SUMMARY:Be the Change: A Musical Invitation
DESCRIPTION:The Rogue Valley Peace Choir has inspired audiences to standing ovations this season with powerful messages of peace\, social justice\, and care-taking the Earth. \nNow\, it promises singing\, dancing\, and wildly engaging percussive flourishes during the final concerts of the the choir’s 23rd season. With these performances — passionately directed by Rob Griswell-Lowry and skillfully accompanied by Dr. Mikiko Petrucelli — the nearly 100-member choir also invites the community to “be the change we want to see in the world.” \nEarly arrival at both venues is recommended as seats are expected to fill quickly. A suggested donation of $20 is gratefully accepted\, but not required. \nThe concerts’ theme comes from the title of the song Be the Change. The song’s lyrics revolve around the idea that we can’t look outside ourselves for change\, but must embody the changes we want to see in the world. The song quotes the Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Jr.\, who said\, “Darkness does not drive out the darkness\, only light can do that. Hatred does not drive out the hatred\, only love can do that.” \n“As a choir\,” says Griswell-Lowry\, “we sing truths like these to remind ourselves\, and all who hear our songs\, that the responsibility for creating a world worth living in belongs to all of us. \n“We’ve all heard that the pen is mightier than the sword\,” he adds\, “As singers in our choral community\, we also know that the power of the pen — of words and ideas — is amplified and enhanced by the music that makes songs. When the Peace Choir shares its songs with our community\, we not only share our hope for a better world\, we help listeners find — or rediscover — their own hope.” \nSongs for the choir’s repertoire are chosen by choir members themselves to express these themes in heart-felt and thoughtful ways. Choir members continue to be a part of the growing movement that recognizes how pro-actively and collectively we can make a difference on many fronts: we can shed light on injustice\, we can support an end to wars\, and we can take care of our Earth and each other when we work together.

SUMMARY:Protest Avelo Airlines: Sign the Petition
DESCRIPTION:ORD2 Indivisible is planning a protest at Rogue County International Airport\, Medford\, to tell Avelo Airlines: “Stop helping ICE deport our neighbors.” There will be demonstrations at every airport Avelo serves to call for a passenger boycott until Avelo breaks with ICE. \nAvelo\, a budget carrier\, recently announced a contract to begin operating deportation flights for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement starting May 12. Avelo flies between Medford and Burbank\, Calif.\, every Monday and Friday. \nThe location will be Biddle Road near the entrance and exit to the airport. Participants in the demonstration can find free parking along O’Hare Boulevard\, which tees into Biddle opposite the airport entrance\, or pay a small amount for short-term parking at the airport. \nORD2’s Community Protection Team (CPT)\, which is organizing this action\, will have a large banner to display\, but participants are encouraged to make and bring signs communicating our solidarity with our undocumented sisters and brothers and our displeasure at Avelo’s complicity with the Trump roundups. \nAs an aid to sorting out the logistics\, please let CPT co-leader Herb Rothschild know if you’re planning to come. And everyone can put pressure on Avelo by signing the national “We won’t fly” petition.

SUMMARY:Dreams Have No Borders: Varsity Theater
DESCRIPTION:Dreams Have No Borders \nTWO SHOWINGS AT THE VARSITY THEATRE \nSaturday\, June 22\, 7:30-9:30 PM \nSunday\, June 23\, 3:00-5:00 PM \nVarsity Theatre\, 166 E Main St\, Ashland \n“Dreams Have No Borders\,” a deeply moving opera-turned-film based on over a year of interviews\, story collection\, and immersion in the lives of Latino immigrants in the Rogue Valley\, tells the timely story of a young mother’s harrowing journey to cross the border with her baby to find safety with her sister in the USA. Although the opera addresses the often harrowing\, real-world challenges faced by asylum seekers—including cartel violence—the core of the story is the love between two sisters divided by a border\, and the piece carries a hopeful\, uplifting\, and human tone. \nWritten by local creators Ethan Gans-Morse and Tiziana DellaRovere and produced by the local nonprofit Anima Mundi Productions\, the film features three Grammy-winning singers\, the Delgani String Quartet (called “the state’s finest chamber ensemble” by Oregon ArtsWatch)\, the Teokalli Aztec Dancers\, stage direction by Valerie Rachelle (Oregon Cabaret)\, and film direction by 3-time Emmy award winning filmmaker Jan Thompson. \nWatch a 2-minute video trailer and order tickets at www.HumanityTickets.com \nOr call 541-833-3066 \nNote that tickets are sold by Anima Mundi Productions\, NOT the Varsity Theatre.
