As a political analyst\, he has appeared on several international news organizations such as Voice America\, Russia Today\, HispanTV\, Australian Broadcast Corporation\, Democracy Now\, Aljazeera\, CCTV\, TVC News\, Deutsche Welle\, Afrique Media\, IvoirTV\, and BBC. \nBro. Imani Umoja\, based in Guinea Bissau\, serves on the Steering Committee of Black Alliance for Peace’s U.S. Out of Africa Network\, and is a Central Committee member of both the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC) and the All-African People’s Revolutionary Party (A-APRP). \nAnn Wright\, representing WILPF US\, spent thirteen years in the U.S. Army and sixteen additional years in the Army Reserves\, retiring as a Colonel. In 1987\, Col. Wright joined the Foreign Service and served as U.S. Deputy Ambassador in Sierra Leone\, Micronesia\, Afghanistan\, and Mongolia. She received the State Department’s Award for Heroism for her actions during the evacuation of 2\,500 people from the civil war in Sierra Leone\, at the time the largest evacuation since Saigon. DESCRIPTION:Since shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine earlier this year\, the Tigard-based humanitarian relief agency Medical Teams International (MTI) has been on the ground responding to the crisis. As Russia’s aggression continues to cause mass migration\, loss of life\, and destruction\, Medical Teams International continues to provide needed supplies and medical care to refugees crossing into Moldova and to the injured and ill within Ukraine. As Martha Newsome\, President & CEO of MTI recently said\, “the world continues to watch in disbelief and with great sadness\, Ukrainians are struggling to survive amidst the chaos of war.” \nThe situation has seen\, and will continue to see\, increasing volatility — reportedly more than five million refugees have crossed into Ukraine’s neighboring countries of Poland\, Hungary\, Romania\, Moldova\, and other countries since February 2022. With many towns and villages almost completely wiped out\, hotels and homes in western Ukraine bursting at the seams with displaced families seeking safety\, how have on-the-ground workers and volunteers responded to deliver urgent medical and psychological care to refugees? And what is the short- and long-term outlook from those on the frontlines? \nThis presentation will feature Medical Teams International’s Patty Hutton\, Response Specialist\, supporting emergency response in Ukraine\, and Joe DiCarlo\, MTI’s Global Ambassador and member of WorldOregon’s Board of Advisors\, for a look at the current situation and outlook on the crisis in Ukraine. \nAbout the Speakers \nPatty Hutton is currently a Response Specialist at Medical Teams International\, focused on supporting the Ukraine response.  Since 2010\, Patty has served across several response contexts with various international NGOs\, including Iraq\, Haiti (the 2010 earthquake\, Hurricanes Isaac and Matthew)\, Philippines\, South Sudan\, Bangladesh\, Darfur\, Somaliland\, Lebanon\, Greece\, Sudan\, Ethiopia\, and most recently Ukraine. She received her master’s degree in Public Policy from Pepperdine University\, and she also received her PhD in March of this year\, in Organizational Leadership—with her dissertation topic focusing on Humanitarian Fatigue in humanitarian aid leaders. Patty has also spent time working on a presidential campaign and has also spent some time outside of the aid world working with an environmental justice organization. \nJoe DiCarlo is Medical Teams International’s Global Ambassador. When Hurricane Mitch barreled through Central America in 1998\, Joe mobilized a team of medical professionals to help suffering families recover. This was his first assignment – responding to the second-deadliest hurricane in recorded history. Over the course of his 20 years at Medical Teams International\, Joe’s led dozens of disaster responses. Seeing the suffering on a mother’s face is what drives him to help Medical Teams International implement programs that provide for the whole person. DESCRIPTION:Join Southern Oregon Climate Actin Now November 29 to learn about what’s next after midterms.\n\n\nFrom SoCAN:\nElections have consequences; the result of the 2022 mid-term election could be dramatic at all levels. The Yale Program on Climate Change Communication reported that as of February 2022 74% of Oregonians think global warming is happening and 66% are worried about it. The data also suggest that 63% think Congress should do more about it\, while 53% think the President and the Governor should do more.  Nevertheless\, as the election approached\, polls consistently showed that the climate crisis ranked well below other more immediate pocket book issues in the minds of voters across the country\, with an array of other issues featuring more prominently in the public mind as critical to their voting choices. \nWe know that individual action and commitment is critical as a prerequisite for local\, state and federal action\, but even when voters acknowledge the urgency of acting on the climate crisis\, that recognition is not always translated into electoral action. The 2022 mid-terms represented a critical moment when voters were able to express the level of their concern by electing candidates who acknowledge the crisis and commit to action. \nThe November SOCAN general public meeting program will be devoted to exploring the results of the 2022 election and assessing how they hamper or contribute to our local\, state\, and national effort to address the climate crisis. \nDetails\, including registration – SOCAN Calendar

To prevent its destruction by Israeli forces\, he and other activists stepped in front of a bulldozer. His topic will be “Back from the Nuclear Brink: Prescription for Survival.” Dr. Helfand will lecture in person as well as being live-streamed worldwide on Willamette University’s YouTube channel at https://youtu.be/a4YvlcIAbX0 \n“Dr. Helfand is a perfect fit for this topic\,” said Fariborz Pakseresht\, a member of the Peace Lecture Committee. “He is co-chair of national Physicians for Social Responsibility’s Nuclear Weapons Abolition Committee\, as well as serving as Immediate Past President of PSR’s global parent organization\, International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW).” Helfand is also one of the originators of the international Back from the Brink campaign to address the global threat of annihilation by nuclear weapons. According to Peter Bergel\, another committee member\, “few people can equal Dr. Helfand’s mastery of the nuclear weapons issue.” \nThe lecture will take place at 7:30 pm on Wednesday\, October 26 in Willamette University’s Smith Auditorium. DESCRIPTION:Peace House is thrilled to announce that we plan to host our traditional Empty Bowls event live and in person on Friday\, October 21 at Wesley Hall. We invite everyone to celebrate Ashland’s continued generosity that helps fill the gaps for those facing the most need for food in the Rogue Valley by joining your friends and neighbors at this fun\, family friendly event. \nEach year since 2011\, around 200 people have purchased tickets to the soup supper\, and in so doing receive a beautiful\, handcrafted ceramic bowl filled with delicious homemade soup served by elected officials and civic leaders from our community. Soup will be served by Celebrity Servers who endorse the event. \nIn addition to a hot bowl of soup in a vessel you can take home\, we will also offer live music\, pottery for sale\, and more ways for you to support food security for everyone.
