SUMMARY:Do You Have a Right to a Safe\, Healthy Environment?
DESCRIPTION:Do you think the Oregon Constitution gives you the right to a safe and healthy environment? If so\, think again. As an Oregonian\, you do not. Even though the constitutions of more than three quarters of the countries on earth have explicit reference to environmental rights or responsibilities\, in the United States\, only if you live in Hawaii\, Illinois\, Massachusetts\, Montana\, Pennsylvania\, or Rhode Island\, is your right to a healthy environment constitutionally protected. \nThe Oregon Coalition for an Environmental Rights (OCERA) Amendment seeks to remedy this oversight. Melissa Martin\, Coordinator of the educational and ballot initiative efforts of OCERA will be visiting the Rogue Valley from March 31 through April 2 to offer a series of programs during which she will explore ‘Why an Environmental Rights Amendment’ and invite area residents to offer personal stories\, testimonies\, and feedback regarding local and regional environmental harms we have experienced from government action\, or perhaps inaction. \nSouthern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN) is hosting a discussion on this issue at its March General Meeting with a guest speaker from Oregon Coalition for an\nEnvironmental Rights Amendment (OCERA). The meeting is a free\, public gathering. The meeting will be structured as a listening session focused on the Oregon Environmental Rights Amendment and its relevance to climate action. https://www.oceraunited.org/ \nRather than a traditional lecture\, this gathering will center community voices\, questions\, and concerns about what environmental rights mean in practice and how constitutional protections could shape climate policy\, accountability\, and long-term stewardship. SUMMARY:SOCAN’s Ashland CEAP Workshop Series Continues with a session on Compost
DESCRIPTION:In 2017\, the Ashland City Council passed a citizen led policy called the Climate and Energy Action Plan (CEAP). The goals of the plan were to reduce community greenhouse gas emissions and prepare the city to be more resilient to climate change impacts. As the Ashland Climate Collaborative notes on their website: “Eight years in\, the CEAP is still a great foundation for reaching our climate goals.” Over the intervening years\, residential awareness of the CEAP has decreased. In order to reverse that trend\, Southern Oregon Climate Action Now Executive Director Danial Scotton\, has facilitated a series of open public workshops during which aspects of the CEAP are discussed in relation to CEAP goals\, the current status of action\, and what needs to be done. \nThis is thee third workshop in the series will address the subject of Food Waste and Compost. This will be held in the Gresham Room of Ashland Public Library.

The ride is for people of all ages and abilities which reflects the vision of Streets for Everyone; a transportation system that is safe\, convenient and efficient for everyone\, independent of how they travel for everyday\, short\, in-town trips. The ride is sponsored by Streets for Everyone\, a volunteer team of the Ashland Climate Collaborative (a 501(c)3 organization). \nThese bike rides happen wind\, rain\, or shine except when the air quality index (AQI) is at or above 100. We give free Bicycle Benefits stickers to all FFBR riders. SUMMARY:Southern Oregon Wildfire Risk: The Climate Connection
DESCRIPTION:Fire and smoke have become an annual source of concern for Oregonians\, especially for those of us living in the Southwest. As wildfire trends become increasingly obvious\, questions about their drivers become more urgent. Yet\, many factors affect wildfire behavior and impact: forest management\, disruptions to fire’s natural role\, patterns of development\, and\, importantly\, changes to the climate. 
What do we know about how wildfires are changing\, the causes\, and options for climate adaptation? 

Dr. Chris Adlam\, Southwest Regional Fire Specialist with the Oregon State University Extension Service\, Southern Oregon Research and Extension Center\, will be the featured speaker at the August Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN) monthly general meeting. Adlam will discuss how climate is influencing fire risk in the region\, what climate projections portend for our future\, and what steps we can take to minimize the risk. There is no charge for attending SOCAN events.

SUMMARY:How Climate Science Divides Us
\, How to Build Consensus
DESCRIPTION:An abundance of scientific evidence is readily available confirming the reality of human-induced global warming and its climate consequences – and the causes. There is also a wealth of evidence regarding what is needed to divert the current climate trajectory which threatens life on the planet as we know it. Given this evidence\, climate scientists and activists are frustrated and disappointed by the limited success of climate mitigation policies. \nDr Rob Winthrop\, a member of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Maryland\, has reflected on this conundrum and will discuss his thinking on the reasons for this failure. Dr. Winthrop’s presentation is the focus of the July Southern Oregon Climate Action Now free monthly public general meetings. \nWinthrop argues that climate change is not an environmental problem. It is a social problem with profound environmental consequences. While acknowledging the soundness of climate science\, he questions how the science has been used to shape policies around highly technical objectives (such as “net zero” emissions) that lack social salience and fail to build consensus. He suggests that we should encourage social mobilization for a climate-positive future around shared goals\, not beliefs (including a belief in human-caused climate change). Thus\, he thinks that rather than focusing primarily on reducing greenhouse gas emissions\, we should pursue climate action as a co-benefit of other socially desired goals\, such as energy efficiency and self-reliance.

Scheduled 2025 “banking hours” are 11am to 3 pm\, Saturdays and Sundays\, from May 24 through August 31. \nGuests can interact with costumed docents sharing stories of late 19th Century banking practices\, gold shipping\, and handshake deals; step behind the counter and peer in drawers containing old checks\, stage schedules\, and paperwork; and enter the vault that stored millions in gold!\nVisitors can spend as much or as little time as they like — although we suggest they allow at least 30 minutes. This will be consolidated in this month’s NATO summit.\nCaught between Trump shocks\, the Ukraine War\, and the Russia/China quasi alliance\, Europe is in the midst of war\, turmoil\, and massive remilitarization. \nIn addition to increasing the danger of war\, massive cuts in social welfare spending provide openings for renewed European fascism. France\, Germany\, Britain\, and Poland are pressing military collaboration and creation of a new European Union military within and potentially independent from NATO as anti-Russian fervor takes hold. Germany’s massive rearmament adds to anxiety in Paris as well as in Moscow. And incidents in the Baltic Sea could lead to escalating – even nuclear – conflict. \nTo help our movements respond\, Massachusetts Peace Action (MAPA) and Campaign for Peace\, Disarmament and Common Security (CPDCS) have organized this webinar featuring Kate Hudson and Reiner Braun. \nKate Hudson is a British political activist and academic and vice-president of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) and co-national secretary of Left Unity. She has served as CND chair\, general secretary from 2010 to 2024\, and as an officer of the Stop the War Coalition. She is a board member of the International Peace Bureau. \nReiner Braun is a German journalist\, historian\, and peace activist. Until recently\, he was executive director of the International Peace Bureau and previously served as IPB president. Reiner has been involved in the peace movement since 1982. DESCRIPTION:Following up on an earlier Massachusetts Peace Action Education Fund Conference will be gathering to explore paths to protect the federal budget supporting public schools\, and continuing to try to reach out to parents and grandparents among our Peace Action affiliates and their local allies. Register here. The threats to federal education programs have become acute. Funds for PELL grants\, title I and disability programs are at risk in the Trump/Musk Administration. The proposed termination of the Dept of Education will weaken other school programs. Though organizations representing teachers and educators\, including NEA\, AFT and AAUP\, have come together to resist the proposed cuts\,\, it remains difficult to reach parents\, who generally lack statewide organizations. Their local school district organizations rarely address the federal budget.
