Our community conversation event is the perfect opportunity to discuss climate action and sustainability. \nYour voice is valuable—see you there! \nSOCAN is hosting its second Community Conversation event in lieu of our regular September monthly meeting. Due to the Medford library’s large room being under renovation this month\, we’ve chosen to partner with Rogue Climate and bring the event to their office in Phoenix. We are excited to expand the community conversation to include our partners at Rogue Climate\, and we expect a larger turn out this month because of it. This event will also coincide with the NYC Climate Week events\, running from September 22nd through the 26th. You can learn more here. \nIn keeping with the previous community conversation\, this event is focused on creating a space where voices can join in solidarity. Where the community of climate conscious individuals can work from common ground\, and enjoy imagining the possibilities of where our respective movements can help to guide our communities. DESCRIPTION:Environmental activist Alex Haraus and cinematographers Aidan Kranz and Elena Jean spent the last year exploring some of the last remaining ancient forests on public lands in the US. These mature and old-growth forests offer one of our best natural defenses against the impacts of climate change. But these carbon-storing powerhouses are so much more than that. \nAs the film crew travels across America exploring our different old-growth forests\, they learn more about the value that these ancient ecosystems have for the communities that depend on them. We learn that looming threats like logging\, development\, wildfires and invasive species would devastate these landscapes. These forests could be lost forever unless we can demonstrate widespread support for protecting them. This year\, the public has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to forever change the way our government manages our federal public lands. Through local advocates and grassroots storytelling\, the film makes a case for protecting mature and old-growth forests across the federal estate and shows how the audience can help.

DESCRIPTION:Pacific Northwest Forest Climate Alliance to host webinar on Northwest Forest Plan Amendment. \nOn August 30th\, the US Forest Service will release the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the proposed changes to the Northwest Forest Plan. For 30 years\, the Northwest Forest Plan (NWFP) has guided forest management across the PNW on federal lands. This will be the first amendment to the NWFP in 30 years\, and presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to establish better protections for mature and old growth forests\, meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities and a fighting chance at mitigating the climate crisis. \nAmong the key issues the Forest Service needs to address in the updated Forest Plan are tribal inclusion & fire stewardship and the protection of mature & old growth forests. To ensure the NWFP amendment enables a more just & sustainable future for our forests & communities rather than repeating the mistakes and injustices of the past\, our communities need to speak out & comment on the proposed changes. \nJoin PNFCA Tuesday\, September 10th at noon for a deep dive into these topics and what’s at stake in the NWFP\, and to get resources & information to submit effective public comments.
