DESCRIPTION:Southern Oregon Pachamama Alliance (SOPA) is hosting a Spring Equinox Ceremony near the upper duck pond at Lithia Park in Ashland. Parking is available off Winburn Way\, just north of the Granite Street intersection. Everyone is invited. \nThe spring equinox always arrives when we seem most ready to welcome the transition of seasons. At this time of the year\, day and night are in balance\, a perfect time to seek balance in our internal lives as well. In light of all the turmoil we are experiencing currently\, it is a perfect time to pause for a moment or two to be with ourselves and friends while tapping into the greatest source of all – what some call\, the Pachamama. For a short time\, at least\, nothing is required of us\, we can throw away\, or hide\, the “to do” list. We can just show up and be in the flow of ceremony. \nSOPA has hosted simple Solstice and Equinox celebrations\, facilitated by Louise Paré\, since the winter of 2012. The celebrations are centered on gratitude while gently reflecting on themes related to the season\, recent events or the state of our world at this time. Attendees are invited to speak from their hearts or to simply be in silence in community with others.

SUMMARY:Ashland City Council Votes on Climate Policy
DESCRIPTION:Ashland City Council will deliberate and vote on a pollution fee ordinance aimed to incentivize developers to build new homes with efficient\, electric appliances. The goal of the pollution fee is to ensure that the majority of new built homes in Ashland are built with the health of residents and the climate in mind. The ordinance is designed to improve indoor air quality and remove health risks caused by gas appliances in the home\, while contributing to Ashland’s climate goal of reducing emissions. If the ordinance is passed\, those who choose to install gas appliances in newly constructed homes will be charged an up-front fee based on the lifecycle of each gas appliance and its carbon emissions. The fee would not impact existing homes. This will be the first policy of its kind in Oregon.

These mature and old-growth forests offer one of our best natural defenses against the impacts of climate change. But these carbon-storing powerhouses are so much more than that. \nAs the film crew travels across America exploring our different old-growth forests\, they learn more about the value that these ancient ecosystems have for the communities that depend on them. We learn that looming threats like logging\, development\, wildfires and invasive species would devastate these landscapes. These forests could be lost forever unless we can demonstrate widespread support for protecting them. This year\, the public has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to forever change the way our government manages our federal public lands. Through local advocates and grassroots storytelling\, the film makes a case for protecting mature and old-growth forests across the federal estate and shows how the audience can help.

DESCRIPTION:Pacific Northwest Forest Climate Alliance to host webinar on Northwest Forest Plan Amendment. \nOn August 30th\, the US Forest Service will release the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the proposed changes to the Northwest Forest Plan. For 30 years\, the Northwest Forest Plan (NWFP) has guided forest management across the PNW on federal lands. This will be the first amendment to the NWFP in 30 years\, and presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to establish better protections for mature and old growth forests\, meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities and a fighting chance at mitigating the climate crisis. \nAmong the key issues the Forest Service needs to address in the updated Forest Plan are tribal inclusion & fire stewardship and the protection of mature & old growth forests. To ensure the NWFP amendment enables a more just & sustainable future for our forests & communities rather than repeating the mistakes and injustices of the past\, our communities need to speak out & comment on the proposed changes. \nJoin PNFCA Tuesday\, September 10th at noon for a deep dive into these topics and what’s at stake in the NWFP\, and to get resources & information to submit effective public comments.
