SUMMARY:An Evening with Robin Greenfield - The Year of Foraging
DESCRIPTION:For one year Robin Greenfield is foraging every bite of his food and medicine. A year without grocery stores\, restaurants\, pharmacies or even a garden. “Nature” is his garden!\nIs it possible to eat in harmony with Earth and live in reciprocity? Robin wholeheartedly believes so and is putting this love and devotion for Earth into bold action as he harvests the food and medicine that is growing freely and abundantly all around us. \nHe is traveling to our community to share his foraging journey and celebrate the individuals and organizations in our community working for a more resilient\, local food system. He will also share about the 1 Million Community Fruit Trees Initiative and invite us to get involved in this grassroots collaborative effort in food sovereignty. \nJoin us for an eye opening exploration of food sovereignty through the food and medicine that is growing abundantly all around us. \nEvent Details:\nHosted by Bellview Grange 1050 Tolman Creek Road\, Ashland\, OR\n6:00-8:30 PM

SUMMARY:Another Case for Green Energy Sovereignty
DESCRIPTION:By far the main contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions is the extraction\, processing and combustion of fossil fuels. This makes clear that understanding energy issues is fundamental to understanding and solving the climate crisis. \nThis month’s SOCAN General Meeting will feature SOCAN Executive Director Daniel Scotton presenting\, “Geopolitics & Our Energy Supply: Another Case for Green Energy Sovereignty.” This talk will examine the growing instability surrounding global fossil fuel markets\, how international transportation and supply chains influence energy prices\, and why recent disruptions highlight the need for greater electrification and local energy resilience. \nFrom international conflict to shipping bottlenecks and market volatility\, energy systems are increasingly tied to geopolitical uncertainty. This presentation will explore why transitioning toward renewable energy and regional energy independence is not only a climate solution\, but also an economic and community stability strategy for Southern Oregon and beyond. Scotton is discussing yet another reason that Oregon should be heavily and rapidly investing in its clean energy supply. \nThere is no charge for attending SOCAN events.

SUMMARY:Be the Change: A Musical Invitation
DESCRIPTION:The Rogue Valley Peace Choir has inspired audiences to standing ovations this season with powerful messages of peace\, social justice\, and care-taking the Earth. \nNow\, it promises singing\, dancing\, and wildly engaging percussive flourishes during the final concerts of the the choir’s 23rd season. With these performances — passionately directed by Rob Griswell-Lowry and skillfully accompanied by Dr. Mikiko Petrucelli — the nearly 100-member choir also invites the community to “be the change we want to see in the world.” \nEarly arrival at both venues is recommended as seats are expected to fill quickly. A suggested donation of $20 is gratefully accepted\, but not required. \nThe concerts’ theme comes from the title of the song Be the Change. The song’s lyrics revolve around the idea that we can’t look outside ourselves for change\, but must embody the changes we want to see in the world. The song quotes the Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Jr.\, who said\, “Darkness does not drive out the darkness\, only light can do that. Hatred does not drive out the hatred\, only love can do that.” \n“As a choir\,” says Griswell-Lowry\, “we sing truths like these to remind ourselves\, and all who hear our songs\, that the responsibility for creating a world worth living in belongs to all of us. \n“We’ve all heard that the pen is mightier than the sword\,” he adds\, “As singers in our choral community\, we also know that the power of the pen — of words and ideas — is amplified and enhanced by the music that makes songs. When the Peace Choir shares its songs with our community\, we not only share our hope for a better world\, we help listeners find — or rediscover — their own hope.” \nSongs for the choir’s repertoire are chosen by choir members themselves to express these themes in heart-felt and thoughtful ways. Choir members continue to be a part of the growing movement that recognizes how pro-actively and collectively we can make a difference on many fronts: we can shed light on injustice\, we can support an end to wars\, and we can take care of our Earth and each other when we work together.

SUMMARY:Do You Have a Right to a Safe\, Healthy Environment?
DESCRIPTION:Do you think the Oregon Constitution gives you the right to a safe and healthy environment? If so\, think again. As an Oregonian\, you do not. Even though the constitutions of more than three quarters of the countries on earth have explicit reference to environmental rights or responsibilities\, in the United States\, only if you live in Hawaii\, Illinois\, Massachusetts\, Montana\, Pennsylvania\, or Rhode Island\, is your right to a healthy environment constitutionally protected. \nThe Oregon Coalition for an Environmental Rights (OCERA) Amendment seeks to remedy this oversight. Melissa Martin\, Coordinator of the educational and ballot initiative efforts of OCERA will be visiting the Rogue Valley from March 31 through April 2 to offer a series of programs during which she will explore ‘Why an Environmental Rights Amendment’ and invite area residents to offer personal stories\, testimonies\, and feedback regarding local and regional environmental harms we have experienced from government action\, or perhaps inaction. \nSouthern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN) is hosting a discussion on this issue at its March General Meeting with a guest speaker from Oregon Coalition for an\nEnvironmental Rights Amendment (OCERA). The meeting is a free\, public gathering. The meeting will be structured as a listening session focused on the Oregon Environmental Rights Amendment and its relevance to climate action. https://www.oceraunited.org/ \nRather than a traditional lecture\, this gathering will center community voices\, questions\, and concerns about what environmental rights mean in practice and how constitutional protections could shape climate policy\, accountability\, and long-term stewardship. The session is designed to inform future advocacy while ensuring community perspectives help guide the conversation. Email SOCAN with questions about this general meeting. \nAdditional OCERA programs will be offered throughout the region:\n• 2 p.m. Tuesday\, March 31\, at Mountain Meadows\, Ashland\n• 4 p.m. Wednesday\, April 1\, in the Science Theater at SOU\n• 5 p.m. Thursday\, April 2\, at Troon Vineyard and Farm\, 1475 Kubli Rd\, Grants Pass. Co-sponsored by Troon Vineyard and Farm.

SUMMARY:Oregon Citizens’ Utility Board Speaks in Medford
DESCRIPTION:The Oregon Citizens’ Utility Board (CUB) members are the featured speakers at this month’s Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN) general meeting. \nFor four decades\, CUB has been Oregon’s leading ratepayer advocate\, ensuring that households and small businesses are represented in utility decisions. In 2025\, their work has delivered tangible wins: protecting customers from unnecessary rate hikes\, pushing utilities to accelerate clean energy investments\, and holding regulators accountable to Oregon’s climate goals. Their victories this year highlight the power of community advocacy in shaping a more affordable\, reliable\, and sustainable energy future for all Oregonians. \nThere is no charge for attending SOCAN events.

SUMMARY:SOCAN’s Ashland CEAP Workshop Series Continues with a session on Compost
DESCRIPTION:In 2017\, the Ashland City Council passed a citizen led policy called the Climate and Energy Action Plan (CEAP). The goals of the plan were to reduce community greenhouse gas emissions and prepare the city to be more resilient to climate change impacts. As the Ashland Climate Collaborative notes on their website: “Eight years in\, the CEAP is still a great foundation for reaching our climate goals.” Over the intervening years\, residential awareness of the CEAP has decreased. In order to reverse that trend\, Southern Oregon Climate Action Now Executive Director Danial Scotton\, has facilitated a series of open public workshops during which aspects of the CEAP are discussed in relation to CEAP goals\, the current status of action\, and what needs to be done. \nThis is thee third workshop in the series will address the subject of Food Waste and Compost. This will be held in the Gresham Room of Ashland Public Library.

SUMMARY:Southern Oregon Wildfire Risk: The Climate Connection
DESCRIPTION:Fire and smoke have become an annual source of concern for Oregonians\, especially for those of us living in the Southwest. As wildfire trends become increasingly obvious\, questions about their drivers become more urgent. Yet\, many factors affect wildfire behavior and impact: forest management\, disruptions to fire’s natural role\, patterns of development\, and\, importantly\, changes to the climate.
What do we know about how wildfires are changing\, the causes\, and options for climate adaptation?

Dr. Chris Adlam\, Southwest Regional Fire Specialist with the Oregon State University Extension Service\, Southern Oregon Research and Extension Center\, will be the featured speaker at the August Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN) monthly general meeting. Adlam will discuss how climate is influencing fire risk in the region\, what climate projections portend for our future\, and what steps we can take to minimize the risk. There is no charge for attending SOCAN events.

SUMMARY:How Climate Science Divides Us
\, How to Build Consensus
DESCRIPTION:An abundance of scientific evidence is readily available confirming the reality of human-induced global warming and its climate consequences – and the causes. There is also a wealth of evidence regarding what is needed to divert the current climate trajectory which threatens life on the planet as we know it. Given this evidence\, climate scientists and activists are frustrated and disappointed by the limited success of climate mitigation policies. \nDr Rob Winthrop\, a member of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Maryland\, has reflected on this conundrum and will discuss his thinking on the reasons for this failure. Dr. Winthrop’s presentation is the focus of the July Southern Oregon Climate Action Now free monthly public general meetings. \nWinthrop argues that climate change is not an environmental problem. It is a social problem with profound environmental consequences. While acknowledging the soundness of climate science\, he questions how the science has been used to shape policies around highly technical objectives (such as “net zero” emissions) that lack social salience and fail to build consensus. He suggests that we should encourage social mobilization for a climate-positive future around shared goals\, not beliefs (including a belief in human-caused climate change). Thus\, he thinks that rather than focusing primarily on reducing greenhouse gas emissions\, we should pursue climate action as a co-benefit of other socially desired goals\, such as energy efficiency and self-reliance.

SUMMARY:Music & Song: ‘Be a Light’ for Peace\, Justice\, the Earth
DESCRIPTION:The Rogue Valley Peace Choir — now celebrating its 22nd year — is presenting a concert entitled Be a Light. The choir — directed by Rob Griswell-Lowry and accompanied by Mikiko Petrucelli — is a community\, secular choir dedicated to building peace\, equality\, social justice\, and stewardship of our planet through song. The concert’s Be a Light theme is inspired by one of the songs in the choir’s repertoire that encourages people not to “hide in the dark\,” but to be a light in a world full of hate\, to be peace in a time full of war\, and to make a difference where change is needed. Other songs in the repertoire express the choir’s passion for recognizing the connection to everyone in our community and beyond; for supporting social justice\, diversity and self acceptance; and for treading lightly on our Mother Earth. While the concerts are free\, donations of any amount are welcome\, with a suggested donation of $15 for adults; no one will be turned away. Donations support the choir’s ability to perform for free at schools\, senior homes\, and community events throughout the year. See more about the choir and its staff.

SUMMARY:Gather to Honor the Earth\, Rebalance Ourselves
DESCRIPTION:Southern Oregon Pachamama Alliance (SOPA) is hosting a Spring Equinox Ceremony near the upper duck pond at Lithia Park in Ashland. Parking is available off Winburn Way\, just north of the Granite Street intersection. Everyone is invited. \nThe spring equinox always arrives when we seem most ready to welcome the transition of seasons. At this time of the year\, day and night are in balance\, a perfect time to seek balance in our internal lives as well. In light of all the turmoil we are experiencing currently\, it is a perfect time to pause for a moment or two to be with ourselves and friends while tapping into the greatest source of all – what some call\, the Pachamama. For a short time\, at least\, nothing is required of us\, we can throw away\, or hide\, the “to do” list. We can just show up and be in the flow of ceremony. \nSOPA has hosted simple Solstice and Equinox celebrations\, facilitated by Louise Paré\, since the winter of 2012. The celebrations are centered on gratitude while gently reflecting on themes related to the season\, recent events or the state of our world at this time. Attendees are invited to speak from their hearts or to simply be in silence in community with others.
