It includes case studies of movements\, and each case is approximately 30 minutes long. We’ll watch Episode 1\, which contains 3 case studies: \n\nIn India in the 1930s\, after Gandhi had returned from South Africa\, he and his followers adopted a strategy of refusing to cooperate with British rule. Through civil disobedience and boycotts\, they successfully loosened their oppressors’ grip on power and set India on the path to freedom.\nIn the 1960s\, Gandhi’s nonviolent weapons were taken up by black college students in Nashville\, Tennessee. Disciplined and strictly nonviolent\, they successfully desegregated Nashville’s downtown lunch counters in five months\, becoming a model for the entire civil rights movement.\nIn 1985\, a young South African named Mkhuseli Jack led a movement against the legalized discrimination known as apartheid. Their campaign of nonviolent mass action\, and a powerful consumer boycott in the Eastern Cape province\, awakened whites to black grievances and fatally weakened business support for apartheid.

Central Ave. \nChristopher Briscoe is perhaps the Rogue Valley’s finest professional photographer. He regularly travels the world\, taking amazing pictures of people & landscapes. Last year\, he took his cameras to Ukraine. Next Monday evening he’ll show us the best of those photos as our guest speaker at our February monthly meeting. We’ll have his program first and then have our usual potluck dinner and short business meeting afterward. We’ll meet in the Adams Room of the Medford Library at 5:30 pm. Peace-loving members of the public are invited to join us. This is a free event.

Imani Umoja\, based in Guinea Bissau\, serves on the Steering Committee of Black Alliance for Peace’s U.S. Out of Africa Network\, and is a Central Committee member of both the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC) and the All-African People’s Revolutionary Party (A-APRP). \nAnn Wright\, representing WILPF US\, spent thirteen years in the U.S. Army and sixteen additional years in the Army Reserves\, retiring as a Colonel. In 1987\, Col. Wright joined the Foreign Service and served as U.S. Deputy Ambassador in Sierra Leone\, Micronesia\, Afghanistan\, and Mongolia. She received the State Department’s Award for Heroism for her actions during the evacuation of 2\,500 people from the civil war in Sierra Leone\, at the time the largest evacuation since Saigon. SUMMARY:Presentation: Medical Response Teams in Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:Since shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine earlier this year\, the Tigard-based humanitarian relief agency Medical Teams International (MTI) has been on the ground responding to the crisis. As Russia’s aggression continues to cause mass migration\, loss of life\, and destruction\, Medical Teams International continues to provide needed supplies and medical care to refugees crossing into Moldova and to the injured and ill within Ukraine. As Martha Newsome\, President & CEO of MTI recently said\, “the world continues to watch in disbelief and with great sadness\, Ukrainians are struggling to survive amidst the chaos of war.” \nThe situation has seen\, and will continue to see\, increasing volatility — reportedly more than five million refugees have crossed into Ukraine’s neighboring countries of Poland\, Hungary\, Romania\, Moldova\, and other countries since February 2022. With many towns and villages almost completely wiped out\, hotels and homes in western Ukraine bursting at the seams with displaced families seeking safety\, how have on-the-ground workers and volunteers responded to deliver urgent medical and psychological care to refugees? And what is the short- and long-term outlook from those on the frontlines? \nThis presentation will feature Medical Teams International’s Patty Hutton\, Response Specialist\, supporting emergency response in Ukraine\, and Joe DiCarlo\, MTI’s Global Ambassador and member of WorldOregon’s Board of Advisors\, for a look at the current situation and outlook on the crisis in Ukraine. \nAbout the Speakers \nPatty Hutton is currently a Response Specialist at Medical Teams International\, focused on supporting the Ukraine response.  Since 2010\, Patty has served across several response contexts with various international NGOs\, including Iraq\, Haiti (the 2010 earthquake\, Hurricanes Isaac and Matthew)\, Philippines\, South Sudan\, Bangladesh\, Darfur\, Somaliland\, Lebanon\, Greece\, Sudan\, Ethiopia\, and most recently Ukraine. She received her master’s degree in Public Policy from Pepperdine University\, and she also received her PhD in March of this year\, in Organizational Leadership—with her dissertation topic focusing on Humanitarian Fatigue in humanitarian aid leaders. Patty has also spent time working on a presidential campaign and has also spent some time outside of the aid world working with an environmental justice organization. \nJoe DiCarlo is Medical Teams International’s Global Ambassador. When Hurricane Mitch barreled through Central America in 1998\, Joe mobilized a team of medical professionals to help suffering families recover. This was his first assignment – responding to the second-deadliest hurricane in recorded history. Over the course of his 20 years at Medical Teams International\, Joe’s led dozens of disaster responses. Seeing the suffering on a mother’s face is what drives him to help Medical Teams International implement programs that provide for the whole person. He currently serves as Medical Teams’ Global Ambassador\, where he builds faith partnerships both domestically and internationally and provides duty of care services for the staff. \nRSVP Here

SUMMARY:19 Years After the Invasion: A Reflection on the U.S. Military Presence in Iraq
DESCRIPTION:Nineteen years ago the Bush administration launched the invasion of Iraq under the pretext of weapons of mass destruction which was later proven false. While the invasion of Iraq removed Saddam Hussein’s brutal dictatorship from power\, it also unleashed an era of sectarian violence\, extremism\, and abuses. \nThe U.S. war in Iraq is now synonymous with an ill-planned interventionism\, a boondoggle.  4\,418 U.S. service members were killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom and another 107 in Operation Inherent Resolve. Approximately another thousand U.S. service members lost their lives in non-hostile incidents while supporting U.S. military actions in Iraq. Between 184\,382 to 207\,156 Iraqis were killed throughout the conflict. Incidents such as the Haditha massacre\, in which U.S. Marines killed 24 unarmed Iraqi civilians\, and the torture of prisoners at Abu Ghraib tarnished the reputation of the U.S. military. De-Baathification\, perceived sectarian marginalization\, and fighting in al-Anbar province later contributed to the rise of ISIS. \nNearly two decades later\, U.S. troops remain in Iraq under attenuated Congressional authorizations. As we look back on the past nineteen years with the gift of hindsight\, we should consider the ways in which the military-industrial complex and foreign policy establishment influenced our continued occupation. DESCRIPTION:World Beyond War is offering a six week\, online course about war and the environmental consequences it causes. \n\nGrounded in research on peace and ecological security\, this course focuses on the relationship between two existential threats: war and environmental catastrophe. We will cover: \n• Where wars happen and why.\n• What wars do to the earth.\n• What imperial militaries do to the earth back home.\n• What nuclear weapons have done and could do to people and the planet.\n• How this horror is hidden and maintained.\n• What can be done. \nThis course is 100% online and interactions are not live or scheduled\, so you can take part whenever works for you. Weekly content includes a mix of text\, images\, video\, and audio. Instructors and students utilize online discussion forums to go over each week’s content\, as well as to provide feedback on optional assignment submissions. \nThe course also includes three 1-hour optional zoom calls which are designed to facilitate a more interactive and real-time learning experience.
