SUMMARY:War is Not Justified by Politics
DESCRIPTION:This webinar looks at the contrast between the bi-partisan militarism of the United States\, on the one hand\, and the starkly different governing philosophies of the two parties\, on the other. Why does party politics lead us to support wars\, or at least not oppose them\, purely on the basis of which party is conducting them? This growing polarization is leading us to support or oppose other critical policies as well\, purely on the basis of what party those policies are identifies with — rather than a rational and moral assessment of the issue at hand. See more and to register.

SUMMARY:March Against Monarchy
DESCRIPTION:A national activist organization\, calling itself 50501 for 50 States 50 Capitals 1 Movement\, sprang into being after Trump was inaugurated and called for the first set of rallies to be organized by local groups in the capital cities of all 50 states on Feb. 5th. Activists in many locations who couldn’t or didn’t want to travel to their state capitals\, organized local versions. Several people\, including Allen Hallmark and an Ashland resident named Rochelle\, organized a 50501 rally in the snow at the Ashland Plaza on February 5th. Only about a baker’s dozen showed up with just Facebook and BlueSky posts and word of mouth to tell folks about the rally. \nNational 50501\, which seems to be an amalgam of several activist groups on the East Coast\, called for a second round of rallies for Presidents Day\, February 17th\, and called it “Not Our President Day.” Huge rallies were held all over the country including in Medford where between 250 and 500 folks rallied at Medford City Hall and then marched to Vogel Plaza in the heart of downtown Medford. \n \nAnother rally called for by 50501 is being organized in Medford from 12 noon to 2 pm Tuesday\, March 4th\, gathering first at City Hall and followed again by a march to Vogel Plaza. The signs people have made for these rallies have been amazing. Click here to see photos of the Feb. 17th rally at Vogel Plaza. \nSeveral individuals have signed up with 50501 and claim to be the organizer of the local rallies. In fact\, a bunch of folks see the 50501call for a rally and urge their friends and supporters to join the fun. It’s a grassroots one for all and all for one kind of thing.

SUMMARY:Redefining Sustainability for a Turbulent 21st Century
DESCRIPTION:John Giordanengo\, author of “Ecosystems as Models for Restoring Our Economies\,” is the featured speaker at Southern Oregon Climate Action Now’s February Monthly General Meeting. Drawing from three decades of experience and research in business\, economics\, ecology\, and conservation\, John H. Giordanengo explores the dynamic relationship between three governing components of highly complex systems — diversity\, energy\, and trade — to reveal a novel hypothesis on the structure of sustainable economies. The inspiration for his work is our economy’s sister system\, nature. Giordanengo offers a novel approach to achieving lasting conservation\, recognizing that humanity’s most serious concerns cannot be resolved by just environmental and social advocates. See more.

SUMMARY:Ashland City Council Votes on Climate Policy
DESCRIPTION:Ashland City Council will deliberate and vote on a pollution fee ordinance aimed to incentivize developers to build new homes with efficient\, electric appliances. The goal of the pollution fee is to ensure that the majority of new built homes in Ashland are built with the health of residents and the climate in mind. The ordinance is designed to improve indoor air quality and remove health risks caused by gas appliances in the home\, while contributing to Ashland’s climate goal of reducing emissions. If the ordinance is passed\, those who choose to install gas appliances in newly constructed homes will be charged an up-front fee based on the lifecycle of each gas appliance and its carbon emissions. The fee would not impact existing homes. This will be the first policy of its kind in Oregon.

SUMMARY:Celebrate the Release of Leonard Peltier
DESCRIPTION:Join Leonard Peltier’s son\, Chauncey Peltier\, and for a community potluck\, singing\, drumming\, flute music\, and dancing to honor Leonard Peltier’s release from Federal imprisonment. Leonard Peltier\, an American Indian activist\, was imprisoned for nearly half a century after he was convicted for the 1975 killings of two FBI agents. President Joe Biden commuted Peltier’s sentence following decades of community-led advocacy calling his imprisonment an example of the U.S. government’s mistreatment of Native Americans. The commutation is not a pardon for crimes committed\, a decision some of Peltier’s advocates welcomed since he has always maintained his innocence. Peltier\, who is now 80 and of declining health\, will transition to home confinement. The celebration is sponsored by Southern Oregon Indian Center; Takelma Cultural Center; Multicultural Association of Southern Oregon; Table Rock Foundation; and Red Earth Descendants.

SUMMARY:Big Ideas: The Teenage Brain: Impacts on Despair\, Homelessness & Substance Abuse
DESCRIPTION:What is unique about the development of teenage brains\, and what is different about teens’ experience of despair\, homelessness\, and substance abuse? Hear from Mary Ferrell\, Executive Director of the Maslow Project\, and Lacey Corbett\, MA\, Clinical Supervisor of the Maslow Project for insights into how teens navigate those types of challenges. \nMary Ferrell is the founder and Executive Director of Maslow Project\, www.maslowproject.com. Born and raised in Medford\, she graduated from Southern Oregon University and began working with homeless children and families through the Medford School District in 2000. After doing that work several years\, Ferrell saw the need for a “youth-centric” one-stop resource center where kids and families could quickly and easily access essential needs and support services all in one location. She founded Maslow Project as a grassroots effort in 2006 and earned 501(c)3 nonprofit status in 2009. Ferrell has initiated and developed programs including housing\, outreach initiatives\, and school-based programs that achieve an average of 92% on-time graduate rates year after year. She has served on numerous boards addressing housing\, children and family services\, and civil rights and is currently a Governor-appointed member of the Oregon Housing Stability Council. \nLacey Corbett\, MA\, LPC is a licensed therapist in Oregon. She obtained a Bachelor’s degree at Southern Oregon University and an Master’s from Naropa University in Boulder\, Colorado. Naropa is known for its outstanding Art Therapy program and contemplative-based (Buddhist inspired) education model. Corbett has 13 years of experience using mindfulness-based practices and Art Therapy – along with traditional counseling services – for individuals ages 11+. She provides therapy services to youth and families at Maslow Project (those experiencing houselessness)\, Lotus Rising Project (LGBTQ+)\, and Family Solutions (local high schools). Her experience includes the development of a Drop-in\, Open Art Studio at Maslow. In addition to operating a private practice\, she provides clinical supervision for Maslow Project case managers and brings a deep understanding of the unique challenges youth and families face in Southern Oregon. Other specialty areas are ADHD\, trauma\, grief and loss\, anxiety and depression. \nThe monthly Big Ideas discussion series features prominent local experts speaking on relevant and timely issues affecting our community. Lectures are jointly sponsored by the Ashland Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and Jackson County Library Services.
