Soldiers who rappelled down to the deck from helicopter gunships killed nine men and wounded numerous others. DESCRIPTION:This event is Hosted by Nichol Chase and Notable Guests from the Lotus Institute. \nIs wisdom an immutable essence that only some possess\, or can it be cultivated? \nIn this online series\, Nichol Chase will engage in deep and meaningful conversations about cultivating wisdom through healing trauma\, self-mastery\, and building meaningful relationships. Dr. Daniel Siegel will join Nichol to discuss mindfulness through the lens of Interpersonal Neurobiology. Mahshid Hager\, LCSW\, will join to discuss movement through the lens of Somatic Experiencing. And Tracy Stackhouse will join to discuss music through the lens of the Polyvagal Theory. \nThroughout millennia\, some have described desirable human characteristics or gifts as immutable essences that are hard to train and require innate potential. In spite of this\, empirical research has revealed that expert abilities\, gifts or even wisdom are greatly influenced by the environment – which suggests that leaders are not born\, they are also made. In the paper Wisdom and how to cultivate it\, Igor Grossman suggests\, “The emerging evidence begins to suggest that from a constructivist point of view\, the potential for wise thinking emerged in the interaction of the person and their environment. It is up to us to realize this potential through the ways we view the self\, the situation\, and the world around us.”\nThroughout the series\, Nichol will talk about the Wisdom Building Method framework she developed during her time as a Garrison Institute Fellow. DESCRIPTION:Please join the #nowaytotreatachild campaign co-leaders from Defense for Children International – Palestine and American Friends Service Committee for a webinar on July 25 at 12 p.m. Eastern / 9 a.m. Pacific / 5 p.m. BST.  \nPalestinian rights organizers\, activists\, and advocates across the United States have been busy working to advance the Palestinian Children and Families Act\, H.R. 3103\, which aims to prohibit Israel from using U.S. taxpayer funds to detain and torture Palestinian children\, demolish or seize Palestinian homes and property\, and further annex the occupied West Bank. During this webinar\, several special guests will share their experiences advocating for Palestinian rights in the U.S. and share tips for how you can make progress with your elected officials. \nBackground \nApproximately 2.9 million Palestinians live in the occupied West Bank\, of which around 45 percent are children under the age of 18. \nPalestinian children in the West Bank\, like adults\, face arrest\, prosecution\, and imprisonment under an Israeli military detention system that denies them basic rights. \nSince 1967\, Israel has operated two separate legal systems in the same territory. In the occupied West Bank\, Israeli settlers are subject to the civilian and criminal legal system whereas Palestinians live under military law. \nIsrael applies civilian criminal law to Palestinian children in East Jerusalem. No Israeli child comes into contact with the military courts. \nIsrael has the dubious distinction of being the only country in the world that automatically and systematically prosecutes children in military courts that lack fundamental fair trial rights and protections. Israel prosecutes between 500 and 700 Palestinian children in military courts each year. \nIll-treatment in the Israeli military detention system remains “widespread\, systematic\, and institutionalized throughout the process\,” according to the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) report Children in Israeli Military Detention Observations and Recommendations. \nChildren typically arrive to interrogation bound\, blindfolded\, frightened\, and sleep deprived. \nChildren often give confessions after verbal abuse\, threats\, physical and psychological violence that in some cases amounts to torture. \nIsraeli military law provides no right to legal counsel during interrogation\, and Israeli military court judges seldom exclude confessions obtained by coercion or torture. \nABOUT #NOWAYTOTREATACHILD’S WEBINARS AND ZOOM:\nFor this webinar\, we will be using the Zoom platform. This year’s event builds upon our tradition of high quality music with another amazing lineup. \nFeaturing a local and national lineup of world renowned and beloved musicians\, the festival offers both familiar and new music in a variety of genres. Friday\, June 23rd features 2 amazing singer song writers in Windsong Martin and Alice Di Micele and their stellar bands. It includes case studies of movements\, and each case is approximately 30 minutes long. We’ll watch Episode 1\, which contains 3 case studies: \n\nIn India in the 1930s\, after Gandhi had returned from South Africa\, he and his followers adopted a strategy of refusing to cooperate with British rule. Through civil disobedience and boycotts\, they successfully loosened their oppressors’ grip on power and set India on the path to freedom.\nIn the 1960s\, Gandhi’s nonviolent weapons were taken up by black college students in Nashville\, Tennessee. Disciplined and strictly nonviolent\, they successfully desegregated Nashville’s downtown lunch counters in five months\, becoming a model for the entire civil rights movement.\nIn 1985\, a young South African named Mkhuseli Jack led a movement against the legalized discrimination known as apartheid. Their campaign of nonviolent mass action\, and a powerful consumer boycott in the Eastern Cape province\, awakened whites to black grievances and fatally weakened business support for apartheid.

DESCRIPTION:Join Peace House and Ashland’s Peace Church (UCC) March 7 in welcoming George Lakey to Ashland. George is a veteran nonviolent activist\, trainer\, and author. He will be reading and sharing stories from his new book\, “Dancing with History: a life for peace and justice.” George will be speaking at 2 p.m. at Peace House and at 7 p.m. at UCC (717 Siskiyou Blvd.) in Ashland. \nGeorge Lakey’s first arrest was for a sit-in during a civil rights campaign in 1963\, while he was studying at the University of Pennsylvania. Previously he’d been active in demonstrations with the Congress of Racial Equality. With Martin Oppenheimer he wrote A Manual for Direct Action (1964) for the civil rights movement. The daughter of Martin Luther King\, Rev. Dr. Bernice A. King\, later described that book as “literally a lifesaver for many during the height of the struggle for black freedom and dignity.” \nIn 1964 he joined the training staff for Mississippi Freedom Summer\, in which nearly a thousand students from the North went to Mississippi to lead Freedom Schools and do voter registration. After helping design an activist curriculum with civil rights leaders Bayard Rustin\, James Farmer and others\, he taught at the Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, School of Social Change\, assisting young civil rights workers from the front lines to develop further their leadership skills. \nAfter taking advanced studies in sociology at Penn\, Lakey wrote a series of articles and books on the theory and strategy of nonviolent struggle. He taught at Haverford College and the University of Pennsylvania. In 1990 he co-founded Training for Change. He has led over 1500 workshops on five continents\, including work with the African National Congress and in the civil rights movements of Zimbabwe\, Taiwan\, and Myanmar. \nHe has also been an activist in other social movements in the U.S.: anti-Vietnam war\, gay liberation\, Men Against Patriarchy\, Jobs with Peace (a labor coalition)\, and climate justice. \n“Peace Educator of the Year\, 2010” \nIn 2006 Swarthmore College invited him to become Eugene M. Lang Visiting Professor for Issues in Social Change\, where he created an on-line database of over 1000 cases of nonviolent campaigns in nearly 200 countries\, including dozens of campaigns from the classic period of the U.S. civil rights movement\, 1955-68. Swarthmore will be using his memoir as a course-assigned book. \nHe has lectured at Harvard\, Stanford\, Oxford\, Thailand’s Thommasat University\, and many other colleges and universities\, including as a popular speaker for the annual day remembering Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.

SUMMARY:Nuclear Age Peace Foundation: Speech and Spirit
DESCRIPTION:Nuclear Age Peace Foundation presents Speech and Spirit\, an evening about the transmission of political conviction and ecological consciousness across generations. This multi-genre collaboration sits at the intersection of literary studies\, Black and Indigenous performance art\, and the pursuit of collective transcendence. The event emerges from a set of conversations between old friends about how best to honor the traditions they love and study. It will feature live music\, song\, and poetry. \nThis event is a multi-genre collaboration with Joshua Bennett\, Samora Pinderhughes\, and Matthew Spellberg on Tuesday\, December 7th from 4:00 – 5:30 pm. \nABOUT THE PARTICIPANTS: \nJoshua Bennett is a Professor of English and Creative Writing at Dartmouth College. Earlier this year\, he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship and the Whiting Award for Poetry and Nonfiction. \nSamora Pinderhughes is a jazz vocalist and keyboardist. Samora was named the first ever Art for Justice/Soros Justice Fellow in 2018. \nMattthew Spellberg is a scholar and writer and the creator of the Dream Parliament. SUMMARY:5 Weeks: Introduction to Nonviolence Online Community Course
DESCRIPTION:Every Thursday at 1pm Pacific from April 22th through May 20\, 2021. \nThis online course is a basic introduction to principled and strategic nonviolence using Pace e Bene’s Engaging Nonviolence Manual. It is intended to provide an opportunity to build community while studying nonviolence. Participants will connect with up to 50 people who share their interests in discovering the many dimensions of active nonviolence. Using small and large groups\, facilitators Veronica Pelicaric and Rivera Sun will guide the participants through explorations into the personal\, interpersonal\, and social justice aspects of nonviolence. This Community Course is designed to be accessible\, fun\, friendly\, and fearless. Using an online platform\, participants can engage with this exciting field from the comforts of their home. The course will familiarize participants with the overall contents of the Engaging Nonviolence study program which will serve to foster personal growth\, healthy relationships and work for world peace.Weekly Themes: \nWeek 1: Understanding Nonviolence; Unpacking Violence \nWeek 2: Exploring Nonviolence: Going Deeper \nWeek 3: Conflict & Community: Using Nonviolence In Our Lives \nWeek 4: Nonviolence\, Emotions\, & Inner Awareness \nWeek 5: Principles of Nonviolence: Gandhi\, King\, and Beyond! \nWeek 6: Building a Culture of Nonviolence: Why We Need Nonviolence In Our World \nRequirements: All participants need to purchase the Engaging Nonviolence Manual. It can be bought on Amazon or directly from Pace e Bene.
