SUMMARY:Music & Song: ‘Be a Light’ for Peace\, Justice\, the Earth
DESCRIPTION:The Rogue Valley Peace Choir — now celebrating its 22nd year — is presenting a concert entitled Be a Light. The choir — directed by Rob Griswell-Lowry and accompanied by Mikiko Petrucelli — is a community\, secular choir dedicated to building peace\, equality\, social justice\, and stewardship of our planet through song. The concert’s Be a Light theme is inspired by one of the songs in the choir’s repertoire that encourages people not to “hide in the dark\,” but to be a light in a world full of hate\, to be peace in a time full of war\, and to make a difference where change is needed. Other songs in the repertoire express the choir’s passion for recognizing the connection to everyone in our community and beyond; for supporting social justice\, diversity and self acceptance; and for treading lightly on our Mother Earth. While the concerts are free\, donations of any amount are welcome\, with a suggested donation of $15 for adults; no one will be turned away. Donations support the choir’s ability to perform for free at schools\, senior homes\, and community events throughout the year. See more about the choir and its staff. The concert will be repeat at 3 p.m. Sunday\, May 18\, at First United Methodist Church\, 175 N. Main St.\, Ashland.

SUMMARY:How do you reconcile a lynching? A story of justice and redemption.
DESCRIPTION:This event will focus on the legacy of Alonzo Tucker\, Oregon’s most widely documented African American victim of lynching\, and how his memory has inspired a movement for historical reconciliation. Taylor Stewart will share about how the search for an answer to this question transformed his life and taught him the potential to find true justice for Oregon’s history of racial injustice. \n“This story is not just about reconciliation; it’s about finding a way to heal and foster hope in our communities\,” Stewart explains. “By confronting these painful narratives\, we can begin to foster understanding and pave the way for a more just future.” \nGabrielle Johnsen\, founder of Grants Pass Remembrance (from Sundown to Sunrise) and Community Engagement Director of ORP\, will join the discussion. A Q&A session will follow. \nPlease register for the event.

DESCRIPTION:Opportunities for Housing\, Resources and Assistance (OHRA) and HomeShare Oregon are hosting the showing of the movie No Place to Grow Old to benefit both organizations. \nThe non-profit HomeShare Oregon has three priority goals: to culturally normalize homesharing\, to increase direct services to seniors\, and to incentivize homesharing to address Oregon’s affordable housing crisis. SUMMARY:The New Nuclear Arms Race - A Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Register for this free event\nMark the date! April 25\, 2025 \nPeace House is sponsoring a Symposium on the New Nuclear Arms Race at SOU on April 25\, 2025. Speakers include Kevin Martin\, President of Peace Action\, and Eddie Laiché of Students for Nuclear Disarmament. \nWhy do we sponsor this event? \nThe world’s nuclear weapons states are busy upgrading their deadly arsenals. In the U.S. alone\, this modernization will cost over a trillion dollars. The plans include a new intercontinental missile (the Sentinel)\, new nuclear submarines and submarine-based missiles\, the manufacturing of new plutonium pits\, as well as the vast new infrastructure necessary to deploy these weapons. \nSince the end of the Cold War\, concerns of nuclear war have receded to the background. But the dangers of nuclear war are ever-present. One of the largest dangers is that of an accidental use of these weapons. The list of false alarms is long and scary. Again and again\, technical mishaps and incorrect information have led to alerts. \nOne of the most destabilizing parts of the U.S. arsenal are the intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) in silos all over the upper Midwest. In the case of an alert\, the U.S. president has a mere 30 minutes to decide whether or not to launch these missiles. The logic of “use them or lose them” will put incredible pressure on whoever holds the office to initiate a launch that will mean the end of the world as we know it. \nBut there is a way forward. Eliminate the ICBMs. The U.S. has a sufficient retaliatory capacity with its submarine-based missiles and its bombers without the destabilizing ICBMs. \nSpeaker Bios \nKevin Martin\, President of Peace Action and the Peace Action Education Fund\, joined the staff on Sept 4\, 2001. Kevin previously served as Director of Project Abolition\, a national organizing effort for nuclear disarmament\, from August 1999 through August 2001. Kevin came to Project Abolition after ten years in Chicago as Executive Director of Illinois Peace Action. Prior to his decade-long stint in Chicago\, Kevin directed the community outreach canvass for Peace Action (then called Sane/Freeze) in Washington\, D.C.\, where he started as a door-to-door canvasser with the organization in 1985. Kevin’s writing has appeared in The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, The Nation\, Los Angeles Times\, Atlanta Journal-Constitution\, The Village Voice\, The Chicago Tribune\, Chicago Sun-Times\, The Progressive\, Z magazine and many other publications. He has appeared on CNN\, National Public Radio\, Fox News\, MSNBC\, BBC-TV and radio\, and many other local\, national and international radio and television outlets. Kevin has traveled abroad representing Peace Action and the U.S. peace movement on delegations and at conferences in Russia\, Japan\, China\, Mexico and Britain. He is married\, with two children\, and lives in Silver Springs\, Maryland. \nEddie Laiché is a civil engineering student at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. When he was in high school\, he learned about the devastating health impacts of a hypothetical modern-day nuclear weapon attack. Since then\, he has been advocating extensively with the Back from the Brink Coalition and Students for Nuclear Disarmament (SND) to raise awareness of the inhumanity of nuclear weapons and the urgency to abolish them. In high school\, they got a proclamation to be passed by the mayor of our city\, calling for the abolition of nuclear weapons. After becoming a steering committee member of SND\, he has spoken/attended a variety of conferences and panelist discussions.\n \nRegister for this free event

SUMMARY:SOCAN Tracking More Than 70 Legislative Bills
DESCRIPTION:Attend SOCAN’s Salem Legislative Advocacy 2025 event to learn what’s unfolded over the past three months\, hear highlight on key wins and ongoing challenges\, and ask questions and join in a community dialogue. \nSOCAN’s Federal and State Project Team continues to play a pivotal role during Oregon’s legislative sessions. As this team navigates the 2025 Legislative Session\, it is currently tracking more than 70 bills addressing greenhouse gas reduction\, climate adaptation\, and individual action. Of particular concern are several proposals aimed at reversing Oregon’s 1980 ballot measure\, which prohibits the development of nuclear energy facilities without a verified\, safe method of waste disposal. \nWith the invaluable support of eight dedicated volunteers\, SOCAN submitted more than 120 public comments this session. Collective efforts have already made a difference — several harmful bills failed to move forward after the March 21 deadline. \n
