SUMMARY:No Kings Rally
DESCRIPTION:Donald Trump is planning a military parade in Washington\, D.C. for his birthday on June 14. This display of might is intended to intimidate opponents and solidify his image as a strongman on our dime—we won’t stand by while that happens. Instead of allowing this military parade to be the center of gravity\, we will make action everywhere else the story of America that day: people coming together in communities across the country to reject strongman politics and corruption. \nThird Act is proud to partner with Indivisible\, Public Citizen\, Social Security Works\, and other groups in this effort. This country doesn’t belong to a king — and we’re not letting him throw himself a taxpayer-funded parade while slashing our rights and programs our families depend on. Sign up at NO KINGS to take the pledge to show up on June 14 and be the first to get updates\, tools\, and ways to take action. \nOur role is to bring the power and wisdom of elders to this movement\, making sure our voices are heard loud and clear to protect our democracy and our rights. We aim to promote and mobilize attendance at these events across the country. \nIf you want to get inspired for June 14\, check out this “No Kings then or now” call on May 9\, 4 – 5:30 pm ET with historian Heather Cox Richardson\, MA Attorney General Andrea Campbell\, and Congressman Jamie Raskin. \nA core principle behind all No Kings events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values. \nMeet Indivisible for the NEXT BIG RALLY along McAndrews Road in Medford. Our goal is to double our numbers from April 5\, having a line of protesters stretching from Biddle Road to Crater Lake Avenue.

SUMMARY:Help Support Climate Teaching in Classrooms
DESCRIPTION:Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN) is working to support K-12 educators in Southern Oregon who want to bring climate education into their classrooms. SOCAN seeks to support K-12 educators by providing science-based resources\, professional development\, and collaboration opportunities to bring science-based Climate Change Education (CCE) into classrooms across the curriculum and grade levels To do that effectively\, we need to hear directly from teachers. Take this short survey to learn more about how educators are thinking about climate change and how we can support them in meeting Oregon’s climate standards. If you’re a teacher\, we hope you’ll take a few minutes to share your perspective. Even if you’re not a teacher\, you can help by sharing this message to any educators you know. Please complete the survey now so we can use the summer months to shape supportive programming. (SOCAN) is a grassroots\, nonprofit organization of volunteers dedicated to promoting awareness and action on climate change issues in Southern Oregon. Questions? Contact Kathy Conway.

SUMMARY:How to Build a Bridge: The Road to Reconciliation
DESCRIPTION:Are the growing divides in our world starting to feel overwhelming? The first step\, and one that each one of us can do\, is to “depolarize within.” \nWe need to look for the walls of separation and hostility inside ourselves and learn how we can start dissolving them. With that as a starting point\, we become bearers of reconciliation in our own homes\, within our existing family structures\, in our workplaces\, and beyond. Come find out some ways\, as individuals\, we can get there. \nThis FREE presentation starts at 11:30 (Feel free to attend the service on Reconciliation at 10\, or for snacks at 11:15) \nPresenter: Marla Estes\, Founder\, Building Bridgers\, working to bridge the political divide since 2017 \nGet more information.

SUMMARY:Protest Avelo Airlines: Sign the Petition
DESCRIPTION:ORD2 Indivisible is planning a protest at Rogue County International Airport\, Medford\, to tell Avelo Airlines: “Stop helping ICE deport our neighbors.” There will be demonstrations at every airport Avelo serves to call for a passenger boycott until Avelo breaks with ICE. \nAvelo\, a budget carrier\, recently announced a contract to begin operating deportation flights for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement starting May 12. Avelo flies between Medford and Burbank\, Calif.\, every Monday and Friday. \nThe location will be Biddle Road near the entrance and exit to the airport. Participants in the demonstration can find free parking along O’Hare Boulevard\, which tees into Biddle opposite the airport entrance\, or pay a small amount for short-term parking at the airport. \nORD2’s Community Protection Team (CPT)\, which is organizing this action\, will have a large banner to display\, but participants are encouraged to make and bring signs communicating our solidarity with our undocumented sisters and brothers and our displeasure at Avelo’s complicity with the Trump roundups. \nAs an aid to sorting out the logistics\, please let CPT co-leader Herb Rothschild know if you’re planning to come. And everyone can put pressure on Avelo by signing the national “We won’t fly” petition.

SUMMARY:Working toward Electrification of Medford
DESCRIPTION:An Oregon Environmental Council (OEC) representative will speak at the Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN) general meeting this month. OEC’s Max Light-Pacheco will preview OEC’s effort to stimulate electrification and energy efficiency in Medford – a project being undertaken in collaboration with SOCAN’s Medford Climate Action Team (MCAT). \nOEC was established in 1968 by concerned Oregonians across the state to protect the water\, air\, and land we all share and love. OEC has a statewide focus and had long served as a leading organization in efforts to stimulate climate action in the Oregon legislature and among Oregon state agencies. SOCAN has collaborated extensively over the years with OEC on climate action and their work in Southern Oregon. \nYour voice\, your attention\, and your continued presence matter. Together\, we’re building a more informed and resilient Oregon.

SUMMARY:Books Not Bombs
DESCRIPTION:Following up on an earlier Massachusetts Peace Action Education Fund Conference will be gathering to explore paths to protect the federal budget supporting public schools\, and continuing to try to reach out to parents and grandparents among our Peace Action affiliates and their local allies. Register here. The threats to federal education programs have become acute. Funds for PELL grants\, title I and disability programs are at risk in the Trump/Musk Administration. The proposed termination of the Dept of Education will weaken other school programs. Though organizations representing teachers and educators\, including NEA\, AFT and AAUP\, have come together to resist the proposed cuts\,\, it remains difficult to reach parents\, who generally lack statewide organizations. Their local school district organizations rarely address the federal budget.

SUMMARY:Music & Song: ‘Be a Light’ for Peace\, Justice\, the Earth
DESCRIPTION:The Rogue Valley Peace Choir — now celebrating its 22nd year — is presenting a concert entitled Be a Light. The choir — directed by Rob Griswell-Lowry and accompanied by Mikiko Petrucelli — is a community\, secular choir dedicated to building peace\, equality\, social justice\, and stewardship of our planet through song. The concert’s Be a Light theme is inspired by one of the songs in the choir’s repertoire that encourages people not to “hide in the dark\,” but to be a light in a world full of hate\, to be peace in a time full of war\, and to make a difference where change is needed. Other songs in the repertoire express the choir’s passion for recognizing the connection to everyone in our community and beyond; for supporting social justice\, diversity and self acceptance; and for treading lightly on our Mother Earth. While the concerts are free\, donations of any amount are welcome\, with a suggested donation of $15 for adults; no one will be turned away. Donations support the choir’s ability to perform for free at schools\, senior homes\, and community events throughout the year. See more about the choir and its staff.
