SUMMARY:SOCAN’s Ashland CEAP Workshop Series Continues with a session on Compost
DESCRIPTION:In 2017\, the Ashland City Council passed a citizen led policy called the Climate and Energy Action Plan (CEAP). The goals of the plan were to reduce community greenhouse gas emissions and prepare the city to be more resilient to climate change impacts. As the Ashland Climate Collaborative notes on their website: “Eight years in\, the CEAP is still a great foundation for reaching our climate goals.” Over the intervening years\, residential awareness of the CEAP has decreased. In order to reverse that trend\, Southern Oregon Climate Action Now Executive Director Danial Scotton\, has facilitated a series of open public workshops during which aspects of the CEAP are discussed in relation to CEAP goals\, the current status of action\, and what needs to be done. \nThis is thee third workshop in the series will address the subject of Food Waste and Compost. This will be held in the Gresham Room of Ashland Public Library.

Parking is available off Winburn Way\, just north of the Granite Street intersection. SOPA’S Solstice and Equinox ceremonies\, led by Louise Paré\, are centered around gratitude while gently reflecting on themes related to the season\, recent events or the state of our world at this time. This month\, the theme will be Listening to the Earth. Attendees are invited to speak from their hearts or to simply be in silence in community with others. SOPA began hosting Solstice and Equinox ceremonies beginning with the Winter Solstice in 2012.

SUMMARY:Earth Listening Circle
DESCRIPTION:People across the world will pause — alone or together — to listen for guidance — from the Earth\, from the Spirit of Life. As we open ourselves to listen in this way\, we begin to sense how to move forward from a place of integrity and responsibility\, qualities essential for navigating the complexity of these times. \nJoin the Southern Oregon Pachamama Alliance community to create a field where a different kind of intelligence can be heard — an intelligence that has been evolving\, adapting\, and guiding the natural world for billions of years — and reconnect with what matters most: the living world\, each other\, and our own deeper knowing. \nEmail to RSVP for this event and for more details. Learn more about the Pachamama Alliance Earth Listening events.

SUMMARY:Gather and Watch the Gaza Flotilla
DESCRIPTION:The Global Sumud Flotilla carrying humanitarian aid is docked at Tunis and will shortly depart for Gaza. The main convoy of 21 ships began in Barcelona on September 4th. On board are people from more than 44 countries\, prompted by the intentional starvation of the Palestinians in Gaza. You can track its progress for yourself at globalsumudflotilla.org/tracker/ \nTuesday\, September 16th\, at 6:30 p.m. South Mountain Friends Meeting (Quakers) and Peace House are gathering to witness the voyage of the flotilla at Peace House\, 543 S. Mountain Ave. in Ashland. We’ll watch short videos sent from the ships and\, if the flotilla has made contact with the Israeli blockade\, any footage of what happened. The Global Sumud Flotilla has already faced multiple attacks\, including a drone attack while docked at Tunis. \nWhile we hope we will be watching footage of the flotilla’s successful arrival and distribution of aid in Gaza\, anything is possible in the coming days. Past flotillas have been boarded illegally in international waters by Israeli forces\, with their crews arrested and cargo confiscated. In 2010\, when Israeli naval commanders from speedboats and helicopters boarded the Mavi Marmara\, ten aid activists were killed and ten Israeli servicemen were wounded. \nCome witness the bravery of the crews determined to bring necessary aid to Palestinians and connect with others concerned and ready to take action to challenge the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

SUMMARY:Southern Oregon Wildfire Risk: The Climate Connection
DESCRIPTION:Fire and smoke have become an annual source of concern for Oregonians\, especially for those of us living in the Southwest. As wildfire trends become increasingly obvious\, questions about their drivers become more urgent. Yet\, many factors affect wildfire behavior and impact: forest management\, disruptions to fire’s natural role\, patterns of development\, and\, importantly\, changes to the climate.
What do we know about how wildfires are changing\, the causes\, and options for climate adaptation?

Dr. Chris Adlam\, Southwest Regional Fire Specialist with the Oregon State University Extension Service\, Southern Oregon Research and Extension Center\, will be the featured speaker at the August Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN) monthly general meeting. Adlam will discuss how climate is influencing fire risk in the region\, what climate projections portend for our future\, and what steps we can take to minimize the risk. There is no charge for attending SOCAN events.
