SUMMARY:Election 2024: What does it mean for climate action?
DESCRIPTION:Submitted by SOCAN \nElections always have consequences. This is especially the case for our potential to address\nthe climate crisis when some candidates for office accept the science of global warming and it\nclimate change consequences while others display something between skepticism and outright\nrejection of science. From the local to the national level the outcomes from the 2024 general\nelection will indicate profoundly whether meaningful action is likely. \nThe Southern Oregon Climate Action Now November General Meeting will focus on an\nexploration of what the election results mean for climate action in the near future. Special guest\nand notable climate champion State Representative Pam Marsh will offer insight regarding what\nthe election outcome means for climate action as we approach the 2025 long session.\nAdditionally\, SOCAN co-facilitator. Alan Journet will explore what the results mean for federal\naction\, Denise Krause will discuss what results mean for the Jackson County Board of\nCommissioners and SOCAN co-facilitator Kathy Conway will do likewise for regional city\nelection results. \nThe meeting is free and open to the public and will occur from 6:00 – 7:30 on Tuesday\nNovember 26 th at the Medford Public Library\, 205 S Central Ave\, Medford.

SUMMARY:When Truth Becomes the Enemy: Voices from Jenin
DESCRIPTION:A Community Gathering with Mariam Barghouti\, Ashira Darwish & Rawand Arqawi \nJoin SAND for a pressing conversation amongst three remarkable women who bring crucial perspectives from Jenin’s ongoing tragedy\, in the context of escalated violence in the West Bank and the genocide in Gaza. Palestinian journalist Mariam Barghouti and Jenin resident Rwanda Arqawi share their firsthand experiences\, cutting through the fog of misinformation to reveal the human realities often obscured in Western mainstream narratives. \nAt a time when documenting truth has become increasingly dangerous\, these voices from the ground illuminate not only Israel’s violence in Jenin\, but also the danger of bearing witness to it. Israel has killed more journalists in Palestine than died in any other conflict over the past three decades. Via personal stories and professional insights\, our speakers highlight the impact of ongoing Israeli military operations\, the resilience of Palestinians in Jenin and throughout the region\, and the critical importance of preserving and sharing truth in the face of systemic erasure. \nJoin us in community for this timely discussion about the power of testimony\, the cost of silence\, and the need to amplify voices from the ground. \nThere is a suggested donation of $25 for this event. \nProceeds from this community gathering will go to training young people in Jenin on photography and film production\, as well as purchasing video equipment (cameras\, audio\, computers and lighting). \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Homelessness in Our Region: Jefferson Center Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Echo Fields\, retired SOU professor of sociology\, will join the Jefferson Center for a discussion of Homelessness in our Region. The discussion will focus on key issues relating to homelessness. \nThese include: problems in gathering reliable data on the homeless population; how this information relates to stereotypes about homelessness arising from stigma\, emotion\, and punitive impulses; what needs to change in our social systems in order to implement solutions to homelessness; and what kinds of actions individuals and non-profit organizations might undertake. \nBlaming and trying to change homeless individuals is unlikely to resolve the problem\, and such approaches let “comfortable people” off the hook for the need for system changes. Changing these intersecting social systems takes time and requires collaboration among government\, non-profit organizations and citizen volunteers. \nHow do we get there? The program will be held in the Jefferson Center space\, suite 101\, in the Old Armory Building\, 208 Oak St.\, in Ashland. Light refreshments will be served. This event is free and open to the public. If you have questions\, please contact Tony Davis (tonydavis0@ gmail.com).

SUMMARY:Genocide\, Congress\, and the new President: Medea Benjamin
DESCRIPTION:Each new week brings new calamities for Palestinians and for people in the countries neighboring Israel\, as its leaders try to bomb their way to the promised land of an ever-expanding Greater Israel. \nThis is a hybrid event. Join us in person with Medea Benjamin at CCB’s Lothrop Auditorium or join us on Zoom or on Community Church’s YouTube channel. \nIn northern Gaza\, Israel appears to be launching its “Generals’ Plan” to drive the most devastated and traumatized 2.2 million people in the world into the southern half of their open-air prison. \nBernie Sanders has filed six Joint Resolutions of Disapproval to stop sending taxpayer-funded US weapons to Israel\, which it is using to commit war crimes.  Senators Warren and Markey have not yet indicated their support.  Medea Benjamin has been tirelessly working the halls of Congress and will bring us an up to date assessment of the struggle over US backing for Israel’s wars. \nA new president will\, we hope\, have been chosen by the time of our event and Medea will also share her observations on the election results. \nMedea Benjamin is co-founder of CodePink: Women for Peace\, one of the nation’s leading peace and justice organizations. \nSponsored by MAPA Education Fund and Community Church of Boston.  Donations to Community Church will be appreciated. \nJoin us in person with Medea Benjamin at CCB’s Lothrop Auditorium or join us on Zoom or on Community Church’s YouTube channel. \nWhile in Massachusetts\, Benjamin will also speak at Northampton Friends Meeting on Friday\, Nov. 8\, at 6:30 pm\, and at the Wayland Mosque for a Justice for All benefit dinner\, Saturday\, Nov. 9\, at 5:30 pm.

SUMMARY:SOCAN: How Climate Change is Impacting Oregon Farmers
DESCRIPTION:Southern Oregon farmers exist on the frontlines of climate change. This is because the variables of seasonal temperature and water availability are both dominant factors influencing crop viability and success and are also the primary variables influenced by global warming and its climate change consequences. \nMaud Powell\, with OSU Extension’s Southern Oregon Office in Central Points serves as Associate Professor of Practice in the Small Farms Program. SOCAN’s October monthly general meeting at the Medford Public Library on October 29 from 6:00 – 7:30 will feature a presentation by Maud that explores the impacts of climate change on farmers and ranchers in Southern Oregon\, especially related to their mental health and emotional well-being\, and an Oregon State University Initiative\, ‘Climate Stress and Grief: Building Resilience in Farmers and Ranchers’ that is addressing these concerns. Powell will also share initial findings from qualitative research conducted with Oregon farmers.

SUMMARY:Reshaping our Malfunctioning World – Change is in the Air
DESCRIPTION:A webinar to tackle head-on some of the troubling questions raised by the virtual impotence of the UN in the face of terrible wars\, senseless\, bloodshed and war crimes. Similarly\, with the almost complete disregard of international law by governments right across the spectrum. \nThis is an international event. Please note the very early morning time for the Pacific Time region. \nWhat we’re focusing on is: where to from here? What might be promising new approaches\, new ideas\, new initiatives – ways of reforming the UN system. \nThe webinar brings together a diverse and uniquely equipped group of intellectuals and practitioners for a lively\, thought-provoking\, even provocative conversation. \nFollowing the four presentations we will distil a strategic direction for future engagement with the focus on concrete initiatives that SHAPE\, together with other civil society organizations and perhaps some like-minded governments and international agencies\, can pursue in coming months and beyond. \nWe want to spell out a new direction\, but also point to the steps needed along the way. How do we create the necessary momentum for change? Where can we expect leadership to come from? What energies and resources can be brought to bear on such an enterprise? \nWe are delighted that Dr Grace Pandor will be a key contributor to this discussion. \nDr. Pandor is a remarkable South African educator\, academic and politician. She served as  South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation 2019-2024 and led the country’s historic genocide case of December 2023 brought against Israel in the International Court of Justice; she was an ANC MP since majority rule in 1994\, and held several ministerial responsibilities. She was responsible for a complete overhaul of the nation’s education system. \nAdditional speakers include: \nRichard Falk\, Grace Naledi Pandor\, Hans von Sponeck\, and Vijay Prashad. \nRegister Here \n

SUMMARY:Solutions & Action Steps Ashland
DESCRIPTION:Solutions and Action Steps for Unhoused Ashland \nSouthern Oregon Housing for All (SOHFA) opens a community discussion \nASHLAND – Winter is approaching\, so it is critical that Ashland moves forward on plans and actions to provide shelter and services for the city’s unhoused population. Southern Oregon Housing for All (SOHFA)\, a local organization of volunteers\, advocates\, and unhoused Ashlanders invites the community to a welcoming and inclusive conversation focused on setting priorities to solve gaps in our homeless services. \nThe conversation will be held Thursday\, October 3\, 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Gresham Room at the Ashland Public Library. \nThe City of Ashland commissioned a Homeless Master Plan this year that identified action steps to further the goal of finding housing solutions for all. “It’s time to take some of those steps\,” said Rich Rohde\, a SOHFA member. “What can we do right now? And how do we make it happen?” \nSOFHA is an organization of volunteers\, advocates\, and unhoused folks who encourage dialogue\, communications and discussion focused on finding housing solutions for all.

SUMMARY:Online forum on the Jackson County Deflection Program Sept 26
DESCRIPTION:A comprehensive treatment-centered approach \nIn November 2020\, Oregon voters passed Ballot Measure 110. \nIt decriminalized use or possession of small amounts of specific drugs that included heroin\,\nmethamphetamine\, oxycodone and others. Measure 110 had problems due to lack of resources\nand other issues. \nIn response to public backlash\, Measure 110 was amended by Oregon House Bill 4002 in 2024.\nHB 4002 repealed the drug decriminalization portion of Measure 110\, however\, it included a\nnumber of provisions to better address the state’s addiction crisis\, including “deflection”\nprograms. \nJackson County has opted to create a deflection program. \nAs our Representative Pam Marsh has stated\, the Deflection Program “will provide individuals\nwho are found with possession with multiple pathways to connect with treatment and avoid\nlong term legal consequences\, including jail or a criminal record.” \nThe deflection program is currently being created and will go into effect October 7\, 2024.\nTo find out what to expect\, we invite you to an online public forum joining legislators\, health\nproviders and law enforcement officials (see attachment). Bring your questions!
