SUMMARY:Storytelling and Potluck Lunch with David West
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, February 17 @ 3:00pm in the Great Hall RVUUF will host a potluck and storytelling afternoon with David West\, (Enrolled: Citizen Potawatomi Nation) and Director Emeritus of SOU’s Native American Studies Program.  After inviting everyone to share in a water and food blessing\, David will share stories with a focus on water and seven generations planning.  This is a wonderful opportunity to experience traditional oral storytelling from one who was raised and trained in this tradition. \nAs David says\, “Come and listen because in that storytelling there may be one word\, one sentence\, one story that was meant just for you.  And it might answer a question of need that you hadn’t even asked.  That’s the wisdom of this storytelling time.”  Bring your favorite potluck dish (hot or cold) to share.  Also\, please bring your own table setting\, mug and silverware. \nRVUUF will provide paper napkins\, coffee\, tea\, and water.

SUMMARY:Awakening to Humanity’s Sacred Mission
DESCRIPTION:An International Symposium and Call to Action\nFebruary 9-11\, 18\, 2024 \nREGISTER NOW \nThis uniquely inspired online global event is primarily dedicated to hosting the vision of Ervin Laszlo and his powerful call to “Awakening Humanity’s Sacred Mission.” The international Symposium is a collaboration produced by UNITY EARTH in deep partnership with the Source of Synergy Foundation\, Laszlo Institute\, The Holomovement\, Unify\, Light on Light\, SINE Network\, Humanity’s Team\, Good of the Whole and other global organizations. \nThis event stands out due to its unprecedented global collaboration and its core focus on deep engagement. It serves as a worldwide rallying point for Humanity’s Sacred Mission\, emphasizing actionable steps and mass mobilization in transformative movements for the greater good. \n“Awakening to Humanity’s Sacred Mission” is based on the proposition that humanity has a sacred mission\, and that seeking and advancing this shared sacred mission is of urgent and vital interest. The religions and spiritual traditions speak of this mission of humanity\, and claim that we have a sacred or divine obligation to pursue it. \nThe Symposium seeks to uncover key aspects of the sacred mission of humanity\, and to highlight its meaning for our life and future. This global event will also be offering a variety of powerful action invitations to the audience to join together in awakening our shared sacred mission. \nPursuing a sacred mission gives people meaning in life\, helping to overcome pessimism\, inertia and depression. Those who awaken to their sacred mission then become a part of a great wave of consciousness “upshifting” humanity toward our next level of consciousness. \nThe dates February 9-11 are across the Lunar New Year 2024 which will be the beginning of the Year of the Dragon. \nThe Symposium will have two sessions each day for three days (February 9-11)\, to cover all time zones. Both sessions on any single day will cover the same daily theme with a variety of speakers. There is also a Harvest Day with two sessions a week later on February 18th to follow up and follow through for the audience and speakers. \nAttendees/participants are invited to participate in one session each day including the harvest day in order to complete attendance at the Symposium. They are not expected to attend both sessions on any given day but may if they so choose. \nSession 1 times 10 am EDT – 1pm EDT / 4pm CET – 7 CET\nSession 2 times 6pm EDT – 9 pm EDT / 10am AEDT – 1pm AEDT

SUMMARY:FOR Gathering Voices: The Wall Between – What Jews and Palestinians Don't Want to Know About Each Other
DESCRIPTION:FOR invites you to join us next Tuesday\, November 21st for our monthly Gathering Voices event as I speak to Raja Khouri and Jeffrey Wilkinson\, the authors of the groundbreaking new book “The Wall Between: What Jews and Palestinians Don’t Want to Know About Each Other”. The book\, released just a few days before October 7\, offers concrete ways for Jews and Palestinians to speak (and listen) differently to each other — how needed this is right now cannot be overstated. \n“That this book even exists is remarkable\,” raved Peter Beinart. It’s extraordinarily difficult for a Palestinian and a Jew to write a book that fairly conveys the dominant mood in both communities about Palestine – Israel. But this book not only exists – it’s wise\, engaging and deeply humane. It will prove an essential text in bringing diaspora Jews and Palestinians together in the justice movement that this moment demands\,” he stated. \nSince the horrific massacres on October 7\, people have been choosing sides like it’s a football game. But\, it’s not. Lives and the future and safety of all people in Israel/Palestine are the stakes. Right now\, one child in Gaza is dying every ten minutes. The unprecedented vitriol that is manifesting on university campuses and social media isn’t moving us any closer to peace. What is needed instead is reconciliation based on justice and the inherent worth of all people. All of us\, whether Israeli or Palestinian\, Jewish\, Muslim\, or Christian\, are created in the image of G-d. \nThis inspiring book presents Arabs and Jews with the challenge of seeing the “other” as we want them to see us – fully human\, with our hurts\, history\, and hopes for the future\,” said Dr. James Zogby\, president and founder of the Arab American Institute. “It is a pure application of Martin Buber on the importance of forming ‘I-Thou relationships’ because when we recognize the humanity of others\, it enhances our own humanity\, as well.

SUMMARY:Answering the Call: October 15
DESCRIPTION:What work is the universe asking of us at this time? What work is the Earth asking of us at this time? What work are the other species asking of us at this time? What work are the youth asking of us at this time? What work are the future generations of humans asking of us? What work are our hearts asking of us?”  -–Matthew Fox \n  \nWe can discover our own unique contribution to life and to the Earth by listening to what is calling each of us at this moment of “meta-crisis” on the planet. In this daylong we will draw upon teachings and practices from spiritual teachers and psychologists\, share songs and poetry\, and use journaling and discussion to explore how to answer our call to make a positive difference with our life in a way that is deeply fulfilling. As Howard Thurman puts it\, “Ask what makes you come alive then go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” We invite you to join with others around the world to listen and come alive in answer to Earth’s call. \n  \nWorkshop Leaders \nShoshana Alexander\, MA\, is an author\, teacher\, developmental editor\, playwright\, actor\, and mother\, and in all roles has tried to make a positive difference for the Earth. She is the author of several books\, including In Praise of Single Parents and Women’s Ventures/Women’s Visions\, and is co-author of Awakening Joy with James Baraz. Shoshana has guided numerous books into print in the areas of Buddhism\, psychology\, and spirituality\, includingThe Findhorn Garden\, Radical Acceptance (Tara Brach)\, Faith and LovingKindness (Sharon Salzberg)\, and Bouncing Back (Linda Graham). She has taught high school and university courses in the humanities\, and created a number of performance pieces\, including a full-length play\, “Taking Our Life\,” which highlights ecocide and humanity’s imperative to choose life. This “Answering the Call” daylong is based on her previous in-person workshop offered in Ashland\, Oregon\, where she lives. In early 2024\, she is offering a three-month course on-line to further explore how we can answer the call of the Earth at this time. \nJames Baraz has been a meditation teacher since 1978 and leads retreats\, workshops and classes in the U.S and abroad. He is the creator and teacher of the online Awakening Joy course\, since 2003. He’s also a co-founding teacher of Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre\, California\, where he started the Family Program and the Community Dharma Leader Program. In recent years\, he has also focused on dharma and climate change\, and serves as a guiding teacher to One Earth Sangha\, a Virtual EcoCenter devoted to Buddhist responses to climate change. His books include Awakening Joy with Shoshana Alexander\, and Awakening Joy for Kids with Michele Lilyanna. He loves mentoring and bringing out the best in others.

SUMMARY:CULTIVATING WISDOM THROUGH HEALING ENGAGEMENT
DESCRIPTION:This event is Hosted by Nichol Chase and Notable Guests from the Lotus Institute. \nIs wisdom an immutable essence that only some possess\, or can it be cultivated? \nIn this online series\, Nichol Chase will engage in deep and meaningful conversations about cultivating wisdom through healing trauma\, self-mastery\, and building meaningful relationships. Dr. Daniel Siegel will join Nichol to discuss mindfulness through the lens of Interpersonal Neurobiology. Mahshid Hager\, LCSW\, will join to discuss movement through the lens of Somatic Experiencing. And Tracy Stackhouse will join to discuss music through the lens of the Polyvagal Theory. \nThroughout millennia\, some have described desirable human characteristics or gifts as immutable essences that are hard to train and require innate potential. In spite of this\, empirical research has revealed that expert abilities\, gifts or even wisdom are greatly influenced by the environment – which suggests that leaders are not born\, they are also made. In the paper Wisdom and how to cultivate it\, Igor Grossman suggests\, “The emerging evidence begins to suggest that from a constructivist point of view\, the potential for wise thinking emerged in the interaction of the person and their environment. It is up to us to realize this potential through the ways we view the self\, the situation\, and the world around us.”\nThroughout the series\, Nichol will talk about the Wisdom Building Method framework she developed during her time as a Garrison Institute Fellow. It draws upon the scientific disciplines of Interpersonal Neurobiology\, Somatic Experiencing and the Polyvagal Theory to inspire healing engagement through practice. \nTIMING\nAll sessions will run from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET\nFriday August 4\nTuesday August 8\nFriday August 11\nThe Zoom link will be emailed to you within 24 hours of signup.

SUMMARY:The Alchemy of Release: A Retreat
DESCRIPTION:The Lotus Institute will host The Alchemy of Release: A retreat on grounding and letting go September 23-25 on Zoom. \nThich Nhat Hanoh defined nirvana as letting go. Grounding ourselves in the present moment\, we can learn to relax into letting go and become more available to life. \n\n\n\n\n\n“Letting go gives us freedom\, and freedom is the only condition for happiness. If\, in our heart\, we still cling to anything—anger\, anxiety\, or possession—we cannot be free.”— Thich Nhat Hanh\n\n\n\n\nDuring this 3-day online retreat\, Dharma Teachers Sister Peace\, Ava Avalos\, Joe Reilly and Peggy Rowe-Ward will explore the embodied practice of letting go. Ava Avalos will offer mindful movement through dance and restorative yoga. Joe Reilly brings the gift of ritual and music. Sister Peace will share stories and walking meditation. Peggy Rowe-Ward offers teachings and experiential exercises that help us return to our wise hearts and practice letting go like a river. \n\nLearn more and register here

SUMMARY:Building a Magical Toolbox
DESCRIPTION:Join Starhawk in her new session of Magical Activism for 2022 beginning July 20. \nDeepen your political activism and magical skills to focus collective power towards challenging and shifting unjust power structures. \n\n\n\n\n\nRight now\, we need tools to counter the manipulative magic that fragments our attention and sways our emotions—from clickbait on the internet to disinformation on Fox News. Lies scream\, while truth whispers. Anxiety\, outrage\, grievance and fear are amplified until they turn into outright hatred. \nBut we can use our magical and practical tools to change this\, to drain away the toxicity and amplify truth and compassion. And those same tools can build community and help each one of us stay grounded\, energized and hopeful through troubled times. \nTo use the full range of our tools to shift collective consciousness\, we’ll provide resources for taking practical action—that’s how we ground the magic and intensify its impact. \nJoin Starhawk in a new session of Magical Activism for 2022 as we upgrade our magical toolboxes together\, and learn how to use everything in them! \nDeep Political Activism\nI’ve always loved Dion Fortune’s definition of magic: “the art of changing consciousness at will.” It’s always seemed to me to be a perfect definition of deep political activism: not just challenging unjust power\, but shifting the consciousness that accepts injustice. \nTo enact this deep work\, we’ll meet live online roughly every three weeks from mid-July through November (schedule below). Each session will focus on an issue relevant to the moment\, and each will incorporate a specific magical skill. You’ll have ‘homework’—ways to continue the magic between sessions. \nWith crucial midterm elections coming up for the United States in November\, our work will have a U.S. focus—but the tools and skills will be relevant wherever you are. \nWhile we’ll respond to the events of the moment\, here are some of the issues we are likely to cover: \n\n\n\nDefending Democracy\nReproductive Rights and Gender Justice\nRacial Justice\nClimate Change\nCountering Disinformation\nElection magic\nPeace\n\n\n\n  \nHow Magical Activism Works\nThis is a 4-month series that runs between July 2022-November 2022. It’s a live\, cohort-based course which means it centers on our live rituals hosted on Zoom on Wednesdays roughly every 3 weeks. It also means that everyone in the course is joining in live too\, and learning and working together and organizing on the same timeline. \nEach session will focus on a different activist cause. We will do a ritual to add magic to the cause\, then commit to taking solid action towards that cause. \nOnce you register (by donation)\, you’ll be invited via email to our private online learning community where you will be able to access upcoming live links and past recordings\, connect with other magical activists between sessions\, share ideas\, respectfully debate\, and organize. \nEach session includes: a live (or recorded live) ritual teaching session\, some deep personal and community healing work within a ritual framework\, and suggested personal practices (“homework”) to take action in the weeks between sessions. \nEach session will be recorded\, so if you miss one\, you can watch at your leisure. All the links to past sessions will be stored in our private Magical Activism course community. \nAll of our sessions will include live closed captioning and ASL interpretation \nYour Commitment\nBy registering for this series\, you are committing to one 90-minute live session every 3 weeks for the next 4 months. If you can’t join us live\, you can watch the recordings at your convenience. \nWe are asking that you commit additionally to at least an hour of your time for each session to practical\, real-world work on an issue. \nThis might mean making calls for a candidate\, showing up for a demonstration or organizing one\, writing your representatives\, donating money to an organization or a campaign\, writing your own posts on the internet and/or amplifying others\, a project or creative work of your own. \nOf course\, I would never ask you to do anything that goes against your personal values or violates your sense of integrity. \nFirst Live Session\nWednesday July 20th | 5:30pm Pacific Time \nSeries Schedule\nThis is our tentative schedule—of course\, subject matter may shift in response to current events\, and we have been known to add bonus/emergency sessions at times when needed. More details on each session will be released before the course begins. \nSession 1 | Wednesday\, July 20th \nSession 2 | Wednesday\, August 10th \nSession 3 | Wednesday\, August 31st \nSession 4 | Wednesday\, September 21st \nSession 5 | Wednesday\, October 12th \nSession 6 | Wednesday\, November 2nd \nSession 7 | Wednesday November 9th or 16th (TBD) \n  \nThis Course is Open to Anyone Who Wants to Learn These Skills and Tools.\nMy own political perspective is progressive to radical. I’ve had a lifelong commitment to social justice in all its forms\, to non-violence\, feminism\, environmental balance and justice\, and undoing all the structures of oppression. \nWe offer this course by donation because we want all who are called to this work to be able to access it. Donate what feels comfortable for you\, and share this course with all who may be called to this work! \nI strongly believe that what we need now is a powerful\, welcoming movement for justice in all its forms\, one that is truly inclusive of all people\, and that generates energy\, enthusiasm and joy even in the midst of struggle.

SUMMARY:The Beginning and the End of America
DESCRIPTION:In this moment of upheaval\, it is evident that our past – one of colonialism\, enslavement and oppressive patriarchy – is alive in the present. The nonduality of our circumstances is also clear. With an organic understanding of collapse\, not an industrial one\, we start to see the old is providing fertilizer for the new. \nIn this talk\, Dr. Ward will explore how we have confused change for transformation. \nTransformation is at the base; change happens at the surface. Dr. Ward will share practices that cultivate individual transformation and help us create\, as Margaret Wheatley describes it\, islands of sanity. SUMMARY:Poor People's Assembly: Moral March on Washington
DESCRIPTION:The Mass Poor People’s & Low-Wage Workers’ Assembly & Moral March on Washington and to the Polls on June 18\, 2022 will be a generationally-transformative declaration of the power of poor and low-wealth people and our moral allies to say that this system is killing ALL of us and we can’t…we won’t… \nWhy We March: \nWe Assemble and March on June 18\, 2022 because any nation that ignores nearly half of its citizens is in a moral\, economic and political crisis. There were 140 million people who were poor or one emergency away from economic ruin before the pandemic. Since March 2020\, while hundreds of thousands of people have died\, millions are on the edge of hunger and eviction\, and still without health care or living wages\, billionaire wealth has grown by over $2 trillion. \nSign Up to Learn More

SUMMARY:Generating Bodhicitta Retreat: the Dance of the Windhorse
DESCRIPTION:The Lotus Institute invites you to join them next weekend for an online retreat with Ava Avalos\, Joe Reilly\, Sister Peace and Peggy Rowe-Ward. It is here in all of life – never marred and completely whole. \nWe are gathering during Earth Day weekend and at a time of war to embrace what is arising\, to come back to ourselves and to “sit together in this love on the path.” With word\, sound\, movement and story\, we will explore and activate bodhicitta for the benefit of all sentient beings. SUMMARY:MLK 55 Years Later — Can the Church Study War No More?
DESCRIPTION:April 2\, 2022 Riverside Church\, NYC (and online) \nRe-examining the links between militarism and racism  \nCan America learn to “study war no more”? \nJoin the event virtually or in person on April 2nd to mark the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “Beyond Vietnam” speech in the place where he delivered it 55 years ago – the historic Riverside Church. \nAt a time when the justness and necessity of the Vietnam War was still broadly accepted\, Dr. King issued a stirring rebuke to the U.S. establishment\, naming his own government as “the greatest purveyor of violence in the world.” \nWe will explore the connections Dr. King made in that speech between the “three evils” of militarism\, racism\, and poverty and their impact on Black lives a half century later. We’ll look at the road from Iraq to Ferguson and talk about how the Church and the American people can overcome the forces of war and violence to build a more peaceful and just nation and planet. \nJoin us for: \n\nMusical performances\nAn inspiring reading of the “Beyond Vietnam” speech by national faith leaders and activists\nA conversation with leading voices from the American church and anti-militarism movements on forging a new path\n\nThe event will take place on Saturday\, April 2 from 3:30 to 6 pm ET. \nRSVP and receive updates of confirmed guests\, performers and panelists as they become available! \nREGISTER FOR EVENT

SUMMARY:Lotus Institute: Heart Sutra Workshop
DESCRIPTION:From the Lotus Institute \nThe Insight That Brings Us To The Other Shore is a gift from our beloved teacher\, Thich Nhat Hanh\, and those who came before him. Thich Nhat Hanh has called the Heart Sutra “the highest vision of the Buddha.” Chanting The Insight That Brings Us To The Other Shore\, Nhat Hanh’s new translation\, can awaken the teacher in us\, the one who shows us the way to our own awakened nature. \nDharma teacher and musician Brian Kimmel (Bk) with Dharma teacher\, Peggy Rowe Ward\, will lead us on a journey of learning with and chanting from The Heart Sutra. In this workshop\, we will: \n\nChant the Insight That Brings Us To The Other Shore\nShare tips on learning the chant and practicing it for ourselves and with our sanghas\nPractice with our aspirations as a means to help bring this teaching into our daily life and where it is needed in the world.\n\nWhen Thich Nhat Hanh completed this translation at 3am in the morning\, a moon ray penetrated his room. Let’s come together to experience the clear light of the moon\, and the deep abiding wisdom of this Sutra and our teacher. \nPlease know: you are welcome. Even if you don’t think you have a voice\, even if you think you can’t chant\, sing\, or carry a tune – your heart can. We hope you will join us.
