There can be no justification for their actions. Neither is there justification for Israel’s relentless and indiscriminate bombing of 2 million Palestinians. We call for an immediate  cessation of hostilities\, the release of all hostages\, and the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza. \nIn the midst of this situation\, we are showing a film at the VarsityTheatre that challenges the equation that loving Judaism means unquestioning support of Israeli foreign policy. It questions the proposition that criticizing Israel is somehow anti-Semitic. It is precisely because we love both Judaism and Israel that we feel it is so important to challenge the policies of both Israel and the United States that have brought us to this tragic moment. \nThe film ‘ISRAELISM’ will be shown at the Varsity Theatre October 27th at 4:00 p.m. \nTen years in the making\, this award winning documentary follows two young American Jews with strong emotional attachments to Israel and how their attitudes and beliefs begin to transform as they spend time In Israel and Palestine. Dr. Daniel Siegel will join Nichol to discuss mindfulness through the lens of Interpersonal Neurobiology. Mahshid Hager\, LCSW\, will join to discuss movement through the lens of Somatic Experiencing. And Tracy Stackhouse will join to discuss music through the lens of the Polyvagal Theory. \nThroughout millennia\, some have described desirable human characteristics or gifts as immutable essences that are hard to train and require innate potential. In spite of this\, empirical research has revealed that expert abilities\, gifts or even wisdom are greatly influenced by the environment – which suggests that leaders are not born\, they are also made. In the paper Wisdom and how to cultivate it\, Igor Grossman suggests\, “The emerging evidence begins to suggest that from a constructivist point of view\, the potential for wise thinking emerged in the interaction of the person and their environment. DESCRIPTION:Please join the #nowaytotreatachild campaign co-leaders from Defense for Children International – Palestine and American Friends Service Committee for a webinar on July 25 at 12 p.m. Eastern / 9 a.m. Pacific / 5 p.m. BST.  \nPalestinian rights organizers\, activists\, and advocates across the United States have been busy working to advance the Palestinian Children and Families Act\, H.R. 3103\, which aims to prohibit Israel from using U.S. taxpayer funds to detain and torture Palestinian children\, demolish or seize Palestinian homes and property\, and further annex the occupied West Bank. During this webinar\, several special guests will share their experiences advocating for Palestinian rights in the U.S. and share tips for how you can make progress with your elected officials. \nBackground \nApproximately 2.9 million Palestinians live in the occupied West Bank\, of which around 45 percent are children under the age of 18. \nPalestinian children in the West Bank\, like adults\, face arrest\, prosecution\, and imprisonment under an Israeli military detention system that denies them basic rights. \nSince 1967\, Israel has operated two separate legal systems in the same territory. In the occupied West Bank\, Israeli settlers are subject to the civilian and criminal legal system whereas Palestinians live under military law. \nIsrael applies civilian criminal law to Palestinian children in East Jerusalem. No Israeli child comes into contact with the military courts. \nIsrael has the dubious distinction of being the only country in the world that automatically and systematically prosecutes children in military courts that lack fundamental fair trial rights and protections. Israel prosecutes between 500 and 700 Palestinian children in military courts each year. \nIll-treatment in the Israeli military detention system remains “widespread\, systematic\, and institutionalized throughout the process\,” according to the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) report Children in Israeli Military Detention Observations and Recommendations. \nChildren typically arrive to interrogation bound\, blindfolded\, frightened\, and sleep deprived. \nChildren often give confessions after verbal abuse\, threats\, physical and psychological violence that in some cases amounts to torture. \nIsraeli military law provides no right to legal counsel during interrogation\, and Israeli military court judges seldom exclude confessions obtained by coercion or torture. \nABOUT #NOWAYTOTREATACHILD’S WEBINARS AND ZOOM:\nFor this webinar\, we will be using the Zoom platform. DESCRIPTION:The music and magic of Peace Village Festival is back! After a 6 year hiatus we are rebirthing and reimagining Peace Village. While retaining the great musical lineup\, including late night electronic dance parties\, we are opting for a more unitfied gathering\, with one music stage\, group participation song circles with some of our musicians\, yoga\, cacao ceremonies\, and a few choice workshops. One of the largest Summer Music\, Arts\, and Wellness Festivals in Southern Oregon\, Peace Village takes place on June 23-25 at Jackson Wellsprings Hot Mineral Springs Resort in Ashland\, Oregon\, from 6pm to 2:30am on Friday\, 11am to 2:30am on Saturday\, & 11am to 11pm Sunday. This year’s event builds upon our tradition of high quality music with another amazing lineup. \nFeaturing a local and national lineup of world renowned and beloved musicians\, the festival offers both familiar and new music in a variety of genres. Friday\, June 23rd features 2 amazing singer song writers in Windsong Martin and Alice Di Micele and their stellar bands. Saturday showcases the beautiful voice and songs of Tina Malia\, who will be playing her first concert in the are in several years\, along with the hypnotic sounds of Freedom Tribe\, which feature the soul stirring songs of Freedom and virtuoso guitarist Al Torre. Saturday will also feature  the acoustic\, sweet sounds of Sasha Rose and the incredibly talented Max Ribner. Sunday winds up with some really special treats\, including the world music of Shimshai\, the esteemed Jah Levi and his ensemble\, African Kora player extraordinaire Youssoupha Sidibe\, and opens with fan favorite Sara Tone. DJs for the late night dances Friday and Saturday nights  To Be Announced. \nFor one weekend in June\, Jackson Wellsprings transcends time and space to become a Peace Village\, going beyond ordinary realms to create a unique village setting of peace and community. The panel discussions will also be recorded if you can’t join us live.\n\nLearn More at World Beyond War’s Film Festival page. \nDay 1: Discussion of “A Force More Powerful” \nA Force More Powerful is a documentary series on one of the 20th century’s most important and least-known stories: how nonviolent power overcame oppression and authoritarian rule. It includes case studies of movements\, and each case is approximately 30 minutes long. We’ll watch Episode 1\, which contains 3 case studies: \n\nIn India in the 1930s\, after Gandhi had returned from South Africa\, he and his followers adopted a strategy of refusing to cooperate with British rule. Through civil disobedience and boycotts\, they successfully loosened their oppressors’ grip on power and set India on the path to freedom.\nIn the 1960s\, Gandhi’s nonviolent weapons were taken up by black college students in Nashville\, Tennessee. Disciplined and strictly nonviolent\, they successfully desegregated Nashville’s downtown lunch counters in five months\, becoming a model for the entire civil rights movement.\nIn 1985\, a young South African named Mkhuseli Jack led a movement against the legalized discrimination known as apartheid. Their campaign of nonviolent mass action\, and a powerful consumer boycott in the Eastern Cape province\, awakened whites to black grievances and fatally weakened business support for apartheid.

DESCRIPTION:Join Peace House and Ashland’s Peace Church (UCC) March 7 in welcoming George Lakey to Ashland. George is a veteran nonviolent activist\, trainer\, and author. He will be reading and sharing stories from his new book\, “Dancing with History: a life for peace and justice.” George will be speaking at 2 p.m. at Peace House and at 7 p.m. at UCC (717 Siskiyou Blvd.) in Ashland. \nGeorge Lakey’s first arrest was for a sit-in during a civil rights campaign in 1963\, while he was studying at the University of Pennsylvania. Previously he’d been active in demonstrations with the Congress of Racial Equality. With Martin Oppenheimer he wrote A Manual for Direct Action (1964) for the civil rights movement. The daughter of Martin Luther King\, Rev. Dr. Bernice A. King\, later described that book as “literally a lifesaver for many during the height of the struggle for black freedom and dignity.” \nIn 1964 he joined the training staff for Mississippi Freedom Summer\, in which nearly a thousand students from the North went to Mississippi to lead Freedom Schools and do voter registration. After helping design an activist curriculum with civil rights leaders Bayard Rustin\, James Farmer and others\, he taught at the Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, School of Social Change\, assisting young civil rights workers from the front lines to develop further their leadership skills. \nAfter taking advanced studies in sociology at Penn\, Lakey wrote a series of articles and books on the theory and strategy of nonviolent struggle. He taught at Haverford College and the University of Pennsylvania. In 1990 he co-founded Training for Change. He has led over 1500 workshops on five continents\, including work with the African National Congress and in the civil rights movements of Zimbabwe\, Taiwan\, and Myanmar. \nHe has also been an activist in other social movements in the U.S.: anti-Vietnam war\, gay liberation\, Men Against Patriarchy\, Jobs with Peace (a labor coalition)\, and climate justice. \n“Peace Educator of the Year\, 2010” \nIn 2006 Swarthmore College invited him to become Eugene M. Lang Visiting Professor for Issues in Social Change\, where he created an on-line database of over 1000 cases of nonviolent campaigns in nearly 200 countries\, including dozens of campaigns from the classic period of the U.S. civil rights movement\, 1955-68. Swarthmore will be using his memoir as a course-assigned book. \nHe has lectured at Harvard\, Stanford\, Oxford\, Thailand’s Thommasat University\, and many other colleges and universities\, including as a popular speaker for the annual day remembering Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.

DESCRIPTION:Join with the community to witness and show support for Justice for Aidan Ellison at the trial of the accused.  Supporters will gather at the Ashland Plaza in Ashland at 3:30 p.m. the first day of the trial Mon\, Feb 27. \nRobert Keggan\, a 49-year-old Talent man\, is scheduled for a 14-day trial beginning Feb. 27\, for the killing of 19-year-old Aidan Ellison outside the Stratford Inn. Keegan is going on trial for second degree murder. \nAidan was from Ashland and his beautiful life was taken away from him before it began (see attached photo). Let us all stand together in solidarity asking JUSTICE for Aidan at the Medford Courthouse. \nSHOW UP AT THE Ashland Plaza at 3:30 p.m.\n \n\n      Dress warmly as we will be outdoors.\n      Bring signs if you desire.

Join Veterans for Peace for a two-hour workshop on organizing creative and dynamic direct actions to meaningfully challenge the war machine and create space for a more just and peaceful future. \nThis workshop is the first in a series of workshops on creative direct action. DESCRIPTION:Frank Romano\, who was released from jail in Jerusalem in 2018 and deported for his activist work\, will speak in Ashland Monday\, Nov. 14\, from 7-8 pm at Bloomsbury Books in Ashland. \nThe author will give a free signed copy of his book to the first five people who arrive to the event. \nLove and Terror in the Middle East\, 5th Ed. dramatically captures the author’s efforts to promote understanding and cooperation between Jews\, Muslims and Christians in Palestine and Israel. \nThis 5th Edition includes a new chapter (Epilogue 1) about his recent experiences\, in September 2018\, trying to defend a Bedouin village “Khan al-Ahmar” in the West Bank. To prevent its destruction by Israeli forces\, he and other activists stepped in front of a bulldozer. He was subsequently arrested\, imprisoned in Jerusalem and then deported to France. \nRomano\, born in Oregon\, is an actor\, a retired professor at the University of Paris and a member of the California and French Bars. \nFree Food and other Refreshments provided by Food Angels. \n
