswalsky\, Ana Kasparian\, Tamara Draught\, Alexi Panos\, Tulsi Gabbard \nThe number of Millennials in the United States — those born between approximately 1978 and 2000 — is near 80 million people. They’re the most diverse generation in America\, with 56 percent of them registered as politically Independent … and every single one of them will be needed if the planet is to avoid climate catastrophe. In THE REVOLUTION GENERATION\, filmmakers Josh Tickell and Rebecca Tickell (whose previous films Fuel\, Pump\, and Kiss the Ground have examined oil\, capitalism\, and a regenerative way forward for the earth) spotlight a generation that has been mischaracterized\, mislabeled\, and mistakenly mocked. Through interviews and highlighting a theory by authors/generational demographists Neil Howe and William Strauss that history can be viewed as a series of 80-year cycles — and within that\, into four “seasons” that bring with them profound societal changes — the film shows the impact of the WWII Generation\, Baby Boomers\, and Gen X. But Millennials occupy a special spot: They’re creators of social tech and native digital users\, are anti-corporate crusaders\, are more empathetic that any previous group … and they now have to secure voting rights\, equality\, and the safety of the planet itself. Can they do it? A kinetic\, perceptive documentary of a generation and why they are who they are\, THE REVOLUTION GENERATION is also\, as Josh Trickell says\, “A how-to manual for saving the earth.” \nPlease join us for a screening and subsequent discussion on Wednesday\, April 27 at 6:00 PM PDT. \nRegistration required: bit.ly/SOCAN-Rev-Gen

SUMMARY:SOCAN: Funding Healthy Soils in Oregon
DESCRIPTION:All gardeners and farmers want healthy soil.  One of the best ways to achieve this is through practices that improve soil organic matter.  Regrettably\, we have been degrading our soils for too long and need to adjust our behavior. Fortunately\, doing so may lead to a win-win outcome: healthy soil and crops\, and we may reduce greenhouse gases from the atmosphere – leading to a healthier planet for all life. Because we all tend to be more comfortable doing what we currently do than making a change to unknown territory\, encouraging improved techniques is not always easy and requires incentives. \nThe catch is finding funds to incentivize this change in behavior.  Because of financial resources made available through the United States Department of Agriculture Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities opportunity\, there may be a solution.  Oregon’s Department of Agriculture (ODA) is developing an application for funds from this pool to support farmers who want to enhance their soil health and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. \nAt our next SOCAN Monthly General Meeting on April 26th\, Dr. Mike Badzmierowski\, Soil Health Specialist with ODA will explain the effort underway and discuss how it might work. There is no charge for joining the meeting which will run from 6:00 – 7:00 via ZOOM\, but participants must register.  Farmers interested in learning more should consider attending this program. \nPresentation by Mike Badzmierowski\, Ph.D.\, Oregon Department of Agriculture\, Soil Health Specialist \nRegistration Required: https://bit.ly/SOCAN-April
