SUMMARY:Betty LaDuke Art Show Fire\, Fury\, and Resistance
DESCRIPTION:From March 29 through May 20 Grants Pass Art Museum will host the Betty LaDuke Art Show Fire\, Fury\, and Resistance: Totem Witnesses and Turtle Wisdom. \nWe are about to be treated to an enormous show featuring the work of our dear friend Betty Betty LaDuke at the Grants Pass Museum of Art. Amazingly\, the thirty-eight pieces largely represent what she did while in virtual isolation during the past two years of COVID shutdown. \n“Fire\, Fury and Resilience” reflects her sensitivity to the s social issues of our times\, the Almeda Fire\, Immigration issues\, social distancing during COVID and long-standing issues of social justice are all brilliantly reflected in her textured three-dimensional pieces using strident purples and turquoise\, for instance\, in just the right places to create her own version of totems that are visually tribal and compelling. \nBetty’s work includes some pieces from a new series of twelve turtles that she was inspired to create after a recent trip to see her daughter\, Winona LaDuke\, in Minnesota. She described the way enormous turtles kept appearing along the highway they were driving on. In order not to hurt or scare the turtles\, Winona would get out and put a stick in front of them. They would snap at the stick and grip it\, not letting go. This made it possible for Winona to drag the turtles off the road as they appeared. Turtles have been iconic images for Betty over years the years as they appear in folk cultures in Africa\, South America\, Native American motifs over generations. \nBetty says that she is enjoying creating the turtle totems because they are a relief from all the more intense expressions of what she has felt through the last two years. She assures us that more turtles are yet to come\, but so far each enormous turtle medallion provides a colorful\, circular and magical design. We look forward to seeing Betty’s still-burgeoning artistry\, which is a marvel and a gift and puts the Rogue Valley on the map nationally and internationally.

SUMMARY:Lotus Institute: Heart Sutra Workshop
DESCRIPTION:From the Lotus Institute \nThe Insight That Brings Us To The Other Shore is a gift from our beloved teacher\, Thich Nhat Hanh\, and those who came before him. Thich Nhat Hanh has called the Heart Sutra “the highest vision of the Buddha.” Chanting The Insight That Brings Us To The Other Shore\, Nhat Hanh’s new translation\, can awaken the teacher in us\, the one who shows us the way to our own awakened nature. \nDharma teacher and musician Brian Kimmel (Bk) with Dharma teacher\, Peggy Rowe Ward\, will lead us on a journey of learning with and chanting from The Heart Sutra. In this workshop\, we will: \n\nChant the Insight That Brings Us To The Other Shore\nShare tips on learning the chant and practicing it for ourselves and with our sanghas\nPractice with our aspirations as a means to help bring this teaching into our daily life and where it is needed in the world.\n\nWhen Thich Nhat Hanh completed this translation at 3am in the morning\, a moon ray penetrated his room. Let’s come together to experience the clear light of the moon\, and the deep abiding wisdom of this Sutra and our teacher. \nPlease know: you are welcome. Even if you don’t think you have a voice\, even if you think you can’t chant\, sing\, or carry a tune – your heart can. We hope you will join us.

SUMMARY:Restoring Nature: What People of Faith Can Do to Heal the Earth
DESCRIPTION:Douglas Tallamy’s books have awakened thousands to the problem of wildlife decline and the solution that resides in habitat restoration. This is a solution of which you and your faith community can be a part. The solution can be as close as your backyard or the property surrounding your place of worship. The green teams and green thumbs of faith communities will learn not only about cultivating native plants in the landscapes around them\, but also what can be done to create a transformative movement full of actions ordinary people everywhere can take. \nTo care for God’s creation\, we can start by simply stepping outside the doors of where we gather for worship to make the most of our sacred places. In this webinar\, Tallamy will raise our awareness and equip us to make a difference in our world. \nThis webinar is co-hosted by the Rev. Dr. Brooks Berndt who serves as the Minister of Environmental Justice for the United Church of Christ and the Rev. The post-film discussion will include Craig Minor\, Tony Spaniola\, Mikey Inouye\, and other special guests TBA. \n  \nDay 2 on Saturday\, March 19 at 3:00pm Eastern Daylight Time features a screening of the film The Crossing\, with director George Kurian. A rare\, firsthand account of one of the most dangerous journeys of our time\, this timely\, nail-biting documentary follows the grueling plight of a group of Syrian refugees as they cross the Mediterranean Sea and travel across Europe. The panel discussion will feature director George Kurian and Niamh Ní Bhriain\, coordinator of the Transnational Institute’s War and Pacification Programme. \nDay 3 – World Water Day\, Tuesday\, March 22 at 7:00pm-9:00pm EDT (GMT-04:00) \nThe festival finale features Berta Didn’t Die\, She Multiplied!\, a celebration of the life and legacy of Honduran Indigenous\, feminist\, and environmental activist Berta Cáceres. The film tells the story of the Honduran military coup\, the assassination of Berta\, and the victory in the Indigenous struggle to protect the Gualcarque River. The insidious agents of the local oligarchy\, the World Bank\, and North American corporations continue to kill but that will not stop the social movements. From Flint to Standing Rock to Honduras\, the water is sacred and the power is in the people. \nThis screening is co-sponsored by Mutual Aid Media and Peace Brigades International. \nMORE INFORMATION AND REGISTRATION HERE

SUMMARY:Stand With Ukraine Rally
DESCRIPTION:Oregon District 2 Indivisible\, the Rogue Valley Chapter of Veterans for Peace and Peace House invite you to attend a rally to Stand With Ukraine on Wednesday\, March 2\, at Vogel Plaza in Medford. \nParticipants are asked to wear blue and yellow in honor of Ukraine’s flag\, and to bring signs\, sunflowers\, and donations to benefit Doctors Without Borders\, which is providing aid to people injured and displaced by the conflict. \nWhy Gather?\n\n– Putin’s attack on Ukraine is an act of war that has inspired a worldwide response. It is important to show that the people of Southern Oregon support the independence of Ukraine and condemn the invasion of an independent nation.\n– This is an international crisis and should not be a partisan issue.\n– We are not happy with statements by Trump and GOP leaders who have praised Putin and tried to distract their followers’ attention by blaming the current administration.\n– We are particularly unhappy with our congressman\, Rep. Cliff Bentz\, who – a week after the attack – has remained silent on this issue. We will use this rally to ask him to make a public statement. \nThe groups invite everyone to come out and show their support for peace and the people of Ukraine on this evening. \nBackground: \nORD2 Indivisible is a grassroots organization devoted to keeping our members of Congress and other elected officials accountable. It is based on the Indivisible Guide\, with the goal of preserving a free press\, voting rights\, civil rights\, environmental protections\, health care\, and the protection of our nation’s most vulnerable citizens. It is based on the values of inclusion\, tolerance and fairness in its fight for democracy. \nVeterans for Peace\, Rogue Valley Chapter 156 is part of a global organization of military veterans and allies whose collective efforts are to build a culture of peace by using their experiences and lifting their voices. They inform the public of the true causes of war and the enormous costs of wars\, with an obligation to heal the wounds of wars. The network has over 140 chapters worldwide whose work includes: educating the public\, advocating for a dismantling of the war economy\, providing services that assist veterans and victims of war\, and most significantly\, working to end all wars.

SUMMARY:Ukraine Crisis: NATO and The US Global War Drive
DESCRIPTION:Abroad coalition of peace organizations will host an open meeting on how to respond to the Current Crisis in Ukraine and war threats on Russia. What can do about it? \nPlease join this important online meeting and discussion with leaders from the antiwar movement including (in alphabetical order): \nLeela Anand – ANSWER coalition \nAjamu Baraka – Black Alliance for Peace \nMedea Benjamin – CodePink \nSara Flounders – International Action Center \nMargaret Flowers – Popular Resistance \nBruce Gagnon – Global Network Against Weapons & Nuclear Power in Space \nJoe Jamison – US Peace Council \nMargaret Kimberley – Black Agenda Report \nJeff Mackler – United National Antiwar Coalition \nNancy Price – Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (US) \nSusan Schnall – Veterans For Peace \nDavid Swanson – World Beyond War \nJoe Lombardo will chair. Ajamu Baraka will give an opening statement \nPlease click here to register for the meeting: https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_ 10cVDLQuQR6T3WPeAkJwtw \nOnly a few short months after the chaotic US defeat in Afghanistan\, the US is pushing a war with Russia\, a major nuclear power. US officials insist that the Russians will invade Ukraine. Russia has repeatedly denied this. \nIn recent days the US and some of their allies have closed their embassies and asked their nationals to leave Ukraine. [The US and allies moved their embassies to Lvov in western Ukraine where Nazis predominate.] \nThe Ukrainian military has a force of 150\,000 troops\, that are U.S. trained and armed with modern US weapons\, near the Russian border and the independent regions in Donbass. These independent regions have taken a stand in opposition to the right-wing\, coup government in Kiev\, since 2014. The Ukrainian military has started heavy shelling of the independent areas of Donbass\, which have returned the fire. \nEvery U.S. war in our lifetime has been based on false information\, repeated relentlessly by the corporate media. There is deep apprehension that the US and the Ukrainian government are preparing a “false flag” incident that could lead to a major conflict. \nThe US has tens of thousands of troops in Europe\, it is putting troops on high alert and sending more. They are not only arming the Ukrainian military\, but they are expanding NATO bases and sending additional arms and missiles to other NATO countries in the region. \nIt is important that the U.S. antiwar movement come together to oppose these dangerous war moves. Please join us this evening!

SUMMARY:Sexual and Relationship Violence. Time for Change.
DESCRIPTION:The Jefferson Center presents “Sexual and Relationship Violence:  Time for Change.” on February 13. \n\n\nWhy aren’t sexual violence and relationship violence gone from our society? Susan Moen will review risks\, social norms\, and stereotypes that encourage sexual violence. She will outline programs and strategies for prevention of harm. Register for the Zoom conversation by clicking the link here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZcld-uppzkvE9UV2PX7obDKQt9Hn6P…(link is external)\nFor decades\, prevention work focused on teaching women (always women) to change their behaviors in order to lessen their risk of assault: “how not to get raped\,” “personal safety\,” and “risk reduction.” Recently\, there has been a move toward changing social norms and stereotypes that allow or even encourage sexual violence. What does prevention work look like in the Rogue Valley? What are the goals and strategies of these programs? What do we know now about causes as well as impacts? What can we do personally and as a community? Where is resistance to change? Did COVID change anything? \nAbout the Presenter: Susan Moen is the Executive Director and co-founder of the local non-profit Jackson County SART (Sexual Assault Response Team) which provides direct services to survivors of sexual violence and brings sexual violence prevention classes into K-12 schools\, businesses and community groups. Susan has worked in the field of sexual violence response for over 30 years. \nRegister at https://www.thejeffcenter.org/salon-current-events

SUMMARY:SOCAN Monthly Meeting – Greenhouse Gas Emissions: The Ocean Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Presentation by Dr. Bill Gorham\, marine biologist\, Coastal SOCAN leader\, SOCAN Board of Directors member \nSince we are land-dwelling organisms\, we focus on the climate crisis as an atmospheric and terrestrial issue. If we were dolphins\, we’d have a different point of view. Besides causing warming above the ocean\, greenhouse gases also impact our oceans in many ways\, from causing warming and raising the sea level\, to acidifying the entire marine environment and compromising the survival of many ecologically and commercially important marine species. \nDr. Gorham will help us understand how narrow our airborne view of the climate crisis is by presenting the marine underwater view of this global crisis. \nSOCAN meets monthly  with speakers and movies on Topics related to climate change. \nThese meetings are free and open to the public \nRegistration Required Link

Smoke…and another fire! What should we do? \nCharisse Sydoriak will lead an informational discussion on “What is it like to live in a fire-\nadapted community (FAC)?” To gain a deeper appreciation of how we can live with\nwildfire\, she will introduce the basics of wildfire dynamics\, define key terms\, and identify\ncomponents of a FAC. We’ll then delve into 5 of 10 FAC components: mitigating fire\npotential\, engaging the community\, reducing vulnerabilities at home\, response strategies\,\nand personal safety. Charisse looks forward to hearing the group’s thoughts and ideas on\nhow to overcome challenges and leverage opportunities so that Southern Oregon can\nbecome a truly fire-adapted community. \nCharisse Sydoriak was a pioneer in monitoring fire effects and using fire as a\nmanagement tool\, starting in Yosemite National Park in 1980. She’s\nmanaged hundreds of prescribed natural fires\, trained burn bosses\, served on\nseveral incident management teams\, and was the first female regional fire\nmanagement officer in the National Park Service. \nDuring her career\, she was chief of resources management and research at\nLava Beds and Bandelier National Monuments\, and at Sequoia and Kings Canyon National\nParks. For 7 years she facilitated science integration in the BLM. Charisse retired in\nDecember 2015 after 35 years of federal service. \nIn April 2019\, Charisse joined the Ashland Wildfire Safety Commission. After the 2020\nAlmeda Fire she co-founded the Ashland Volunteer Wildfire Risk Assessment Program to\neducate residents and motivate wildfire risk reduction in Ashland. She is also a member of\nthe Medford Wildfire Mitigation Steering Committee. Charisse’s views at this event are\nher own and do not represent the cities of Ashland or Medford\, Oregon.
