SUMMARY:Julie Mathison talks about the pros and cons of traditional and indie publishing
DESCRIPTION:Monday July 29th  7:00 to 8:00 pm\n\n\nAward-winning indie author Julie Mathison came to independent publishing after years of pursuing the traditional dream\, securing a top agent\, making the rounds to the “Big Five” of New York publishing houses ~ and ultimately relinquishing that dream for the path less traveled. In an age that increasingly celebrates minority voices\, she has become passionate about the kind of diversity pioneered by small\, micro\, and author presses\, one based on artistic identity ~ a diversity of content\, voice\, and sensibility. This talk will be an exploration of lessons learned from the journey through both worlds. It will examine the pros and cons of the traditional and indie publishing paradigms and will probe how the marketplace shapes our shared literary canon. The author will invite questions\, anecdotes\, and participation from the audience\, writers and readers alike.

SUMMARY:The Nicaraguan Revolution 45 Years On: Global Solidarity in a Changing World
DESCRIPTION:Sat 20 Jul 2024 2:00 PM – 4:30 PM BST\nMarx Memorial Library\, EC1R 0DU \n“We see youth in North America rising up in protest\, the condemnation of the genocide that is being committed against the Palestinian people. The protests are multiplying not only in North America\, but in every country of our planet. The rulers…are unmasking themselves.” – Daniel Ortega\, 30 April 2024 \nOn 19 July\, as Nicaragua celebrates the 45th anniversary of the Sandinista Revolution\, a reconfiguration of global power is playing out as rage escalates internationally at the genocide being committed in Gaza with arms and political support from the US\, UK\, EU and other allies. \nIn this emerging multipolar world\, voices of the South are being raised as one against US efforts to dominate and force other countries to follow its will. \nProgressive governments across Latin America and Africa are united in their condemnation of US efforts to flout international law and to impose illegal coercive measures (sanctions) on countries who fail to submit to their control. \nThis meeting will celebrate Nicaragua’s achievements and look at the country’s support for Palestine in the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Speakers will also examine how unity of the South has such an important role to play in securing peace and justice for all and an end to US efforts at control and domination. \nSpeakers: \nHis Excellency Dr Carlos Arguello\, Nicaraguan Ambassador to the Netherlands and Nicaragua’s representative to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). \nHer Excellency Ismara Mercedes Vargas Walter\, Cuban Ambassador to the UK \nRuby Cox\, Member of the NSCAG Executive Committee \nChair: Roger McKenzie\, International Editor of the Morning Star \nWe are hoping that it will be possible during the meeting to show some video footage of the Nicaraguan anniversary celebrations on 19 July.

SUMMARY:Volunteer Orientation on July 9th for Cooling and Smoke Shelters
DESCRIPTION:The City of Ashland and Joy of Volunteering\, a new organization working to support Ashland’s unhoused community\, will host an orientation July 9 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at 2200 Ashland Street behind Oil Stop. \nThe group is looking for volunteers that would like to support our unhoused friends and neighbors with compassion\, clear communication\, an open heart\, and strong personal boundaries. \n“We need people to host this summer’s cooling and smoke shelters\, to provide meals and snacks\, and to offer transportation\,” wrote Avram Sacks\, who will facilitate the orientation. \nThe Cooling Shelters will be called when the temperature is predicted to go above 95 degrees and will usually run from noon to 7PM. The smoke shelters will be called when the smoke level rises above 150\, and will stay open until the smoke drops below 150. Hosts will be needed for daytime and overnight shifts. \nProviding transportation for folks from downtown to 2200 Ashland Street in excessive heat or smoke can really make a huge difference. Most unhoused people carry their belongings with them. It could be quite challenging to walk that distance when they might already be suffering from dehydration or exhaustion. \nThose who like to prepare food could offer smoothies\, watermelon\, snacks or a light meal. Many more people come to the shelters when they know that food will be provided. \nDetailed job descriptions will be given at the orientation: Tuesday\, July 9th\, from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at 2200 Ashland St.\, Ashland. \nFor more information\, please contact Avram at 541-220-7307.

SUMMARY:Uncovering Difficult Truths: The Place We Make
DESCRIPTION:Ashland Sunrise Project presents a conversation with Oregon author Sarah L. Sanderson\, Taylor Stewart\, founder of the Oregon Remembrance Project\, and host Tara Houston\, Community and Engagement Manager\, Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF). \nSara Sanderson\, author of The Place We Make: Breaking the Legacy of Legalized Hate\, will share her own story of discovering that her ancestors participated in exiling Jacob Vanderpool from Oregon City in 1851 under the exclusion laws that prevented Black people from residing in Oregon. Taylor and Sara will explore what we might gain from uncovering difficult truths\, including difficult truths about what has happened in the past and how we might transform those challenges into opportunities for a new kind of future. \nThere will be an opportunity to buy a copy of Sarah Sanderson’s book at the event\, or in advance from Bloomsbury Books. \nThis program was made possible in part by a grant from Oregon Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities. SUMMARY:Dreams Have No Borders: Varsity Theater
DESCRIPTION:Dreams Have No Borders \nTWO SHOWINGS AT THE VARSITY THEATRE \nSaturday\, June 22\, 7:30-9:30 PM \nSunday\, June 23\, 3:00-5:00 PM \nVarsity Theatre\, 166 E Main St\, Ashland \n“Dreams Have No Borders\,” a deeply moving opera-turned-film based on over a year of interviews\, story collection\, and immersion in the lives of Latino immigrants in the Rogue Valley\, tells the timely story of a young mother’s harrowing journey to cross the border with her baby to find safety with her sister in the USA. Although the opera addresses the often harrowing\, real-world challenges faced by asylum seekers—including cartel violence—the core of the story is the love between two sisters divided by a border\, and the piece carries a hopeful\, uplifting\, and human tone. \nWritten by local creators Ethan Gans-Morse and Tiziana DellaRovere and produced by the local nonprofit Anima Mundi Productions\, the film features three Grammy-winning singers\, the Delgani String Quartet (called “the state’s finest chamber ensemble” by Oregon ArtsWatch)\, the Teokalli Aztec Dancers\, stage direction by Valerie Rachelle (Oregon Cabaret)\, and film direction by 3-time Emmy award winning filmmaker Jan Thompson. \nWatch a 2-minute video trailer and order tickets at www.HumanityTickets.com \nOr call 541-833-3066 \nNote that tickets are sold by Anima Mundi Productions\, NOT the Varsity Theatre.

SUMMARY:Where the Olive Trees Weep
DESCRIPTION:Jewish Voice for Peace invites you to a premiere screening of  “Where the Olive Trees Weep” on June 20 at the Varsity Theater. A suggested donation of $10 or two for $15 will be accepted at the door. \nJewish Voice for Peace Rogue Valley is committed to helping to educate our Community. about the origins and roots of the Palestine/Israel conflict. \nOur goal is to shed light on the brutal\, 75-year occupation of Palestine\, the 16-year blockade of Gaza\, and the true nature of Israel as an apartheid State. \nOur mass media\, unfortunately\, often portrays Israel as the victim\, a nation under attack from violent\, barbaric\, and anti-Semitic Arab terrorists. Where the Olive Trees Weep explores the trauma and pain that Palestinians experience under occupation\, and the beauty and resilience of the Palestinian people as they struggle to heal themselves and continue in their quest for Freedom\, Justice\, and Equality. \nThe screening coincides with 21 Days of Conversation about the film and its implications. SUMMARY:Emergency Forum with Israeli Conscientious Objector Yuval Dag
DESCRIPTION:On March 20\, 2023\, Yuval Dag refused his military conscription and was sent by an Israeli military court to prison. \nAfter growing up with a nationalist identity\, Yuval began to question his privilege and how it was maintained through the oppression of Palestinians. “Resistance begins\, first of all\, with self-reflection and understanding. With the understanding that by wearing a uniform and symbols of a certain body\, you choose to represent that body. With the understanding that enlisting in the army is a political choice\, and its meaning is to support the military and political agenda\, and to take part in it. The understanding that even a small cog contributes to the system’s function.” \nYuval decided that he could not in good conscientious accept his military conscription. He spent two months in prison for his refusal to serve and today works with the Israeli Refusers Solidarity Network to support other Israeli Jewish Refusniks. \nJoin us for an urgent and important conversation with Yuval hosted by Ariel Gold of Fellowship of Reconciliation and Diana Oestrich of Red Letter Christians. \ \nRegister for this Zoom Event here.

SUMMARY:First We Bombed New Mexico: Free Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:From May 17 to 19\, a special screening of a new documentary\, “First We Bombed New Mexico\,” will be available online. It tells the tragic story of the many “downwinders” whose health was adversely affected by the fallout from the July 1945 Trinity nuclear test and their betrayal by the U.S. government. \nIn particular\, thousands of New Mexicans—mostly Hispanic and Native American—were exposed to catastrophic levels of radioactive fallout\, never warned\, never acknowledged and never helped afterwards. \nYou can easily watch this film on your phone\, iPad\, laptop\, or desktop by registering here. \nAlongside this special screening is a panel discussion with the filmmakers and a bipartisan group of members of Congress who are fighting to address this wrong. \nThey are pushing legislation to expand and extend the Radiation Effects Compensation Act (RECA) to include Trinity downwinders and other communities. \nThis is an urgent and timely issue.  \nAs you may have read in Arms Control Today\, RECA will expire June 7\, 2024\, unless these advocates win Congressional approval to extend it.

SUMMARY:Two Friends\, Two Books: Local Authors Lead Book Circle on Relationships
DESCRIPTION:In May\, two local authors will lead a free book circle that will explore how two recently released books can foster skills that can strengthen our relationships with our families\, lovers and communities. \nThe book circle — hosted by Southern Oregon Pachamama Alliance and Peace House — will meet at Peace House\, 543 S. Mountain Ave.\, Ashland\, Oregon from 7 to 8:30 pm four Wednesday evenings: May 1\, 8\, 15\, 22. The authors\, Diane Tegtmeier and Lauren J. Oliver\, will also read from their respective books at 7 p.m. Monday\, May 20\, at Bloomsbury Books\, 290 E. Main Street\, Ashland\, OR 97520\, 541-488-0009. \n \nThe authors\, who are friends\, discovered through their conversations\, that while their recently finished books were very different in some respects\, the principles behind the books are intriguingly complementary. Tegtmeier’s book\, “The Sacred Cell: What Nature Teaches Us About Relationships\,” presents the Cell Membrane principles of oneness\, differentiation\, selective permeability\, containment\, and the relationship field. Oliver’s book\, “CircleCulture: Tools for Cooperative Work\,” offers methods for building strong\, healthy relationships by connecting our hearts and minds while communicating respectfully with others in Circle.
