SUMMARY:How Climate Science Divides Us
\, How to Build Consensus
DESCRIPTION:An abundance of scientific evidence is readily available confirming the reality of human-induced global warming and its climate consequences – and the causes. There is also a wealth of evidence regarding what is needed to divert the current climate trajectory which threatens life on the planet as we know it. Given this evidence\, climate scientists and activists are frustrated and disappointed by the limited success of climate mitigation policies. \nDr Rob Winthrop\, a member of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Maryland\, has reflected on this conundrum and will discuss his thinking on the reasons for this failure. Dr. Winthrop’s presentation is the focus of the July Southern Oregon Climate Action Now free monthly public general meetings. \nWinthrop argues that climate change is not an environmental problem. It is a social problem with profound environmental consequences. While acknowledging the soundness of climate science\, he questions how the science has been used to shape policies around highly technical objectives (such as “net zero” emissions) that lack social salience and fail to build consensus. He suggests that we should encourage social mobilization for a climate-positive future around shared goals\, not beliefs (including a belief in human-caused climate change). Thus\, he thinks that rather than focusing primarily on reducing greenhouse gas emissions\, we should pursue climate action as a co-benefit of other socially desired goals\, such as energy efficiency and self-reliance.

SUMMARY:Diné Activist Pat McCabe (Woman Stands Shining) to Speak
DESCRIPTION:Join the Pachamama Alliance upcoming Resilience & Possibility in These Times session with Pat McCabe (Woman Stands Shining) — Diné activist\, ceremonial leader\, writer and longtime friend and ally of Pachamama Alliance. \nWhen bombs are dropped and families are torn apart\, when power feels immune to conscience\, it can feel like nothing we do will make a difference. And yet\, Indigenous leaders like Pat McCabe remind us: another way is not only possible but it has always been part of the human story.

She asks us to consider that what’s needed now may not be more urgency or sharper strategy\, but a deeper kind of listening and remembering — one that aligns our actions with the profound intelligence of life. She invites us into “a mad love affair with the Earth” as the way through. \nPat brings a wisdom and worldview shaped by Indigenous tradition and a fierce devotion for life on Earth. Her work dissolves outdated paradigms around power\, gender\, even science\, and offers\, in their place\, a sacred worldview rooted in kinship\, reciprocity\, and collective thriving. \nPat McCabe — also known as Woman Stands Shining — is a Diné (Navajo) mother\, grandmother\, activist\, artist\, writer\, ceremonial leader\, and international speaker. Rooted in Indigenous sciences of “Thriving Life\,” she weaves healing through her writing\, talks and ceremonies—reframing power\, gender\, technology\, and science into sacred systems of kinship\, consent\, and collective flourishing. She is a long time friend and partner to Pachamama Alliance. Register.

SUMMARY:Call U.S. Representatives NOW – It’s Not too Late to Stop the “Big Ugly Bill”!

Republicans are celebrating\, and we understand if you’re feeling angry and deflated\, but this fight isn’t over. You’ve already moved the needle. You made Medicaid the defining issue of the debate. Senator Thom Tillis broke with Trump on national TV\, called out the cruelty of this bill\, and announced he wouldn’t seek re-election rather than betray his state’s Medicaid recipients. That didn’t happen in a vacuum — it happened because North Carolinians showed up\, called in\, rallied at Hands Off events\, and refused to let him look away. The bill now heads back to the House\, where Republicans can only afford to lose three votes. It barely squeaked by with a single-vote margin the first time\, and it’s only gotten more divisive since. Here is what you can do now.

SUMMARY:Europe In Crisis Webinar
DESCRIPTION:In the midst of tectonic and dangerous geopolitical change\, Europe and the NATO nations are becoming warfare\, not welfare states. This will be consolidated in this month’s NATO summit.\nCaught between Trump shocks\, the Ukraine War\, and the Russia/China quasi alliance\, Europe is in the midst of war\, turmoil\, and massive remilitarization. \nIn addition to increasing the danger of war\, massive cuts in social welfare spending provide openings for renewed European fascism. France\, Germany\, Britain\, and Poland are pressing military collaboration and creation of a new European Union military within and potentially independent from NATO as anti-Russian fervor takes hold. Germany’s massive rearmament adds to anxiety in Paris as well as in Moscow. And incidents in the Baltic Sea could lead to escalating – even nuclear – conflict. \nTo help our movements respond\, Massachusetts Peace Action (MAPA) and Campaign for Peace\, Disarmament and Common Security (CPDCS) have organized this webinar featuring Kate Hudson and Reiner Braun. \nKate Hudson is a British political activist and academic and vice-president of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) and co-national secretary of Left Unity. She has served as CND chair\, general secretary from 2010 to 2024\, and as an officer of the Stop the War Coalition. She is a board member of the International Peace Bureau. \nReiner Braun is a German journalist\, historian\, and peace activist. Until recently\, he was executive director of the International Peace Bureau and previously served as IPB president. Reiner has been involved in the peace movement since 1982. He worked for the Krefeld Appeal against nuclear weapons\, was a founding member of the International Network of Engineers and Scientists for Global Responsibility and was executive director of the German section of the International Association of Lawyers against Nuclear Arms. \nRegister and get more information.

SUMMARY:Rally! Take Back Congress’s Constitutional Authority to Declare War
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, June 21\, after 9 days of war between Israel and Iran\, President Trump bombed three nuclear sites in Iran\, effectively entering the US as a party to the war. \nTrump’s strikes violated international law and destroyed the fragile trust that had been built between the U.S. and Iran — and made diplomacy harder\, not easier. As with the Iraq War\, these strikes are based on faulty intelligence and fear-mongering. Trump started this war — now Congress must stop it before more lives are lost. \nAmericans don’t want this war. Lawmakers have a choice to make: will they side with the people they represent\, or align with a warmongering minority intent on dragging us into disaster? \nThat is why Peace House is calling on Representative Cliff Bentz to uphold the Constitution and support House Concurrent Resolution 38. The resolution condemns President Trump’s violation of the U.S. Constitution and the War Powers Act of 1973\, and requires that any hostilities with Iran be explicitly authorized by a declaration of war. \nWe’ll gather at Vogel Plaza\, then we’ll proceed to field office of U.S. Representative Cliff Bentz at 14 N. Central Ave.\, Medford\, around 10:15 a.m. \nBring signs! No War With Iran\, No Illegal Wars\, Yes to HCR 38

SUMMARY:A Public Art Unveiling honoring Lorraine Hansberry and Black Lives
DESCRIPTION:A landmark cultural moment in Ashland: the unveiling of one of the city’s first Playwright’s Plaques\, honoring legendary playwright Lorraine Hansberry and commemorating Black lives lost to racial injustice — including local youth Aidan Ellison\, is timed just after Juneteenth. \nThis public ceremony marks a significant step in Ashland’s effort to uplift voices of social justice and Black artistry through lasting\, visible art. The plaque — featuring original artwork by Micah BlackLight and bronze casting by local artist Jack Langford — will be permanently installed as a touchstone for reflection and dialogue. \nThis is a story of community-led action\, collaboration between artists\, students\, and local organizations\, and a rare project funded by the city’s public arts budget. Supporting organizations include Ashland’s Social Equity & Racial Justice Advisory Committee\, Public Arts Advisory Committee\, and Ashland Playwrights Walk\, sponsors — Oregon Shakespeare Festival\, Southern Oregon University\, the Ashland Chamber of Commerce & the City of Ashland. \nAbout the Playwright’s Plaques:\nThe Playwright’s Plaques are a series of bronze artworks installed throughout Ashland to celebrate the city’s rich theater culture. Initiated by community members and supported by local institutions\, the project aims to honor playwrights and significant cultural figures. Each plaque features a quote from the honoree\, serving as a lasting tribute to their contributions to the arts and society. Ashland News \nAbout the Public Arts Advisory Committee:\nThe Public Arts Advisory Committee (PAAC) is a volunteer group appointed by the Ashland City Council to advise on matters related to public art in Ashland.
