SUMMARY:De-escalation Training by Rogue Action Center
DESCRIPTION:Rogue Action Center will facilitate a free de-escalation training tin two parts: January 20 and 27th from  5:30 – 7:30 pm on Zoom. \n“The RAC facilitates de-escalation training for community members to support local movements for social justice\, and coordinates a volunteer team of de-escalators which helps de-escalate conflicts\, potential violence and minimize disruptions from those who oppose movements for justice. Trained de-escalators can provide support to events and demonstrations in our region to help keep all members of our community safe in the face of growing right wing/white supremacist threats.

We’re holding a de-escalation training over two evenings this month–Thursdays\, January 20th & 27th from 5:30-7:30pm–for folks interested in plugging into this work and learning more about de-escalation. The training will be over Zoom.” \nThis training covers strategies and techniques for more effectively engaging aggravated individuals and groups\, grounding in principles of transformative justice\, and sustaining ourselves for the long haul while doing this challenging work. We keep us safe: whether you’re interested in being part of the RAC’s de-escalation team or just want more tools & confidence for helping de-escalate conflicts in general\, this training is for you!” \nTo RSVP\, ask questions\, or to address accessibility needs\, email deescalation@rogueactioncenter.org.

SUMMARY:Adapting to Life with Wildfire in Our Region
DESCRIPTION:The Jefferson Center Program Committee is pleased to invite you to our next\nsalon/discussion Sunday\, January 9 at 4 pm on Zoom (meeting will open at 3:40 p.m.) \nTo Access Link to Register\, Please visit https://thejeffcenter.org/salon-future-events \nHere we go again! Smoke…and another fire! What should we do? \nCharisse Sydoriak will lead an informational discussion on “What is it like to live in a fire-\nadapted community (FAC)?” To gain a deeper appreciation of how we can live with\nwildfire\, she will introduce the basics of wildfire dynamics\, define key terms\, and identify\ncomponents of a FAC. We’ll then delve into 5 of 10 FAC components: mitigating fire\npotential\, engaging the community\, reducing vulnerabilities at home\, response strategies\,\nand personal safety. Charisse looks forward to hearing the group’s thoughts and ideas on\nhow to overcome challenges and leverage opportunities so that Southern Oregon can\nbecome a truly fire-adapted community. \nCharisse Sydoriak was a pioneer in monitoring fire effects and using fire as a\nmanagement tool\, starting in Yosemite National Park in 1980. She’s\nmanaged hundreds of prescribed natural fires\, trained burn bosses\, served on\nseveral incident management teams\, and was the first female regional fire\nmanagement officer in the National Park Service. \nDuring her career\, she was chief of resources management and research at\nLava Beds and Bandelier National Monuments\, and at Sequoia and Kings Canyon National\nParks. For 7 years she facilitated science integration in the BLM. Charisse retired in\nDecember 2015 after 35 years of federal service. \nIn April 2019\, Charisse joined the Ashland Wildfire Safety Commission. After the 2020\nAlmeda Fire she co-founded the Ashland Volunteer Wildfire Risk Assessment Program to\neducate residents and motivate wildfire risk reduction in Ashland. She is also a member of\nthe Medford Wildfire Mitigation Steering Committee. Charisse’s views at this event are\nher own and do not represent the cities of Ashland or Medford\, Oregon.

SUMMARY:SOCAN: Solar Projects You Can Plug-in To
DESCRIPTION:Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN) and the Ashland Climate Action Project invite you to a presentation by local solar energy enthusiasts Tuesday\, October 26 from 6-7 p.m. Presenters include Jim Hartman from Ashland Solar Cooperative and Ray Sanchez-Pascador\, from Solarize Rogue. \nAccording to SOCAN\, “One of the most effective actions individuals can take to address the climate crisis is to electrify their lives as much as possible. While this is very effective\, even if our electricity is produced in a fossil fuel-powered generation facility\, it is even more effective if our electricity is generated by solar panels\, wind turbines or other fossil-free means. Unfortunately\, not everyone owns their own home\, or has a South-facing roof on which to install the panels.” \n“Ray Sanchez-Pescador with Solarize Rogue will discuss successful efforts to provide community members the opportunity to own solar panels that are not installed on their roof but generate electricity that replaces what they take from the grid that might have otherwise been generated in a fossil fuel-powered generation plant. Jim Hartmann from the ‘Ashland Solar Cooperative’ will then discuss how this group is collaborating with Solarize Rogue and planning to bring the option of community solar projects to the Ashland community.” \nThe program will be held via ZOOM and is open to the public. There is no charge for joining the meeting\, but participants must register. \nClick Here to Register \n  \n
