SUMMARY:Four Week Online Course: Unwelcomed – Oregon’s History of Exclusion
DESCRIPTION:Ashland Together\, in collaboration with Peace House and BASE is proud to present “Unwelcomed: Understanding Oregon’s History Exclusion.” This 4-week online course is led by Portland State University Professor Kristin Teigen. \nProfessor Teigen will take us through the deliberate steps taken to construct Oregon\, first as a territory and later as a state\, to exclude non-white people. \nWoven into each week\, we will discuss Southern Oregon’s specific history with regard to race. \nRegister Here \nWeek 1: Exclusions\, Genocide\, Segregation\, and Deportation \nBeginning with the construct of race\, we then embark on a journey through Oregon’s complex and often troubling history. Who was in Oregon before it became a state? What led to its founding? Dive deep into the origins of hate groups like the KKK and investigate discriminatory policies such as the Chinese Exclusion Act. Understand how Oregon’s history is marred by acts of deportation\, exclusion\, and even genocide. \nWeek 2: Displacement and the Arrival of Immigrants \nMoving from the origin of Oregon\, we will travel into the early 20th century to examine the creation of segregation and systems of displacement\, the arrival of immigrant groups\, and we will set the stage for the transformation of World War II. \nWeek 3: World War II and Its Aftermath \nThe third week takes us to a critical period: World War II and its enduring impact on Oregon. Explore the devastating effects of Japanese internment camps\, Latinx deportations\, the creation of Vanport and more\, and the practice of redlining\, all of which continue to shape Oregon’s communities today.\nWeek 4: The “Golden Age” and Modern Day \nThe 1950’s\, the supposed Golden Age of the U.S. brought dramatic transformations\, particularly with Indigenous communities\, displacements within Black communities\, the aftermath of internment and continued deportations. Moving into modern-day Oregon\, we will look at how the past has created the realities of our day-to-day lives and the continuing struggle for justice. \nCourse Details: \nWhen: Every Thursday beginning February 1st\nTime: 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm PT\nPlatform: Zoom (link will be provided on the day of each class)\nCost: $90\nCapacity: Limited to 35 participants \nThis course emphasizes active participation\, open dialogue\, and is designed to be a safe space for all attendees. \nPlease write to ashlandtogether@gmail.com for information regarding full or partial scholarships. \nUnwelcomed: Understanding the Racist History of Oregon is sponsored by our partners: Peace House\, BASE–Black Alliance and Social Empowerment\, and Rogue Valley Unitatian Universalist Fellowship. 50% of all proceeds will be donated to BASE \nInstructor: Kristin Teigen\, MA\, M.Ed. is an educator at Portland State University\, where she teaches the history of BIPOC communities in Oregon and issues of women’s homelessness. She’s also an anti-oppression activist\, working in feminist\, queer\, environmental justice and people of color movements\, and a trained anti-oppression facilitator

Youth in all these programs receive in-depth mentoring every week\, or at least four hours per month. \nThe next Mentoring Essentials Training will be January 19th from 6p-9p\, and January 20th from 9a-5p.  You must attend both days of training to complete it. \nRegister Here: Mentor Application \nThe training will take place at the RVM Nature Center\, 2931 S Pacific Hwy\, Medford\, OR 97501. \n*Follow signs to ‘Nature Center’ after entering Lithia & Driveway Fields. \nTraining Details: Our Mentoring Essentials Training is free for those who commit to volunteering with RVM for at least a year after completing it. There is a $150 fee to take the training without becoming a volunteer. \nThe training covers strength-based communication\, trauma-informed care\, youth development\, active listening\, and avoiding bias; it also gives scenarios in small groups to practice the skills learned. \nWe are always receiving new applications from youth hoping for mentors.  We serve any youth in Jackson County between the ages of 9 and 24 years; most of our mentees are in middle- or high- school. Mentors are matched with youth who have similar interests; our Matches go hiking\, see movies\, play sports\, check out local art\, and more! \nThe volunteer schedule is flexible for 1:1 Matches\, and agreed upon by volunteer mentors and their mentee’s family: you can make a big impact in just 6-10 hours per month! \nWe offer a $50 monthly stipend to volunteers in an active 1:1 Match\, or Circle / Program\, monthly support via Zoom meeting with our staff and other volunteers\, and free\, quarterly\, in-person trainings with all our volunteers

SUMMARY:FREE Two-Hour Webinar: The Seeds of a White Utopia
DESCRIPTION:On January 11\, Ashland Together invites you to join Portland State University history professor Kristin Teigen for a free\, two hour webinar examining Oregon’s difficult racial past. The event will serve as an introductory session in the lead up to a four week\, online course titled “Unwelcomed: Oregon’s History of Exclusion” beginning February 1st. \nThe goal of this 2 hour webinar is to better understand our state’s largely unexamined history of discrimination. How did a rebellion in the 1600’s and the Missouri Compromise of 1820 set the stage for Oregon as ‘whites only’ territory\, and later\, a state? From land grabs to redlining to genocide\, countless moments of our history would influence people in Oregon for generations to come. \nRegister and find out more about this event on Ashland Together’s Event Page. \nInstructor: Kristin Teigen\, Portland State University

SUMMARY:The Abundance Swap
DESCRIPTION:What is the Abundance Swap? \nIt is a community gathering to celebrate our abundance and offer an alternative to the Holiday shopping season. \nConsider that: \n\nFirst thing on the morning after Thanksgiving\, millions of Americans line up in the dark outside big-box chain stores to be the first to swarm over billions of dollars of stuff – brand new stuff\, created with new resources from the Earth\nOne nation accounts for 5% of the population and 40-50% of the resource consumption of the planet. Guess which.\nSome of the good stuff we already have isn’t being well used or fully enjoyed.\nGiving gifts for the holidays is fun. Most of us want to continue giving gifts.\n\nSo We’re doing it differently\, like this: \nStep 1.  Find 3 quality items in your home\, shop or office that someone would enjoy as a gift… fun\, useful\, interesting or beautiful items in really good shape that you feel  you can spare . \n(“Quality” doesn’t mean “expensive”. It means well-made\, worthwhile\, likely to be valued. The original price doesn’t matter). \nStep 2.  Bring them to the Historic Ashland Armory. Don’t just drop your stuff off. We’re doing more than that. Bring the present of your presence. Stick around to visit\, tell a story or two about what you brought to the person who wants it\, and find some things that you’d like to take away to give as gifts to others (a gift to yourself is ok\, too). There won’t be any bargaining; you just bring what you’re ready to give away and take away whatever you’d like. \nStep 3.  Then use the gifts you take home to reduce your new gift purchases. \nThree simple steps\, that’s it. This will be our own Holiday shopping event\, a round of giving and receiving that includes no money and no new demands on resources. For some of us it may also be a stretching exercise – a chance to let go of stuff\, or let go of worries that we might not get back “our fair share”\, or more fully let go of commercially-planted ideas that it’s not a real gift if it’s not shiny & new from the store. \nWe’ll have tea and simple treats to eat; bring a tasty sweet finger food to share if you’d like.
