SUMMARY:The Yemen War in Numbers: Saudi Escalation and U.S. Complicity
DESCRIPTION:President Biden came into office pledging to end U.S. support for the Saudi-led war on Yemen\, yet it has become clear that he has not. Now\, in the context of rising oil prices\, Biden is considering whether to give in to Saudi and Emirati demands that he escalate assistance for their war in exchange for increasing fossil fuel production. Yet as recent events have demonstrated\, America’s partners in the Middle East are hedging despite the Biden administration’s extensive support for their defense: they hope to strengthen their relationships with Moscow and Beijing while continuing to reap the benefits of Washington’s largesse. In the seven years since the Saudi-led coalition launched their war on Yemen\, the U.S. has been complicit in selling weapons and providing assistance without which the Saudis could not conduct their military operations. \nJoin The Intercept’s Jeremy Scahill\, Yemen Relief and Reconstruction founder Aisha Jumaan\, and The Cato Institute’s Justin Logan as they discuss a new brief from the Quincy Institute’s Annelle Sheline\, using data to highlight the U.S. role in supporting the war on Yemen and show parallels between Putin’s military assault on Ukraine and Mohammed bin Salman’s seven-year effort to destroy Yemen. Moderated by Quincy’s Executive Vice President Trita Parsi. \nThe discussion will take place on Thursday\, March 24\, from noon to 1 pm ET. \nREGISTER FOR EVENT

SUMMARY:Lotus Institute: Heart Sutra Workshop
DESCRIPTION:From the Lotus Institute \nThe Insight That Brings Us To The Other Shore is a gift from our beloved teacher\, Thich Nhat Hanh\, and those who came before him. Thich Nhat Hanh has called the Heart Sutra “the highest vision of the Buddha.” Chanting The Insight That Brings Us To The Other Shore\, Nhat Hanh’s new translation\, can awaken the teacher in us\, the one who shows us the way to our own awakened nature. \nDharma teacher and musician Brian Kimmel (Bk) with Dharma teacher\, Peggy Rowe Ward\, will lead us on a journey of learning with and chanting from The Heart Sutra. In this workshop\, we will: \n\nChant the Insight That Brings Us To The Other Shore\nShare tips on learning the chant and practicing it for ourselves and with our sanghas\nPractice with our aspirations as a means to help bring this teaching into our daily life and where it is needed in the world.\n\nWhen Thich Nhat Hanh completed this translation at 3am in the morning\, a moon ray penetrated his room. Let’s come together to experience the clear light of the moon\, and the deep abiding wisdom of this Sutra and our teacher. \nPlease know: you are welcome. Even if you don’t think you have a voice\, even if you think you can’t chant\, sing\, or carry a tune – your heart can. We hope you will join us.

SUMMARY:19 Years After the Invasion: A Reflection on the U.S. Military Presence in Iraq
DESCRIPTION:Nineteen years ago the Bush administration launched the invasion of Iraq under the pretext of weapons of mass destruction which was later proven false. While the invasion of Iraq removed Saddam Hussein’s brutal dictatorship from power\, it also unleashed an era of sectarian violence\, extremism\, and abuses. \nThe U.S. war in Iraq is now synonymous with an ill-planned interventionism\, a boondoggle.  4\,418 U.S. service members were killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom and another 107 in Operation Inherent Resolve. Approximately another thousand U.S. service members lost their lives in non-hostile incidents while supporting U.S. military actions in Iraq. Between 184\,382 to 207\,156 Iraqis were killed throughout the conflict. Incidents such as the Haditha massacre\, in which U.S. Marines killed 24 unarmed Iraqi civilians\, and the torture of prisoners at Abu Ghraib tarnished the reputation of the U.S. military. De-Baathification\, perceived sectarian marginalization\, and fighting in al-Anbar province later contributed to the rise of ISIS. \nNearly two decades later\, U.S. troops remain in Iraq under attenuated Congressional authorizations. As we look back on the past nineteen years with the gift of hindsight\, we should consider the ways in which the military-industrial complex and foreign policy establishment influenced our continued occupation. And more importantly\, hear from those directly affected by this conflict: veterans\, military families\, and Iraqi civilians. \nJoin us for a panel discussion with International Activist Dina Al Bayati\, who lived through the invasion and subsequent occupation of Iraq\, Brandi Jones\, Marine spouse and Organizing Director of the Secure Families Initiative\, and Iraq war veterans: Dan Caldwell\, a former Marine who now serves as Vice President of Foreign Policy for Stand Together\, Joanna Sweatt\, a former Marine who now serves as National Field Manager for Common Defense\, and U.S. Army veteran Naveed Shah\, Political Director of Common Defense. Quincy Institute Research Fellow Adam Weinstein will moderate. \nThe discussion will be held on Wednesday\, March 23 at 6:00 pm EDT.  \nREGISTER FOR EVENT

SUMMARY:Restoring Nature: What People of Faith Can Do to Heal the Earth
DESCRIPTION:Douglas Tallamy’s books have awakened thousands to the problem of wildlife decline and the solution that resides in habitat restoration. This is a solution of which you and your faith community can be a part. The solution can be as close as your backyard or the property surrounding your place of worship. In this webinar\, Tallamy will outline the crisis faced and what we can do in response. The green teams and green thumbs of faith communities will learn not only about cultivating native plants in the landscapes around them\, but also what can be done to create a transformative movement full of actions ordinary people everywhere can take. \nTo care for God’s creation\, we can start by simply stepping outside the doors of where we gather for worship to make the most of our sacred places. In this webinar\, Tallamy will raise our awareness and equip us to make a difference in our world. \nThis webinar is co-hosted by the Rev. Dr. Brooks Berndt who serves as the Minister of Environmental Justice for the United Church of Christ and the Rev. Carol Devine who serves as the Minister of Green Chalice for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the Interim Director of Blessed Tomorrow. \nREGISTER FOR EVENT HERE \nEvent Co-Sponsors: Blessed Tomorrow\, Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon\, Interfaith Power & Light\, Multnomah Athletic Club\, Oregon-Idaho Conference of the United Methodist Church\, Planet Church of First United Methodist Church of Portland\, and West Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District. \nSpecial thanks to the Rev. SUMMARY:Honduras Solidarity Webinar Part II
DESCRIPTION:This is the Second in four part Webinar series held every Tuesday from March 15 – April 5\,  5 PM PST.\n \nREGISTER FOR THE MARCH 22 EVENT HERE \nFrom the late 1800’s\, the United States has been destabilizing countries in Central America\, including Honduras\, through political\, corporate\, and military intervention. As recent as in 2009\, the U.S. stood by while the Honduran military violently ousted President Manuel Zelaya. Systemic inequality and the ensuing violence – including the criminalization and assassinations of hundreds of Honduran activists– has led to a significant increase in Honduran migration toward the U.S. over the past decade. \nWith the victory of Xiomara Castro\, the first woman head of state in Honduras\, in the elections of November 28 2021\, the country experienced a historic step forward for the popular resistance that coalesced after the 2009 coup. Still\, there are many uphill battles in the struggle for justice and dignity for the people of Honduras. The previous administrations since the 2009 coup betrayed their own people by selling the country’s land\, water\, and minerals to foreign investors; brutalizing of activists by the police and military with US-supplied funding and training; and installing maximum-security prisons designed after those existing in the US. \nIn this four-part webinar series\, we will be looking at how corruption\, land dispossession\, environmental degradation\, and systemic human rights abuses are the consequences of neoliberal (global free-market capitalist) policies and the legacy of U.S. imperialism. We at Honduras Solidarity Network and the InterReligious Task Force on Central America and Colombia invite you to join this series to gain a deeper understanding around these issues\, as well as what can be done by people living in the Global North to show solidarity. \nMarch 22: Transnational “development” – How the Honduran government enables US extraction of resources and exploitation of their people \nREGISTER HERE \nThroughout the 20th century and until present day\, Honduran leadership\, with the support of the United States\, has sold out land and water concessions to transnational corporations. This has happened through countless avenues\, including the Banana Wars one hundred years ago and the signing of the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) in 2006. This pattern has never ceased. Since the 2009 coup\, the authoritarian government has granted hundreds of concessions to foreign companies to extract minerals\, build dams\, create luxury resorts\, and log timber. One of the most obvious examples of this exploitation and extraction is the signing of the 2013 Zones for Economic Development and Employment (ZEDE) law\, which allows the government to further sell off Honduran land\, including collectively-held ancestral lands of Afro-descendant and Indigenous peoples. Foreign investors\, mostly from the US and Canada\, are moving in to develop autonomous charter cities where the government will have no jurisdiction. President Xiomara Castro had made it one of her main election campaign promises to overturn this law. \nJoin this webinar to examine the role the US government and corporations play in seizing land and waterways from communities in Honduras\, the popular resistance movement against the ZEDEs\, and the challenges faced by the new presidential administration and the people of Honduras in the current political landscape. \n

SUMMARY:Honduras Solidarity Webinar Series
DESCRIPTION:Join Honduras Solidarity Network and IRTF in a four-part webinar series from March 15 – April 5 to learn from Honduran activists about the effects of US imperialism on people of the Global South. \nFrom the late 1800’s\, the United States has been destabilizing countries in Central America\, including Honduras\, through political\, corporate\, and military intervention. As recent as in 2009\, the U.S. stood by while the Honduran military violently ousted President Manuel Zelaya. We see Xiomara Castro’s electoral victory as another step in the popular resistance that preceded the 2009 coup. This victory resulted from the work of a coalition that spanned the political spectrum in Honduras to oppose the re-election of newly-displaced dictator\, Juan Orlando Hernandez. It is also because of the countless sacrifices of criminalized and murdered activists that the people of Honduras can continue to resist the harmful impacts of the U.S. and Canada-backed neoliberal model (global free-market capitalist). \nThe Honduran people are working to build a new country with justice and dignity. Join this webinar to gain a deeper understanding of the current political landscape in Honduras after the election of President Xiomara Castro\, the new foreign policy interests of the U.S. and Canada towards Honduras\, and what it means now to build solidarity with the people of Honduras. U.S.-Honduran solidarity. \n

SUMMARY:Innocent Until Proven Muslim: Author Talk with Dr. Maha Hilal

SUMMARY:U.S. Military and Environmental Justice Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The United States military is one of the world’s biggest polluters. As an institution\, it leads the world in oil consumption and emits enormous amounts of greenhouse gases. To grasp the environmental impact of the U.S. military\, however\, requires us to go beyond statistics and numbers. One must listen to those from the communities directly affected. This webinar will provide an overview of environmental justice concerns pertaining to the U.S. military while also centering the voices of those engaged in the struggle to stop the pollution caused by the Navy’s Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility on the island of Oahu. Faith communities will not only learn about the issues\, but also how they can take action for justice. Even if you can’t make the scheduled time of 1 pm ET on Wednesday\, March 9th\, still sign-up\, you will receive a recording. \nRegister for this Zoom Event \nThis monthly installment of Creation Justice Webinars is co-hosted by the Rev. Dr. Brooks Berndt who serves as the Minister of Environmental Justice for the United Church of Christ and the Rev. Michael Malcom who serves as the Executive Director for Alabama Interfaith Power & Light and the People’s Justice Council. \nThe Just Peace Network of the United Church of Christ is a co-sponsor of this event.

SUMMARY:Virtual Film Festival Militarism And Water\, Survival And Resistance
DESCRIPTION:WATER & WAR: A Virtual Film Festival Exploring The Intersections Of Militarism And Water\, Survival And Resistance \nTuesday\, March 15\, 2022 to Tuesday\, March 22\, 2022 \nJoin World Beyond War for our 2nd annual virtual film festival! \nWith the escalating conflict over Ukraine\, our work to call for the abolition of war seems ever more pertinent. In trying times like these\, it feels especially important for us to come together in solidarity\, unifying our collective call for demilitarization and nonviolence. Our “Water & War” film festival from March 15-22 will provide that opportunity for international networking and discussion\, as we watch and learn about the human and environmental impact of war and militarism worldwide\, and the stories of those who are standing up to resist it. \nThis year’s “Water & War” festival from March 15-22\, 2022 explores the intersection of militarism & water\, survival & resistance\, in the lead-up to World Water Day on March 22. A unique mix of films explores this theme\, from PFAS pollution on a military base in Michigan and the infamous Red Hill fuel leak in Hawai’i poisoning groundwater\, to Syrian war refugees fleeing violent conflict by boat to Europe and the story of the assassination of Honduran Indigenous water activist Berta Cáceres. \nEach screening will be followed by a special panel discussion with key representatives from the films. \nGET FESTIVAL TICKETS HERE \nDay 1 of the festival on Tuesday\, March 15 at 7:00pm Eastern Daylight Time launches with a discussion of the sweeping water contamination caused by U.S. military bases worldwide with screenings of No Defense & The Empire Files’ A Battle for Water in Hawai’i. The post-film discussion will include Craig Minor\, Tony Spaniola\, Mikey Inouye\, and other special guests TBA. \n  \nDay 2 on Saturday\, March 19 at 3:00pm Eastern Daylight Time features a screening of the film The Crossing\, with director George Kurian. A rare\, firsthand account of one of the most dangerous journeys of our time\, this timely\, nail-biting documentary follows the grueling plight of a group of Syrian refugees as they cross the Mediterranean Sea and travel across Europe. The panel discussion will feature director George Kurian and Niamh Ní Bhriain\, coordinator of the Transnational Institute’s War and Pacification Programme. \nDay 3 – World Water Day\, Tuesday\, March 22 at 7:00pm-9:00pm EDT (GMT-04:00) \nThe festival finale features Berta Didn’t Die\, She Multiplied!\, a celebration of the life and legacy of Honduran Indigenous\, feminist\, and environmental activist Berta Cáceres. The film tells the story of the Honduran military coup\, the assassination of Berta\, and the victory in the Indigenous struggle to protect the Gualcarque River. The insidious agents of the local oligarchy\, the World Bank\, and North American corporations continue to kill but that will not stop the social movements. From Flint to Standing Rock to Honduras\, the water is sacred and the power is in the people. \nThis screening is co-sponsored by Mutual Aid Media and Peace Brigades International. \nMORE INFORMATION AND REGISTRATION HERE

SUMMARY:Stand With Ukraine Rally
DESCRIPTION:Oregon District 2 Indivisible\, the Rogue Valley Chapter of Veterans for Peace and Peace House invite you to attend a rally to Stand With Ukraine on Wednesday\, March 2\, at Vogel Plaza in Medford. \nParticipants are asked to wear blue and yellow in honor of Ukraine’s flag\, and to bring signs\, sunflowers\, and donations to benefit Doctors Without Borders\, which is providing aid to people injured and displaced by the conflict. \nWhy Gather?\n\n– Putin’s attack on Ukraine is an act of war that has inspired a worldwide response. It is important to show that the people of Southern Oregon support the independence of Ukraine and condemn the invasion of an independent nation.\n– This is an international crisis and should not be a partisan issue.\n– We are not happy with statements by Trump and GOP leaders who have praised Putin and tried to distract their followers’ attention by blaming the current administration.\n– We are particularly unhappy with our congressman\, Rep. Cliff Bentz\, who – a week after the attack – has remained silent on this issue. We will use this rally to ask him to make a public statement. \nThe groups invite everyone to come out and show their support for peace and the people of Ukraine on this evening. \nBackground: \nORD2 Indivisible is a grassroots organization devoted to keeping our members of Congress and other elected officials accountable. It is based on the Indivisible Guide\, with the goal of preserving a free press\, voting rights\, civil rights\, environmental protections\, health care\, and the protection of our nation’s most vulnerable citizens. It is based on the values of inclusion\, tolerance and fairness in its fight for democracy. \nVeterans for Peace\, Rogue Valley Chapter 156 is part of a global organization of military veterans and allies whose collective efforts are to build a culture of peace by using their experiences and lifting their voices. They inform the public of the true causes of war and the enormous costs of wars\, with an obligation to heal the wounds of wars. The network has over 140 chapters worldwide whose work includes: educating the public\, advocating for a dismantling of the war economy\, providing services that assist veterans and victims of war\, and most significantly\, working to end all wars.

DESCRIPTION:Harvard University’s Center for Latin American Studies presents\, “The New Neoliberal Experiment in Latin America: Honduran ZEDEs or Private Cities.” \nSpeakers include Venessa Cardenas Woods\, Vice President of the Crawfish Rock Governing Council; Member of the Coordinating Board for Territorial Defense of the Bay Islands in Honduras; Lucía Vijil Saybe\, researcher and analyst at Centre for the Study of Democracy (CESPAD); Beth Geglia\, public anthropologist focusing on processes of privatization and accumulation in urban and rural settings\, tech capitalism\, alternative economies\, and human rights; Oscar Orlando Hendrix\, human rights defender\, lawyer\, public policy consultant\, and member of the Honduran National Movement against the ZEDES. \nModerated by: María José Méndez\, Junior Fellow at Harvard Society of Fellows; incoming Assistant Professor in the Political Sciences\, University of Toronto. \n“While ZEDEs have been praised by libertarians as one of the most innovative special jurisdictions in the world\, allowing for sweeping regulatory autonomy from the state\, Hondurans have mounted a common front against them. The U.S. insists that Ukraine may join NATO in the future while Russia insists that it should not. NATO has become a worldwide military alliance as the U.S. pursues its policy of a new Cold War against Russia. In 2020\, Wilkerson worked on bipartisan projects to prepare for the possibility that a defeated Donald Trump would refuse to leave office. \nReiner Braun is the executive director of the International Peace Bureau\, the founder of the No to NATO Network\, and is active with the International Network of Engineers and Scientists for Global Responsibility (INES) and the International Association of Lawyers Against Nuclear Arms (IALANA). US officials insist that the Russians will invade Ukraine. Russia has repeatedly denied this. \nIn recent days the US and some of their allies have closed their embassies and asked their nationals to leave Ukraine. [The US and allies moved their embassies to Lvov in western Ukraine where Nazis predominate.] \nThe Ukrainian military has a force of 150\,000 troops\, that are U.S. trained and armed with modern US weapons\, near the Russian border and the independent regions in Donbass. These independent regions have taken a stand in opposition to the right-wing\, coup government in Kiev\, since 2014. The Ukrainian military has started heavy shelling of the independent areas of Donbass\, which have returned the fire. \nEvery U.S. war in our lifetime has been based on false information\, repeated relentlessly by the corporate media. There is deep apprehension that the US and the Ukrainian government are preparing a “false flag” incident that could lead to a major conflict. \nThe US has tens of thousands of troops in Europe\, it is putting troops on high alert and sending more. They are not only arming the Ukrainian military\, but they are expanding NATO bases and sending additional arms and missiles to other NATO countries in the region. \nIt is important that the U.S. antiwar movement come together to oppose these dangerous war moves. Please join us this evening!

SUMMARY:Water is Life: Webinar on Choosing Water over War
DESCRIPTION:During the U.S. holiday of Thanksgiving last year\, military families in Hawaii turned on their water faucets\, and what came out made their homes smelled like a petrol station. It turned out that the U.S. Navy’s Red Hill fuel tanks had been leaking petroleum into the drinking water. The contaminated aquifer supplies 90% of the island of Oahu. The State Dept. of Health ordered the Navy to drain the tanks\, but the Navy flouted the order\, saying it will appeal\, with no regard whatsoever for the health and safety of the very citizens it professes to protect.   \nThe U.S. military’s priority — above all — is confrontation with China and Russia. It insists that “security” must come first. But its willingness to sacrifice clean drinking water and a livable future is nothing short of blasphemy. \nIn its mission to provoke China\, the U.S. has been ramping up the militarization of the Pacific over the past decade — and with it has come increased contamination and cultural genocide. Not just in Hawaii\, but also in Korea’s Jeju Island\, the Philippines\, and also on islands still bound by colonial shackles\, such as Okinawa and the Ryukus\, and Guam and the Marianas. Like Hawaii\, these sacred places have been ill-fated to serve as the strategic nodes from which war against China would be launched. \nRegister for this free\, public webinar to hear from folks on the front lines about how they are mobilizing to counter this Goliath\, and how we are all connected by the sacred solidarity of water. \nThe event will include presentations\, followed by Q&A\, from these presenters: \nKamanamaikalani Beamer (Hawaii) is the Dana Naone Hall Chair in Hawaiian Studies\, Literature\, and the Environment at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. He is the author of the award-winning No Mākou Ka Mana—Liberating the Nation and the forthcoming Islands and Cultures: How Pacific Islands Can Influence How We Understand the World (with Peter Vitousek and Te Maire Tau). He previously served as executive director of the Kohala Center\, director of ‘Āina-Based Education at Kamehameha Schools\, and director of Stanford University’s First Nations Futures Institute. He is a co-founder of ʻĀina Aloha Economic Futures. \nWalden Flores Bello (Philippines) is a Filipino academic\, environmentalist\, and social worker who served as a member of the House of Representatives of the Philippines. He is an international adjunct professor at Binghamton University\, professor of sociology and public administration at the University of the Philippines Diliman\, and executive director of regional policy think-tank Focus on the Global South. Bello is also the founder and chairperson of the left-wing alliance Laban ng Masa. (lit. Struggle of the Masses) \nSung-Hee Choi (Jeju\, Korea) is a peace activist and one of the key organizers within the Jeju naval base resistance. She works tirelessly to demilitarize Jeju. She also run after school kids programs in Naha. Shinako specializes in language revitalization\, de-militarization and de-colonization of the Ryukyu islands. Shinako has attended UN Permanet Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) and Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP) to report colonized situation of the Ryukyu islands. \nMaria Hernandez May (Guahan) is a CHamoru mother of three\, environmental and cultural rights activist\, and interim executive officer of indigenous CHamoru women-led non-profit Prutehi Litekyan: Save Ritidian (PLSR)\, which aligns with organizations throughout the Mariåna Islands to protect sacred native lands and advocate for the rightful return of ancestral lands. Maria is a 2022 Bertha Foundation Fellow investigating the relationships between politics and profit and the ways they contribute to the degradation of Guåhan’s (Guam) main fresh water aquifer and the contamination of the island’s coastal waters. Maria has a B.A. in Literature and M.S. in Business Administration\, as well as a background in journalism\, strategic communications and marketing. \nAnd Moderator: \nKoohan Paik-Mander (Hawaii) is a Member of the Board of Directors of World BEYOND War.
