SUMMARY:Save Our Hospital Rally
DESCRIPTION:Health Care for All Oregon \nPRESS RELEASE \nFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – January 12\, 2026\nContact: Lauri Hoagland/ lauri7757@aol.com 1+707-695-6262 \nRally to Protest Service Closures at Asante Ashland Community Hospital \nAsante has announced plans to close the birthing services and stop inpatient surgery at Asante Ashland Community Hospital (AACH) by spring 2026. \nRogue Valley HealthCare for All Oregon (RVHCAO) is a local nonprofit affiliate of HealthCare for All Oregon in Southern Oregon. Our mission is to advocate for an equitable\, affordable\, comprehensive\, high-quality publicly funded universal health care system in Oregon. We insist that Asante honor its 2013 agreement with the community of Ashland to continue through 2028 to provide general hospital services\, including birthing\, in-patient and surgical services\, to the residents of Ashland. \nAshland Community Hospital has been an essential service in our community since 1907. Importantly\, the Ashland city charter\, grants the city of Ashland the authority and direction to maintain a hospital within the city limits of our community. We demand that our elected officials honor this responsibility by insisting that Asante follow the conditions set forth in the 2013 agreement. \nThe Ashland birthing center\, providing a water birth option and doulas\, is unique in this region of Oregon. More than 200 births occurred at the hospital last year. Medford will not be able to offer these services in their current form. Moving in-patient services 11 miles away will impose unnecessary hardship and potentially life-threatening consequences on Ashland residents\, particularly the elderly who represent 30 percent of our community’s population. \nSenator Merkley recently cautioned Asante President and CEO Tom Gessel with regard to the planned closures: “I anticipate that this decision will hurt the health and safety of individuals seeking inpatient care\, as well as expectant mothers and newborns\, who will no longer have local access to care.” \nWe must raise our voices against these planned closures and voice our support for revamping and reinvesting\nin the essential healthcare AACH currently provides. In addition to attending the rally\, citizens are encouraged\nto speak at the Ashland City Council meeting from 6-9:30 pm on January 20\, 2026 and/or send testimony via\nhttps://www.ashlandoregon.gov/FormCenter/City-Recorder-5/City-Council-Public-Testimony-Form-92

SUMMARY:Film 'Māori': A Journey With Healers\, Elders & Knowledge Keepers
DESCRIPTION:Southern Oregon Pachamama Alliance (SOPA) is presenting the film Māori\, part of a series of The Eternal Song films produced by nonprofit Science and Nonduality (SAND). \nMāori is a cinematic invitation into the healing traditions of Aotearoa\, a journey carried by Māori healers\, elders\, and knowledge keepers who tend to intergenerational wounds through land\, language\, and ceremony. Filmed in close relationship with those who carry ancestral wisdom\, Māori reveals how healing is not an individual pursuit but a collective remembering – guided by spirit\, whenua (land)\, and the relational threads that colonial disruption could not sever. \nWith breathtaking imagery and intimate storytelling\, the film brings us into the spaces where trauma is not “treated” but held\, where stories\, prayers\, medicines\, and rituals offer pathways back to connection. Māori does not explain Māori healing. It moves with it – listening to what still pulses beneath silence\, and honoring what remains alive in the hands of those who never forgot. \nSAND’s vision for the 12-film documentary series is to honor Indigenous resilience\, illuminate sacred wisdom held for humanity and Earth\, and invite healing across communities facing trauma and colonial erasure. \nThe Eternal Song film series emerged from a deep calling to bear witness to both the wounds of colonization and the powerful ancestral wisdom that continues to guide Indigenous communities toward healing. Over two years\, the film’s production team’s journey took them across sacred lands where they encountered stories of profound suffering\, injustice\, and beauty alongside remarkable resilience. \nSAND believes the Indigenous voices offer vital medicine for our fractured times\, helping us all to remember our fundamental kinship with Mother Earth and to reawaken to the eternal song of existence that calls us back to belonging. In their words\, the project is a “humble contribution to a necessary global conversation about how we might collectively heal from historical traumas and remember\, re-imagine our place in the sacred web of life.” \nSee more about SOPA. See more about SAND. Donations are gratefully accepted at the door but not required.

SUMMARY:Beyondananda and Beyond Stand Up With Swami\, Sit Down With Steve
DESCRIPTION:At a time when we are divided by the beliefs in our head\, here’s a chance to unite around the love in our hearts!\nAnd the best way to do that is through hearty laughter.\nSo you are invited to join us for an evening of cosmic comedy featuring Swami Beyondananda and his slightly-more-serious alter ego Steve Bhaerman.\nSet One: Stand Up With Swami … In these serious times – where there’s definitely something funny going on – laughter keeps us sane. This heart-opening\, mind-expanding\, funny and insightful comedy set will help you wake up laughing — and provide plenty of “aha’s” in the wake of the ha-ha’s. Oh\, and as part of the program the Swami will answer your questions … and you will question his answers. \nSet Two: Sit Down With Steve Bhaerman … Swami’s alter ego Steve Bhaerman\, in addition to being a funny guy in his own right\, has also authored a “serious” book with cellular biologist Bruce Lipton. Spontaneous Evolution: Our Positive Future and a Way to Get There From Here\, has been translated into 26 languages\, and has been called “world-changing” by both Deepak Chopra and political commentator Thom Hartmann. \nIn this “sit down” with Steve Bhaerman\, Steve explores how we use levity to “defy gravity” in these seriously unfunny times\, and how humor itself can be a tool for evolutionary transformation. You’ll laugh while you learn\, and learn while you laugh.

SUMMARY:SOCAN’s Ashland CEAP Workshop Series Continues with a session on Compost
DESCRIPTION:In 2017\, the Ashland City Council passed a citizen led policy called the Climate and Energy Action Plan (CEAP). The goals of the plan were to reduce community greenhouse gas emissions and prepare the city to be more resilient to climate change impacts. As the Ashland Climate Collaborative notes on their website: “Eight years in\, the CEAP is still a great foundation for reaching our climate goals.” Over the intervening years\, residential awareness of the CEAP has decreased. In order to reverse that trend\, Southern Oregon Climate Action Now Executive Director Danial Scotton\, has facilitated a series of open public workshops during which aspects of the CEAP are discussed in relation to CEAP goals\, the current status of action\, and what needs to be done. \nThis is thee third workshop in the series will address the subject of Food Waste and Compost. This will be held in the Gresham Room of Ashland Public Library.

SUMMARY:Southern Oregon Wildfire Risk: The Climate Connection
DESCRIPTION:Fire and smoke have become an annual source of concern for Oregonians\, especially for those of us living in the Southwest. As wildfire trends become increasingly obvious\, questions about their drivers become more urgent. Yet\, many factors affect wildfire behavior and impact: forest management\, disruptions to fire’s natural role\, patterns of development\, and\, importantly\, changes to the climate.
What do we know about how wildfires are changing\, the causes\, and options for climate adaptation?

Dr. Chris Adlam\, Southwest Regional Fire Specialist with the Oregon State University Extension Service\, Southern Oregon Research and Extension Center\, will be the featured speaker at the August Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN) monthly general meeting. Adlam will discuss how climate is influencing fire risk in the region\, what climate projections portend for our future\, and what steps we can take to minimize the risk. There is no charge for attending SOCAN events.
