DESCRIPTION:On March 20\, 2023\, Yuval Dag refused his military conscription and was sent by an Israeli military court to prison. \nAfter growing up with a nationalist identity\, Yuval began to question his privilege and how it was maintained through the oppression of Palestinians. “Resistance begins\, first of all\, with self-reflection and understanding. With the understanding that by wearing a uniform and symbols of a certain body\, you choose to represent that body. With the understanding that enlisting in the army is a political choice\, and its meaning is to support the military and political agenda\, and to take part in it. The understanding that even a small cog contributes to the system’s function.” \nYuval decided that he could not in good conscientious accept his military conscription. DESCRIPTION:From May 17 to 19\, a special screening of a new documentary\, “First We Bombed New Mexico\,” will be available online. It tells the tragic story of the many “downwinders” whose health was adversely affected by the fallout from the July 1945 Trinity nuclear test and their betrayal by the U.S. government. \nIn particular\, thousands of New Mexicans—mostly Hispanic and Native American—were exposed to catastrophic levels of radioactive fallout\, never warned\, never acknowledged and never helped afterwards. \nYou can easily watch this film on your phone\, iPad\, laptop\, or desktop by registering here. \nAlongside this special screening is a panel discussion with the filmmakers and a bipartisan group of members of Congress who are fighting to address this wrong. \nThey are pushing legislation to expand and extend the Radiation Effects Compensation Act (RECA) to include Trinity downwinders and other communities. \nThis is an urgent and timely issue.  \nAs you may have read in Arms Control Today\, RECA will expire June 7\, 2024\, unless these advocates win Congressional approval to extend it.

SUMMARY:How the Climate Crises are Affecting Our Mental Health & What Can We Do About it?
DESCRIPTION:From Southern Oregon Climate Action Now: \nPresentation by Rev. Liz Olson\, M.Div. BCC (Masters of Divinity\, Board Certified Chaplain) \nThe climate chaos that surrounds us is affecting much more than the natural world\, our economy and our physical health. The changing climate and our apparent resistance to addressing it are also conspiring to affect our mental and psychological health. Rev. Liz Olson serves as a Specialty Chaplain with the in-patient Palliative Care team at Providence Medford Medical Center. With Ken Deveney\, Liz has\, for many years\, led gatherings of SOCAN’s monthly support group ‘Sustaining Climate Activists.’ \nLiz has been speaking nationally on how chaplains can play a role in supporting people and communities to cope with the psychological\, emotional and existential needs that are arising as we are experiencing the different impacts of climate crises. At the Association of Professional Chaplains annual conference in Houston\, TX\, Liz was the first chaplain to present on this topic at such a meeting. Liz was also instrumental in an online webinar produced by Chaplaincy Innovation Lab (Brandeis University) in collaboration with The BTS Center – (supporting “spiritual leadership for a climate-changed world”) \nDuring her presentation\, Liz will discuss why we should be concerned about our mental health as it pertains to climate change considering direct and indirect effects and differences among populations\, particularly people of color\, Indigenous communities and youth. During the second half of the program\, Liz will lead us through some interactive exercises that SOCAN’s support group “Sustaining Climate Activists” uses. \nSOCAN meets monthly in person with speakers on Topics related to climate change. \nThese meetings are free and open to the public. SUMMARY:State of the Free Press 2024: The Importance of an Independent Press and Critical Media Literacy in a “Post-Truth” World
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, April 17th 7:00 PM\nRogue Valley Metaphysical Library – 1757 Ashland St\, Ashland. \nIn the age of new and powerful tools of communication\, democracy has become more fragile and vulnerable to attacks by ideological extremists and partisans. \nWhat is clear is that the tools of communication\, culture\, literacy\, and critical thinking are more crucial than ever in creating both informed citizens and maintaining a substantive democracy. \nSTATE OF THE FREE PRESS 2024 comes at a time when trust in the media is at an all-time low. A 2022 Gallup poll found that just one in nine Americans had confidence in TV news\, and fewer than one in six believed in the printed press. A subsequent survey revealed that no fewer than half of Americans believe national news organizations intentionally deceive the public in order to suit their own agendas. It’s a grim reality that threatens the public’s ability to hold the powerful to account and stifles access to the high-quality information that is the lifeblood of democracy. \nMICKEY HUFF is the director of Project Censored and president of the nonprofit Media Freedom Foundation. To date\, he has co-edited fourteen editions of the Project’s yearbook\, including\, most recently\, Project Censored’s State of the Free Press 2022\, with Andy Lee Roth. He is also co-author with Nolan Higdon of United States of Distraction and the critical thinking textbook Let’s Agree to Disagree. Huff received the Beverly Kees Educator Award as part of the 2019 James Madison Freedom of Information Award from the Society of Professional Journalists\, Northern California. \nHe is professor of social science\, history\, and journalism at Diablo Valley College\, where he co-chairs the history program and is chair of the Journalism Department. Huff is executive producer and host of The Project Censored Show\, a weekly syndicated public affairs program that airs on 50 stations across the U.S. on Pacifica Radio.

Fahed Abuakel was born in Kafr Yasif\, in the Galilee. He was ordained minister of the Presbyterian Church – USA in 1978 and in 2002 became the first Arab-American to lead a major U.S. denomination. \nHe has a BA from Southeastern University\, a Master of Divinity from Columbia Theological Seminary\, and a Doctor of Divinity from the McCormick Theological Seminary. He has served the Presbyterian Church in numerous executive capacities including: Moderator of its 214th General Assembly\, General Assembly Commissioner\, board member of the National Middle Eastern Ministries Committee\, and member of the Outreach\, Christian Education\, and Peacemaking Committees of the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta. SUMMARY:Benefit Concert for Unhoused Neighbors
DESCRIPTION:Since 2018\, Havurah Shir Hadash\, 185 N. Mountain\,Ashland\, has given homeless families the opportunity to park overnight in its parking lot.  To cover the expenses in offering this service\, there is a benefit concert on Saturday\, April 13\, 7-9pm.  Performers include ANAN Gaelic Choir under the direction of Pat O’Scannel\, singer/songwriter Gene Burnett and folk singer Daniel Jokelson.  Cost is a $20 donation at the door.  Snacks and drinks will be available for purchase.\n\n\nThe ANAM Gaelic Choir was founded in December\, 2022 by Pat O’Scannell\, director of MUSICA MATRIX. The  vocal ensemble presents songs in Irish Gaelic learned by ear from director O’Scannell\, who has sung for over 30 years in the Irish language. Her efforts are both in preserving Irish culture through its language and music\, and also to honor her own heritage\, and grandfather who came from Tralee in County Kerry\, Ireland.\n\nANAM will sing a variety of traditional Irish songs in what is referred to as ‘sean nos’ style\, which\, simply stated\, means traditional.  The songs are sung unaccompanied\, or to a drone. Other instruments such as the shruti box\, whistle\, guitar and bodhran will be included.  The songs speak of rural Irish origins with herding songs\, spinning songs\, shearing songs\, love songs and songs mourning the passing of life. The single line melodies are lyrical and poignant\, with rich nuance of ornamentation and the subtle bending of tone and inflection giving it its identifiable sound.\n\nBurnett\, who calls himself “an acoustic troubadour singing heartfelt songs for thinking people”\, has written over 800 songs.  Covering a wide range of topics and styles\, his songs explore the ecology of human relationships based on the Taoist idea of using less force and following an inner sense of rightness.  Burnett’s performances are funny and serious\, cynical and tender-hearted\, sweet and edgy\, emotional and intellectual.  Find out more about Burnett at  http://www.geneburnett.com/\n\nOriginally from Berkeley\, musician and actor/improviser Jokelson has lived in Ashland for the last 16 years.  Jokelson’s music incorporates the sounds of the folk singers\, pop songs and musicals he grew up as well as Americana and world music.  His original songs speak to the personal — the range of relationships and experiences that illuminate and change us.\n\nSince 2018\, Havurah Shir Hadash has helped over 50 families gain stability by offering a safe place to park their RVs and vehicles. The parking lot can accommodate three vehicles a night.  In addition to a place to park\, members of the congregation have helped families find the resources needed to find permanent housing.

SUMMARY:Why We Are Beaver Believers
DESCRIPTION:Besides serving as the state animal\, and the OSU emblem\, Beavers are incredibly valuable components of our natural and managed ecosystems. This is becoming especially evident as climate change compromises water supplies across the landscape. Unfortunately\, beavers can also become a menace for some forest and agricultural operations. As a result\, they have become the subject of meaningful legislation over the last two sessions in Salem\, firstly to provide them some protection and secondly to help landowners learn how to coexist with them. \nDuring SOCCAN’s March open public meeting on Tuesday March 26th\, Jakob Shockey\, founder and Executive Director of Project Beaver will deliver a presentation on Beaver during which he will offer an introduction to the beavers\, followed by a discussion of how they build habitat resilience and water security in the face of climate change. Jakob will round out with a discussion of the challenges they face and ways folks can help. \nThe program is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:People of African descent have lived and worked in Oregon since before the founding of the earliest English-speaking settlements in the Americas. Despite this\, the popular narrative of our state’s history excludes the experiences of African Americans before the mid-20th century. This erasure is the result of historic legal and social marginalization that contributes to the ignorance of Oregon’s Black heritage\, as well as influences contemporary disparities in housing access\, community investment\, and policing.
