DESCRIPTION:On March 20\, 2023\, Yuval Dag refused his military conscription and was sent by an Israeli military court to prison. \nAfter growing up with a nationalist identity\, Yuval began to question his privilege and how it was maintained through the oppression of Palestinians. “Resistance begins\, first of all\, with self-reflection and understanding. With the understanding that by wearing a uniform and symbols of a certain body\, you choose to represent that body. With the understanding that enlisting in the army is a political choice\, and its meaning is to support the military and political agenda\, and to take part in it. The understanding that even a small cog contributes to the system’s function.” \nYuval decided that he could not in good conscientious accept his military conscription. DESCRIPTION:On Monday January 15\, join community members for Southern Oregon’s Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.\, Holiday Celebration from noon to 1:30 p.m.\, at the Historic Ashland Armory in downtown Ashland. The event is free and open to the public. \nCome celebrate Dr. King’s legacy and our diverse and vibrant community. Seating is limited and available on a first come basis. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. This is a family event and all ages are welcome. Admission is free\, but donations are welcome. We encourage everyone to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to the SOU Food Pantry. The event is sign-language interpreted. \nFor those who cannot attend\, the event will be live-streamed here on somlk.org and on RVTV’s YouTube channel. \nThis year\, the celebration’s theme is “We Choose Love! Now more than ever\, the DREAM must continue.” \nThis year’s Keynote speech will be delivered by historian\, educator\, and longtime host\, D.L. Richardson. \nThe celebration will include messages from faith leaders in the valley\, and performances by the Ashland School District Middle School Choir\, the Rogue Valley Peace Choir\, BASE Youth Dancers\, spoken word from area students\, and The Friends of Bishop Mayfield Band who will perform a tribute to the beloved local blues legend. DESCRIPTION:We at Jewish Voice for Peace are deeply saddened and horrified by the cruelty and disregard for human life shown by Hamas in their attack on Israel. There can be no justification for their actions. Neither is there justification for Israel’s relentless and indiscriminate bombing of 2 million Palestinians. We call for an immediate  cessation of hostilities\, the release of all hostages\, and the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza. \nIn the midst of this situation\, we are showing a film at the VarsityTheatre that challenges the equation that loving Judaism means unquestioning support of Israeli foreign policy. It questions the proposition that criticizing Israel is somehow anti-Semitic. It is precisely because we love both Judaism and Israel that we feel it is so important to challenge the policies of both Israel and the United States that have brought us to this tragic moment. \nThe film ‘ISRAELISM’ will be shown at the Varsity Theatre October 27th at 4:00 p.m. \nTen years in the making\, this award winning documentary follows two young American Jews with strong emotional attachments to Israel and how their attitudes and beliefs begin to transform as they spend time In Israel and Palestine. They witness the harsh conditions in the West Bank under Israeli occupation and begin to challenge Israel to follow the Jewish ethics and values they hold dear. \nFollowing the film\, there will be a Q&A with one of the filmmakers. Soldiers who rappelled down to the deck from helicopter gunships killed nine men and wounded numerous others.
