DESCRIPTION:Submitted by Oregon Peace Works \nAs terrible wars continue in Ukraine\, Gaza\, and elsewhere\, those of us trying to stop them are up against a powerful military-industrial-media complex in the United States. No matter how much coverage of war comes through mainstream news outlets\, the human realities of war are scarcely conveyed. We face the continuing challenge to break through the fog of war propaganda and indifference to effectively challenge the abstractions and evasions that undergird the warfare state here at home. \nOn April 2nd\, the RootsAction Education Fund\, working with the Oregon organizations listed below\, is offering a live online presentation – “Make War Visible … and End It” – to antiwar and social justice activists. DESCRIPTION:Besides serving as the state animal\, and the OSU emblem\, Beavers are incredibly valuable components of our natural and managed ecosystems. This is becoming especially evident as climate change compromises water supplies across the landscape. Unfortunately\, beavers can also become a menace for some forest and agricultural operations. As a result\, they have become the subject of meaningful legislation over the last two sessions in Salem\, firstly to provide them some protection and secondly to help landowners learn how to coexist with them. \nDuring SOCCAN’s March open public meeting on Tuesday March 26th\, Jakob Shockey\, founder and Executive Director of Project Beaver will deliver a presentation on Beaver during which he will offer an introduction to the beavers\, followed by a discussion of how they build habitat resilience and water security in the face of climate change. Jakob will round out with a discussion of the challenges they face and ways folks can help. \nThe program is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:People of African descent have lived and worked in Oregon since before the founding of the earliest English-speaking settlements in the Americas. Despite this\, the popular narrative of our state’s history excludes the experiences of African Americans before the mid-20th century. This erasure is the result of historic legal and social marginalization that contributes to the ignorance of Oregon’s Black heritage\, as well as influences contemporary disparities in housing access\, community investment\, and policing. Author Rivera Sun and youth facilitator Savanna Holden are co-facilitating a special intergenerational book club on The Crown of Light. \nThe novel is a part of the award-winning Ari Ara Series and tells the story of a nonviolent Peace Force that halts violence and stops war in the border region between two feuding nations. Author Rivera Sun and youth facilitator Savanna Holden are co-facilitating a special intergenerational book club on The Crown of Light. \nThe novel is a part of the award-winning Ari Ara Series and tells the story of a nonviolent Peace Force that halts violence and stops war in the border region between two feuding nations. Note: You do not need to have read the other books in the series. This story stands alone. \nReaders age 11 and up will enjoy this book group. This story features a 14-year-old heroine and an intergenerational group of friends. \nWith readers of all ages\, this book group will have engaging conversations about the scenes of waging peace\, the characters’ commitment to nonviolence\, and the challenges they surmount. Discussion will be interspersed with real life examples\, trainings in the skills the characters are learning\, and some of the nonfiction stories that inspired the book. DESCRIPTION:U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley will hold a town hall meeting at 12:30 p.m. Sunday\, March 3\, at the Ashland High School gymnasium\, 201 S. Mountain Ave.\, Ashland. The event is open to anyone. \nIt’s part of a trio of Southern Oregon events intended to kick off Sen. Merkley’s 2024 Oregon town hall tour\, an annual event where he visits all 36 Oregon’s counties. The additional Southern Oregon town halls will be held in Douglas County at 5:30 p.m. Saturday\, March 2 at Umpqua Community College’s Southern Oregon Wine Institute\, and at 3:30 p.m. Sunday\, March 3\, at Rogue Community College’s Redwood Campus. \n“I hold a town hall for every Oregon county\, every year because there is simply no substitute to hearing directly from folks about the ideas and priorities that matter most to them and their communities\,” Merkley said in a press release.
