SUMMARY:SOCAN: Grateful Americana Benefit Bash
DESCRIPTION:From our friends at SOCAN: \nWhat about living in Southern Oregon makes us grateful? For some it’s the beautiful forests\, for\nsome the rivers and lakes\, for some the fishing or the coastal wonders\, and for some the winter\nrecreation or world class wines. All these local delights are threatened by climate change. It’s\ntime to support your friends in Southern Oregon Climate Action Now as they combat the threat\nthrough their campaign: ‘SOCAN: Reaching a new level of Climate Action.’ \nWe’ve been fighting and often winning for Oregon and the planet for over 11 years! How will you\nshow your appreciation? Please come to our fundraiser on November 11th to hear music from\ntwo top Rogue Valley bands and enjoy local wines and appetizers. Help SOCAN reach a new\nlevel of climate action. Steve Lavering and Mountaintop Sound open the evening with\nAmericana\, folk\, and a hint of bluegrass. Then\, Steve Schein and Shine On round it out with\nGrateful Dead covers and more Americana. Senator Jeff Golden will join us to say a few words.\nThere is no charge for admission but a donation is suggested. \nPlease plan to join us on November 11th for our fundraiser with bands Shine On and Mountaintop Sound\, wine and appetizers and social time with friends and climate activists.

SUMMARY:Bulletin of Atomic Scientists: Annual Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Bulletin Annual Gathering 2023: Keynote conversation with Christopher Nolan\nNovember 6\, 2023 | 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Central Time\nConnect with the Bulletin’s global supporters \nParticipate in high-level conversations \nEngage from the comfort of home \nFor our annual gathering\, Conversations Before Midnight (CBM) 2023\, we will remain virtual\, acknowledging that our audience is spread throughout the United States and around the world. This year we are thrilled to feature award-winning and Academy Award-nominated director Christopher Nolan as our keynote speaker. As with past gatherings\, we also will continue to provide unique access to high-level conversations with world-renowned experts on a variety of topics including nuclear risk\, climate change\, disruptive technologies like AI\, and biosecurity. \nFor those that have purchased Zoom room (“tables”) in the past\, we have a few exciting changes to enhance your experience. This year\, each attendee can select which conversation to join based on their area of interest\, rather than travel through the evening together as a table. Participants will still have the opportunity to ask questions of the experts\, who will be led in discussion by a seasoned moderator.  Then\, following these focused discussions\, your guests can return to your private Zoom room to share what they heard over the course of the evening. \nYou get the opportunity to interact with guests at your hosted table during the evening\, but you also join other groups in your topic of interest. Here are the dynamic conversations we have planned for you: \n\nHow black holes affect our map of the universe.\nPandemic Potential: What have we learned from Covid?\nWhy is the climate so extreme this year?\nFrom Oppenheimer to today’s nuclear landscape.\nPandora? Prometheus? What to make of recent breakthroughs in Artificial Intelligence.

SUMMARY:‘Israelism’ at Varsity Theater Friday
DESCRIPTION:We at Jewish Voice for Peace are deeply saddened and horrified by the cruelty and disregard for human life shown by Hamas in their attack on Israel. There can be no justification for their actions. Neither is there justification for Israel’s relentless and indiscriminate bombing of 2 million Palestinians. We call for an immediate  cessation of hostilities\, the release of all hostages\, and the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza. \nIn the midst of this situation\, we are showing a film at the VarsityTheatre that challenges the equation that loving Judaism means unquestioning support of Israeli foreign policy. It questions the proposition that criticizing Israel is somehow anti-Semitic. It is precisely because we love both Judaism and Israel that we feel it is so important to challenge the policies of both Israel and the United States that have brought us to this tragic moment. \nThe film ‘ISRAELISM’ will be shown at the Varsity Theatre October 27th at 4:00 p.m. \nTen years in the making\, this award winning documentary follows two young American Jews with strong emotional attachments to Israel and how their attitudes and beliefs begin to transform as they spend time In Israel and Palestine. They witness the harsh conditions in the West Bank under Israeli occupation and begin to challenge Israel to follow the Jewish ethics and values they hold dear. \nFollowing the film\, there will be a Q&A with one of the filmmakers. We are asking for an $8 donation at the door. \nEveryone is welcome! For more information\, please contact Avram at avramsacks@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Answering the Call: October 15
DESCRIPTION:What work is the universe asking of us at this time? What work is the Earth asking of us at this time? What work are the other species asking of us at this time? What work are the youth asking of us at this time? What work are the future generations of humans asking of us? What work are our hearts asking of us?”  -–Matthew Fox \n  \nWe can discover our own unique contribution to life and to the Earth by listening to what is calling each of us at this moment of “meta-crisis” on the planet. In this daylong we will draw upon teachings and practices from spiritual teachers and psychologists\, share songs and poetry\, and use journaling and discussion to explore how to answer our call to make a positive difference with our life in a way that is deeply fulfilling. As Howard Thurman puts it\, “Ask what makes you come alive then go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” We invite you to join with others around the world to listen and come alive in answer to Earth’s call. \n  \nWorkshop Leaders \nShoshana Alexander\, MA\, is an author\, teacher\, developmental editor\, playwright\, actor\, and mother\, and in all roles has tried to make a positive difference for the Earth. She is the author of several books\, including In Praise of Single Parents and Women’s Ventures/Women’s Visions\, and is co-author of Awakening Joy with James Baraz. SUMMARY:Oppenheimer’s Dilemma: Sunday October 8
DESCRIPTION:“Now I am become death\, the destroyer of worlds\,” quoted Robert Oppenheimer years after leading development of the atomic bomb. \nWill someone in the future say the same thing about genetic engineering\, artificial intelligence\, geoengineering\, or some other 21st century technology? \nThe Jefferson Center invites members and guests to discuss these ideas on the from 4 to 6 pm on Sunday\, October 8\, in The Jefferson Center in the Old Ashland Armory. \nIn the mid 20th century\, invention\, development and use of nuclear weapons reminded the world of moral and ethical implications of scientific and technological development. \nIn this salon\, we’ll discuss the responsibilities of those who create new and\ntransformational technology? Who is responsible to ensure responsible use of\ntechnology? Is it us? \nThe Jefferson Center invites you to join a discussion of these questions. This event is part of the Salon series of The Jefferson Center\, a Rogue Valley non-profit focused on critical thinking using secular humanist values to understand and engage with issues important to our community. See https:thejeffcenter.org for more details on this and other events.

The Third Harmony tells the story of nonviolence\, humanity’s greatest (and most overlooked) resource. As per Joanna Macy\, “I am exhilarated and grateful to the filmmakers for bringing forth such a fine gift for the future of life on Earth. Hurray! and deep bows.” \nRegister Here \nAbout the Film: Drawing on interviews with veteran activists like Civil Rights leader Bernard Lafayette\, scientists like behaviorist Frans de Waal and neuroscientist Marco Iacoboni\, Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal\, political scientist Erica Chenoweth\, futurist Elisabet Sahtouris and others\, The Third Harmony tells the story of nonviolence\, the greatest overlooked resource in human experience. \nThe film also delves into the important role that nonviolence plays in the wider struggle to develop a new theory of human nature\, how every one of us can add to our personal growth and fulfillment while benefiting society through the use of this time-tested power. \nAbout the Nonviolence Study & Practice Affinity Group: We are a small group that studies nonviolence and finds ways to apply it in our lives and communities. Sometimes\, we attend a course together or explore a resource on the Pace e Bene website or YouTube page. Whether restorative circles\, divesting\, Soul of Nonviolence podcasts\, Nonviolence News\, nonviolence pledges\, Engaging Nonviolence etc\, there’s a lot to put into practice!
