Erika Bucio will translate for the Spanish-speaking panelists \nSince time immemorial\, vulnerable communities across the globe\, including in the United States\, have suffered disproportionately from the insults resulting from the environmental degradation that inconsiderate and irresponsible behaviors impose on society. It has become increasingly obvious that no proposal designed to address the climate crisis can be effective unless it also incorporates recognition and redress to the years of inequity that have existed. We cannot successfully remedy the climate crisis if our efforts maintain or heighten the social injustice that is already evident throughout our society. \nThe May SOCAN General Meeting will be dedicated to increasing our understanding of what climate justice means and the importance of incorporating climate justice into all we do. \nThere is no charge for joining the ZOOM meeting\, but registration is required. \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:KS Wild invites you to their 5th Annual Eight Dollar Mountain Stewardship Event. \nThis event aims to help repair damage and protect the botanical diversity in this rare serpentine landscape on Memorial Day weekend. The group will be working together with the Forest Service in the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest\, Wild Rivers District. They will offer a short talk about safety and botanical significance. We will then split into work groups (if needed) and begin restoration projects. Expect low to moderate intensity hiking\, digging and lifting. We will be cleaning up the botanical kiosk sign\, repairing buck and rail fencing\, signage installation and repairs as needed\, cleaning up trash and doing a photo assessment and GPS documentation of all signages and areas of concern. \nPort-o-Potties\, water and snacks will be available during the day. We look forward to working along side you to encourage the responsible use and protection of the natural environment through conservation and sustainable practices! DESCRIPTION:For their April Zoom meeting\, Deconstructing Whiteness will focus on the topic Pioneers as Celebrated Figures: What are the Stories We Tell Ourselves? \nFrom Deconstructing Whiteness: \n“As we contemplate sayings such as “the last American frontier”\, “pioneers had it rough and persevered”\, “pioneers made something of this land\, they foraged\, and shaped it from nothing”\, “the founders of the U.S. were great men”\, “how the american west was won”\, “let’s play cowboys and indians”\, “last person on the totem pole”\, etc……let’s look at deconstructing these white colonists’ phrases. \nWhen we think about Euro-American settlers/colonizers and the way they have been romanticized for future generations\, we ponder this for at least two reasons: \n1) Why past and current white generations did and still continue this practice to this day\, and\n2) What keeps us believing in the white-centered\, brainwashed stories? \nWhat stories have we told ourselves\, as a people\, that live in us as “truth?” With some research\, we find they [stories as truth] are not based in fact. SUMMARY:SOCAN: Funding Healthy Soils in Oregon
DESCRIPTION:All gardeners and farmers want healthy soil.  One of the best ways to achieve this is through practices that improve soil organic matter.  Regrettably\, we have been degrading our soils for too long and need to adjust our behavior. Fortunately\, doing so may lead to a win-win outcome: healthy soil and crops\, and we may reduce greenhouse gases from the atmosphere – leading to a healthier planet for all life. Because we all tend to be more comfortable doing what we currently do than making a change to unknown territory\, encouraging improved techniques is not always easy and requires incentives. \nThe catch is finding funds to incentivize this change in behavior.  Because of financial resources made available through the United States Department of Agriculture Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities opportunity\, there may be a solution.  Oregon’s Department of Agriculture (ODA) is developing an application for funds from this pool to support farmers who want to enhance their soil health and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. \nAt our next SOCAN Monthly General Meeting on April 26th\, Dr. Mike Badzmierowski\, Soil Health Specialist with ODA will explain the effort underway and discuss how it might work.
