SUMMARY:Tea and Conversation Honoring Local Hiroshima Survivor Planned
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to tea and conversation with Hiroshima atom bomb survivor\, author and activist Hideko Tamura Snider from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday\, Sept. 4\, at Peace House\, 543 S Mountain Ave\, Ashland\, OR 97520. \nThis intimate gathering honoring Hideko – sponsored by Southern Oregon Pachamama Alliance\, Peace House and One Sunny Day Initiatives (OSDI) – provides a perfect opportunity to talk with one of the region’s most dedicated activists whose life work has been devoted to promoting peace and a world free of nuclear weapons. Hideko’s life story\, told in her book One Sunny Day\, is one of courage and perseverance and serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing threat of nuclear warfare. Hideko will share stories from her memoir and welcome questions from attendees. \nBoth Hideko’s memoir One Sunny Day and her picture book written for children\, When a Peace Tree Blooms\, will be available to purchase that day; and she will be signing books upon request after speaking to the group. Her books are also available locally at Bloomsbury Books in Ashland\, and Barnes & Noble in Medford. \nWhen a Peace Tree Blooms\, illustrated in soft watercolors by Japanese artist Mari Kishi\, tells the story of a young child meeting an elderly couple planting special seeds. It’s a universal tale of resilience\, hope and creating peace in the world. It acknowledges the challenges of loss\, choices\, and the rewards of joining together to rebuild a better life. It can also serve as a healing and empowering story for any young child facing devastation and loss\, or a way for friends and classmates to gain deeper empathy for what others may have experienced. It is now available in English\, Japanese\, Chinese\, and Ukrainian\, with a Russian translation ready to publish. \nIn 2007\, Hideko founded One Sunny Day Initiatives (OSDI)\, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization\, to educate the public about the consequences of the use of nuclear weapons and to plant seeds of peace\, hope and reconciliation among people of the world. Hideko has made numerous presentations to organizations throughout the U.S. of her personal experience with the effects of nuclear weapons and her healing process. Learn more about Hideko’s efforts on the OSDI website. \nAttendance at the tea is free\, but please reserve your place by emailing info@sopachamama.org.

SUMMARY:Book Talk – Illusions of Control: Dilemmas in Managing U.S. Proxy Forces in Afghanistan\, Iraq\, and Syria
DESCRIPTION:Since the start of the U.S. war on terror\, the United States has backed various militias and rebels in the Middle East and Central Asia. Using proxies has allowed the U.S. to reduce its own troop deployments and benefit from the local knowledge of indigenous armed groups. However\, these partnerships carry significant diplomatic\, human rights\, reputational\, and tactical risks. Gaston’s book explores case studies of these relationships in Afghanistan\, Iraq\, and Syria\, examining how U.S. policymakers manage these risks. Has support for proxies been a success\, failure\, or something in between? Can proxies truly be managed? And are the risks worth the potential benefits? \nJoin a discussion with Erica Gaston\, Head of the Conflict Prevention and Sustaining Peace Programme at the United Nations University Centre for Policy Research\, that delves into the murky world of U.S. proxy forces in the War on Terror. Adam Weinstein\, Deputy Middle East Director at the Quincy Institute\, will speak with the author. \nThe discussion will take place on Thursday\, August 15th from 12:00 – 1:00 PM Eastern Time. \nRegister with the Quincy Institute

SUMMARY:Where the Olive Trees Weep
DESCRIPTION:Jewish Voice for Peace invites you to a premiere screening of  “Where the Olive Trees Weep” on June 20 at the Varsity Theater. A suggested donation of $10 or two for $15 will be accepted at the door. \nJewish Voice for Peace Rogue Valley is committed to helping to educate our Community. about the origins and roots of the Palestine/Israel conflict. \nOur goal is to shed light on the brutal\, 75-year occupation of Palestine\, the 16-year blockade of Gaza\, and the true nature of Israel as an apartheid State. \nOur mass media\, unfortunately\, often portrays Israel as the victim\, a nation under attack from violent\, barbaric\, and anti-Semitic Arab terrorists. Where the Olive Trees Weep explores the trauma and pain that Palestinians experience under occupation\, and the beauty and resilience of the Palestinian people as they struggle to heal themselves and continue in their quest for Freedom\, Justice\, and Equality. \nThe screening coincides with 21 Days of Conversation about the film and its implications. SUMMARY:Emergency Forum with Israeli Conscientious Objector Yuval Dag
DESCRIPTION:On March 20\, 2023\, Yuval Dag refused his military conscription and was sent by an Israeli military court to prison. \nAfter growing up with a nationalist identity\, Yuval began to question his privilege and how it was maintained through the oppression of Palestinians. “Resistance begins\, first of all\, with self-reflection and understanding. With the understanding that by wearing a uniform and symbols of a certain body\, you choose to represent that body. With the understanding that enlisting in the army is a political choice\, and its meaning is to support the military and political agenda\, and to take part in it. The understanding that even a small cog contributes to the system’s function.” \nYuval decided that he could not in good conscientious accept his military conscription. He spent two months in prison for his refusal to serve and today works with the Israeli Refusers Solidarity Network to support other Israeli Jewish Refusniks. \nJoin us for an urgent and important conversation with Yuval hosted by Ariel Gold of Fellowship of Reconciliation and Diana Oestrich of Red Letter Christians. \ \nRegister for this Zoom Event here.

It tells the tragic story of the many “downwinders” whose health was adversely affected by the fallout from the July 1945 Trinity nuclear test and their betrayal by the U.S. government. \nIn particular\, thousands of New Mexicans—mostly Hispanic and Native American—were exposed to catastrophic levels of radioactive fallout\, never warned\, never acknowledged and never helped afterwards. \nYou can easily watch this film on your phone\, iPad\, laptop\, or desktop by registering here. \nAlongside this special screening is a panel discussion with the filmmakers and a bipartisan group of members of Congress who are fighting to address this wrong. \nThey are pushing legislation to expand and extend the Radiation Effects Compensation Act (RECA) to include Trinity downwinders and other communities. \nThis is an urgent and timely issue.  \nAs you may have read in Arms Control Today\, RECA will expire June 7\, 2024\, unless these advocates win Congressional approval to extend it.

SUMMARY:Make War Visible ... and End It
DESCRIPTION:Submitted by Oregon Peace Works \nAs terrible wars continue in Ukraine\, Gaza\, and elsewhere\, those of us trying to stop them are up against a powerful military-industrial-media complex in the United States. No matter how much coverage of war comes through mainstream news outlets\, the human realities of war are scarcely conveyed. We face the continuing challenge to break through the fog of war propaganda and indifference to effectively challenge the abstractions and evasions that undergird the warfare state here at home. \nOn April 2nd\, the RootsAction Education Fund\, working with the Oregon organizations listed below\, is offering a live online presentation – “Make War Visible … and End It” – to antiwar and social justice activists. Journalist and activist Norman Solomon — author most recently of the 2023 book War Made Invisible: How America Hides the Human Toll of Its Military Machine — will speak via Zoom about the latest war-related events and approaches for understanding— as well as organizing against – what Martin Luther King Jr. called “the madness of militarism.” \nNorman will be joined by journalist/activist Kathy Kelly who also serves as Board President of World Beyond War. \nRegister here \nFor more information please contact: \nDavid Zupan\, 541-525-6067\, zupandavid@gmail.com. \nhttp://warmadeinvisible.com/ \n

SUMMARY:FOR Gathering Voices: The Wall Between – What Jews and Palestinians Don't Want to Know About Each Other
DESCRIPTION:FOR invites you to join us next Tuesday\, November 21st for our monthly Gathering Voices event as I speak to Raja Khouri and Jeffrey Wilkinson\, the authors of the groundbreaking new book “The Wall Between: What Jews and Palestinians Don’t Want to Know About Each Other”. The book\, released just a few days before October 7\, offers concrete ways for Jews and Palestinians to speak (and listen) differently to each other — how needed this is right now cannot be overstated. \n“That this book even exists is remarkable\,” raved Peter Beinart. It’s extraordinarily difficult for a Palestinian and a Jew to write a book that fairly conveys the dominant mood in both communities about Palestine – Israel. But this book not only exists – it’s wise\, engaging and deeply humane. It will prove an essential text in bringing diaspora Jews and Palestinians together in the justice movement that this moment demands\,” he stated. \nSince the horrific massacres on October 7\, people have been choosing sides like it’s a football game. But\, it’s not. Lives and the future and safety of all people in Israel/Palestine are the stakes. Right now\, one child in Gaza is dying every ten minutes. The unprecedented vitriol that is manifesting on university campuses and social media isn’t moving us any closer to peace. What is needed instead is reconciliation based on justice and the inherent worth of all people. All of us\, whether Israeli or Palestinian\, Jewish\, Muslim\, or Christian\, are created in the image of G-d. \nThis inspiring book presents Arabs and Jews with the challenge of seeing the “other” as we want them to see us – fully human\, with our hurts\, history\, and hopes for the future\,” said Dr. James Zogby\, president and founder of the Arab American Institute. “It is a pure application of Martin Buber on the importance of forming ‘I-Thou relationships’ because when we recognize the humanity of others\, it enhances our own humanity\, as well.

SUMMARY:Ukraine Eyewitness: Report from the Front – On the Threat of Nuclear Disaster
DESCRIPTION:A member of Physicians for Social Responsibility’s Committee for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons\, Peter Lumsdaine will lead us in an in-person briefing and discussion of his unique 2023 visit to Ukraine & Poland with a group seeking answers to questions like: \nWhere is the conflict going?   \nWill it lead to global nuclear war?   \nPeter Lumsdaine is a long-term public-interest educator and organizer\, having worked under UC Davis and US Department of Energy grant projects and on the program staff of NGOs such as Global Exchange and the Resource Center for Nonviolence.  His work has taken him to armed resource-conflict zones in occupied Iraq\, Mexico\, and the Philippines –  as well as to Jordan\, Israel\, Guatemala\, Korea\, Hiroshima and Nagasaki.  Over the years he has been an invited speaker for more than 100 campus\, church\, community\, and conference audiences across the US and beyond. \nShortly before the Ukrainian government’s military summer counteroffensive began\, he traveled in Ukraine and Poland with a delegation of the Zaporizhzhia Protection Project (ZPP)\, which seeks to avert a military disaster at the nuclear power plant of that name  –   though his report will also cover the broader situation in Ukraine\, the war’s technological escalation\, and its rapidly accelerating global implications. \nIn Ukraine he and three other delegation members travelled to Kyiv\, Dnipro\, Zaporizhzhia\, the countryside in between\, and then through backroads army checkpoints to the mining town of Marhanets\, near the Ukrainian military’s off-limits “red zone” and the Russian lines\, across the river from the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.\nLumsdaine and other delegation members interviewed Ukrainian townspeople and refugees\, miners and factory workers\, journalists and teachers\, church and community leaders\, former Russian citizens\, government officials\, soldiers\, and Ukrainian anti-war dissenters involved in their country’s semi-underground peace movement. \nContact Peter at tierralinda@gmail.com

SUMMARY:‘Israelism’ at Varsity Theater Friday
DESCRIPTION:We at Jewish Voice for Peace are deeply saddened and horrified by the cruelty and disregard for human life shown by Hamas in their attack on Israel. There can be no justification for their actions. Neither is there justification for Israel’s relentless and indiscriminate bombing of 2 million Palestinians. We call for an immediate  cessation of hostilities\, the release of all hostages\, and the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza. \nIn the midst of this situation\, we are showing a film at the VarsityTheatre that challenges the equation that loving Judaism means unquestioning support of Israeli foreign policy. It questions the proposition that criticizing Israel is somehow anti-Semitic. It is precisely because we love both Judaism and Israel that we feel it is so important to challenge the policies of both Israel and the United States that have brought us to this tragic moment. \nThe film ‘ISRAELISM’ will be shown at the Varsity Theatre October 27th at 4:00 p.m. \nTen years in the making\, this award winning documentary follows two young American Jews with strong emotional attachments to Israel and how their attitudes and beliefs begin to transform as they spend time In Israel and Palestine. They witness the harsh conditions in the West Bank under Israeli occupation and begin to challenge Israel to follow the Jewish ethics and values they hold dear. \nFollowing the film\, there will be a Q&A with one of the filmmakers. We are asking for an $8 donation at the door. \nEveryone is welcome! For more information\, please contact Avram at avramsacks@gmail.com.

DESCRIPTION:“Now I am become death\, the destroyer of worlds\,” quoted Robert Oppenheimer years after leading development of the atomic bomb. \nWill someone in the future say the same thing about genetic engineering\, artificial intelligence\, geoengineering\, or some other 21st century technology? \nThe Jefferson Center invites members and guests to discuss these ideas on the from 4 to 6 pm on Sunday\, October 8\, in The Jefferson Center in the Old Ashland Armory. \nIn the mid 20th century\, invention\, development and use of nuclear weapons reminded the world of moral and ethical implications of scientific and technological development. \nIn this salon\, we’ll discuss the responsibilities of those who create new and\ntransformational technology? Who is responsible to ensure responsible use of\ntechnology? Is it us? \nThe Jefferson Center invites you to join a discussion of these questions. This event is part of the Salon series of The Jefferson Center\, a Rogue Valley non-profit focused on critical thinking using secular humanist values to understand and engage with issues important to our community. See https:thejeffcenter.org for more details on this and other events.

The relationship will support humanitarian aid and fundraising efforts within the Ashland community. The approved partnership authorized Mayor Tonya Graham to sign a Memorandum of Understanding that memorializes the relationship between Sviatohirs’k and Ashland and offers support amidst unimaginable suffering and dire conditions faced by our brothers and sisters of Ukraine. \nThe new sister city relationship will involve various reciprocal activities in education\, the arts and business\, such as exchange programs\, scholarships\, cultural events\, language training programs and potential business partnerships – Much like the relationship the City of Ashland has shared with their other sister city\, Guanajuato\, for over 50 years. However\, due to the devastation of Sviatohirs’k by Russian occupation in 2022\, the immediate goal will be to aid the new sister city. The Ashland–Sviatohirs’k Aid Project (ASAP) will be vital in this effort. \n“The city was 70% destroyed by the Russians\,” stated Ben Stott\, who has been leading the effort to form the new sister city relationship. “They were occupied for four months. When they (Russians) left\, they stole pretty much everything. They cleaned out the hospital. They just wiped out everything and stole it\, and so what we’re hoping to do through fundraising and public awareness is to help them rebuild the civic infrastructure so that they can get a working government again so people will start to move back to the city\,” Stott said. Graham added that she spoke with the Mayor of Sviatohirsk’s about the destruction of many parts of the Ukrainian city\, but the Ukrainian Mayor emphasized there is hope in the future of reciprocating the relationship with Ashland. But right now\, resources are needed.
