SUMMARY:Bloomsbury Events: Awaken to Abuse & Begin to Heal Your Life
DESCRIPTION:Whether we can bring ourselves to admit it or not\, many of us are experiencing or witnessing abuse and exploitation that’s being normalized in various aspects of our lives\, from family and friends\, society and culture\, in the workplace and within corporations\, government\, academia\, media\, military\, law enforcement\, religion\, etc. \nThis has resulted in varying degrees of trauma from the subtle and insidious to the more extreme that should be explored and healed as it affects how we see ourselves\, others and decisions for our future.  Join 7-times published author\, thought leader\, podcaster\, speaker\, and abuse survivor\, Karen Tate\, as she helps us peel back these layers so we might purge this harm from our lives and society and heal from the resulting trauma.  Karen is the author of Normalizing Abuse: A Commentary On Our Culture of Pervasive Abuse. \nSeptember 18 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm \nMonday September 18th 7 to 8 pm

SUMMARY:Bloomsbury Events: This Wild Life: Heroines in the History of Botany 1650-1850
DESCRIPTION:From encounters with pirates and historic earthquakes to visits from the Queen\, the women in these pages led amazing lives. Here are their stories\, that we may celebrate these women and their accomplishments. \nMonday September 11th 7 to 8 pm

SUMMARY:SOCAN: What’s Happening to our Douglas firs?
DESCRIPTION:Anyone spending time in the dryer forests of Southern Oregon will have seen the splashes of orange among the healthy green backdrop. These splashes of color portend our future; they represent Douglas firs that are expiring. As the trees die\, the needles lose the healthy green chlorophyll that drives photosynthesis and produce the familiar orange splashes that increasingly dot the skyline of our hills.Extension Forester\, OSU (retired) Max Bennett has been studying this phenomenon for some years. \nBennett will provide an account of his findings and conclusions during the next Southern Oregon Climate Action Now monthly open public meeting. The program will occur on Tuesday August 29 th at 6:00 pm at the Medford Public Library. The presentation is free and open to the public.

The relationship will support humanitarian aid and fundraising efforts within the Ashland community. The approved partnership authorized Mayor Tonya Graham to sign a Memorandum of Understanding that memorializes the relationship between Sviatohirs’k and Ashland and offers support amidst unimaginable suffering and dire conditions faced by our brothers and sisters of Ukraine. \nThe new sister city relationship will involve various reciprocal activities in education\, the arts and business\, such as exchange programs\, scholarships\, cultural events\, language training programs and potential business partnerships – Much like the relationship the City of Ashland has shared with their other sister city\, Guanajuato\, for over 50 years. However\, due to the devastation of Sviatohirs’k by Russian occupation in 2022\, the immediate goal will be to aid the new sister city. The Ashland–Sviatohirs’k Aid Project (ASAP) will be vital in this effort. \n“The city was 70% destroyed by the Russians\,” stated Ben Stott\, who has been leading the effort to form the new sister city relationship. “They were occupied for four months. When they (Russians) left\, they stole pretty much everything. They cleaned out the hospital. They just wiped out everything and stole it\, and so what we’re hoping to do through fundraising and public awareness is to help them rebuild the civic infrastructure so that they can get a working government again so people will start to move back to the city\,” Stott said. Graham added that she spoke with the Mayor of Sviatohirsk’s about the destruction of many parts of the Ukrainian city\, but the Ukrainian Mayor emphasized there is hope in the future of reciprocating the relationship with Ashland. But right now\, resources are needed.

SUMMARY:CULTIVATING WISDOM THROUGH HEALING ENGAGEMENT
DESCRIPTION:This event is Hosted by Nichol Chase and Notable Guests from the Lotus Institute. \nIs wisdom an immutable essence that only some possess\, or can it be cultivated? \nIn this online series\, Nichol Chase will engage in deep and meaningful conversations about cultivating wisdom through healing trauma\, self-mastery\, and building meaningful relationships. Dr. Daniel Siegel will join Nichol to discuss mindfulness through the lens of Interpersonal Neurobiology. Mahshid Hager\, LCSW\, will join to discuss movement through the lens of Somatic Experiencing. And Tracy Stackhouse will join to discuss music through the lens of the Polyvagal Theory. \nThroughout millennia\, some have described desirable human characteristics or gifts as immutable essences that are hard to train and require innate potential. In spite of this\, empirical research has revealed that expert abilities\, gifts or even wisdom are greatly influenced by the environment – which suggests that leaders are not born\, they are also made. In the paper Wisdom and how to cultivate it\, Igor Grossman suggests\, “The emerging evidence begins to suggest that from a constructivist point of view\, the potential for wise thinking emerged in the interaction of the person and their environment. It is up to us to realize this potential through the ways we view the self\, the situation\, and the world around us.”\nThroughout the series\, Nichol will talk about the Wisdom Building Method framework she developed during her time as a Garrison Institute Fellow. It draws upon the scientific disciplines of Interpersonal Neurobiology\, Somatic Experiencing and the Polyvagal Theory to inspire healing engagement through practice. \nTIMING\nAll sessions will run from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET\nFriday August 4\nTuesday August 8\nFriday August 11\nThe Zoom link will be emailed to you within 24 hours of signup.
