SUMMARY:Innocent Until Proven Muslim: Author Talk with Dr. Maha Hilal
DESCRIPTION:After two decades of the War on Terror and its catastrophic impact\, Dr. Hilal presents us with a policy-informed examination of institutionalized Islamophobia and the ever-expanding post 9/11 surveillance state. \nJoin Dr. Hilal and SOA Watch Staff Collective to discuss how the official narrative of the War on Terror has justified the creation of a sprawling apparatus of state violence rooted in Islamophobia. Dr. Hilal will unpack the taxonomy of the War on Terror that she outlines in her book—militarism and warfare\, draconian immigration policy\, surveillance\, federal terrorism prosecutions\, and detention and torture. Dr. Hilal and SOA Watch will also discuss the experience and resilience of Muslim communities fighting for dignity and justice\, including the ongoing struggle to Close Guantanamo Bay Prison. \nLink to Zoom Event Page  (details in registration confirmation) \nASL Interpretation and CART Captioning available

SUMMARY:U.S. Military and Environmental Justice Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The United States military is one of the world’s biggest polluters. As an institution\, it leads the world in oil consumption and emits enormous amounts of greenhouse gases. To grasp the environmental impact of the U.S. military\, however\, requires us to go beyond statistics and numbers. One must listen to those from the communities directly affected. This webinar will provide an overview of environmental justice concerns pertaining to the U.S. military while also centering the voices of those engaged in the struggle to stop the pollution caused by the Navy’s Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility on the island of Oahu. Faith communities will not only learn about the issues\, but also how they can take action for justice. Even if you can’t make the scheduled time of 1 pm ET on Wednesday\, March 9th\, still sign-up\, you will receive a recording. \nRegister for this Zoom Event \nThis monthly installment of Creation Justice Webinars is co-hosted by the Rev. Dr. Brooks Berndt who serves as the Minister of Environmental Justice for the United Church of Christ and the Rev. Michael Malcom who serves as the Executive Director for Alabama Interfaith Power & Light and the People’s Justice Council. \nThe Just Peace Network of the United Church of Christ is a co-sponsor of this event.

SUMMARY:Virtual Film Festival Militarism And Water\, Survival And Resistance
DESCRIPTION:WATER & WAR: A Virtual Film Festival Exploring The Intersections Of Militarism And Water\, Survival And Resistance \nTuesday\, March 15\, 2022 to Tuesday\, March 22\, 2022 \nJoin World Beyond War for our 2nd annual virtual film festival! \nWith the escalating conflict over Ukraine\, our work to call for the abolition of war seems ever more pertinent. In trying times like these\, it feels especially important for us to come together in solidarity\, unifying our collective call for demilitarization and nonviolence. Our “Water & War” film festival from March 15-22 will provide that opportunity for international networking and discussion\, as we watch and learn about the human and environmental impact of war and militarism worldwide\, and the stories of those who are standing up to resist it. \nThis year’s “Water & War” festival from March 15-22\, 2022 explores the intersection of militarism & water\, survival & resistance\, in the lead-up to World Water Day on March 22. A unique mix of films explores this theme\, from PFAS pollution on a military base in Michigan and the infamous Red Hill fuel leak in Hawai’i poisoning groundwater\, to Syrian war refugees fleeing violent conflict by boat to Europe and the story of the assassination of Honduran Indigenous water activist Berta Cáceres. \nEach screening will be followed by a special panel discussion with key representatives from the films. \nGET FESTIVAL TICKETS HERE \nDay 1 of the festival on Tuesday\, March 15 at 7:00pm Eastern Daylight Time launches with a discussion of the sweeping water contamination caused by U.S. military bases worldwide with screenings of No Defense & The Empire Files’ A Battle for Water in Hawai’i. The post-film discussion will include Craig Minor\, Tony Spaniola\, Mikey Inouye\, and other special guests TBA. \n  \nDay 2 on Saturday\, March 19 at 3:00pm Eastern Daylight Time features a screening of the film The Crossing\, with director George Kurian. A rare\, firsthand account of one of the most dangerous journeys of our time\, this timely\, nail-biting documentary follows the grueling plight of a group of Syrian refugees as they cross the Mediterranean Sea and travel across Europe. The panel discussion will feature director George Kurian and Niamh Ní Bhriain\, coordinator of the Transnational Institute’s War and Pacification Programme. \nDay 3 – World Water Day\, Tuesday\, March 22 at 7:00pm-9:00pm EDT (GMT-04:00) \nThe festival finale features Berta Didn’t Die\, She Multiplied!\, a celebration of the life and legacy of Honduran Indigenous\, feminist\, and environmental activist Berta Cáceres. The film tells the story of the Honduran military coup\, the assassination of Berta\, and the victory in the Indigenous struggle to protect the Gualcarque River. The insidious agents of the local oligarchy\, the World Bank\, and North American corporations continue to kill but that will not stop the social movements. From Flint to Standing Rock to Honduras\, the water is sacred and the power is in the people. \nThis screening is co-sponsored by Mutual Aid Media and Peace Brigades International. \nMORE INFORMATION AND REGISTRATION HERE

SUMMARY:Stand With Ukraine Rally
DESCRIPTION:Oregon District 2 Indivisible\, the Rogue Valley Chapter of Veterans for Peace and Peace House invite you to attend a rally to Stand With Ukraine on Wednesday\, March 2\, at Vogel Plaza in Medford. \nParticipants are asked to wear blue and yellow in honor of Ukraine’s flag\, and to bring signs\, sunflowers\, and donations to benefit Doctors Without Borders\, which is providing aid to people injured and displaced by the conflict. \nWhy Gather?\n\n– Putin’s attack on Ukraine is an act of war that has inspired a worldwide response. It is important to show that the people of Southern Oregon support the independence of Ukraine and condemn the invasion of an independent nation.\n– This is an international crisis and should not be a partisan issue.\n– We are not happy with statements by Trump and GOP leaders who have praised Putin and tried to distract their followers’ attention by blaming the current administration.\n– We are particularly unhappy with our congressman\, Rep. Cliff Bentz\, who – a week after the attack – has remained silent on this issue. We will use this rally to ask him to make a public statement. \nThe groups invite everyone to come out and show their support for peace and the people of Ukraine on this evening. \nBackground: \nORD2 Indivisible is a grassroots organization devoted to keeping our members of Congress and other elected officials accountable. It is based on the Indivisible Guide\, with the goal of preserving a free press\, voting rights\, civil rights\, environmental protections\, health care\, and the protection of our nation’s most vulnerable citizens. It is based on the values of inclusion\, tolerance and fairness in its fight for democracy. \nVeterans for Peace\, Rogue Valley Chapter 156 is part of a global organization of military veterans and allies whose collective efforts are to build a culture of peace by using their experiences and lifting their voices. They inform the public of the true causes of war and the enormous costs of wars\, with an obligation to heal the wounds of wars. The network has over 140 chapters worldwide whose work includes: educating the public\, advocating for a dismantling of the war economy\, providing services that assist veterans and victims of war\, and most significantly\, working to end all wars.

SUMMARY:Witness Solidarity Collective: What Are ZEDEs?
DESCRIPTION:Harvard University’s Center for Latin American Studies presents\, “The New Neoliberal Experiment in Latin America: Honduran ZEDEs or Private Cities.” \nSpeakers include Venessa Cardenas Woods\, Vice President of the Crawfish Rock Governing Council; Member of the Coordinating Board for Territorial Defense of the Bay Islands in Honduras; Lucía Vijil Saybe\, researcher and analyst at Centre for the Study of Democracy (CESPAD); Beth Geglia\, public anthropologist focusing on processes of privatization and accumulation in urban and rural settings\, tech capitalism\, alternative economies\, and human rights; Oscar Orlando Hendrix\, human rights defender\, lawyer\, public policy consultant\, and member of the Honduran National Movement against the ZEDES. \nModerated by: María José Méndez\, Junior Fellow at Harvard Society of Fellows; incoming Assistant Professor in the Political Sciences\, University of Toronto. \n“While ZEDEs have been praised by libertarians as one of the most innovative special jurisdictions in the world\, allowing for sweeping regulatory autonomy from the state\, Hondurans have mounted a common front against them. Campesino\, Indigenous\, and Black communities\, for instance\, fear the corporate takeover of their land and decry the neocolonial character of these enclaves. This panel will unfold the dangers that the ZEDEs neoliberal experiment poses to democracy\, sovereignty\, and black and indigenous lands.” \nThis event is sponsored by the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies at Harvard University and the Witness for Peace Solidarity Collective. SUMMARY:TODAY: Ukraine Crisis: NO to NATO\, Yes to Peace with Russia
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, March 1\, join CODEPINK Congress & Massachusetts Peace Action for the third event in the group’s Special Series on Foreign Policy. \nThis event is also co-sponsored by the Campaign for Peace\, Disarmament and Common Security. \nTensions between the U.S. and Russia are higher than they’ve been in many years. The U.S. insists that Ukraine may join NATO in the future while Russia insists that it should not. NATO has become a worldwide military alliance as the U.S. pursues its policy of a new Cold War against Russia. Will Ukraine be recognized as a neutral nation or will the U.S. maintain its goal of integrating Ukraine into NATO? Can Europe turn towards a common security policy before NATO’s June summit in Madrid? \nRSVP for the continuing CODEPINK Congress and Massachusetts Peace Action series here \n*Note: By RSVPing to this event\, you are signing up to join the CODEPINK AND either Massachusetts Peace Action or your local Peace Action affiliate’s email list \nFeatured Guests: \nCol. Lawrence Wilkerson is an adjunct professor of government and public policy at the College of William and Mary and the former Chief of Staff to Secretary of State Colin Powell (2002 to 2005). He is a critic of U.S. foreign policy surrounding the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars\, Iran\, and the new Cold Wars with China and Russia\, and asserts that the U.S. is not a democracy but a war state that forces its will on the global community. In 2020\, Wilkerson worked on bipartisan projects to prepare for the possibility that a defeated Donald Trump would refuse to leave office. \nReiner Braun is the executive director of the International Peace Bureau\, the founder of the No to NATO Network\, and is active with the International Network of Engineers and Scientists for Global Responsibility (INES) and the International Association of Lawyers Against Nuclear Arms (IALANA). He is also the author of several books\, including “Einstein and Peace” and a biography about the Peace Nobel Laureate Joseph Rotblat. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Abroad coalition of peace organizations will host an open meeting on how to respond to the Current Crisis in Ukraine and war threats on Russia. What can do about it? \nPlease join this important online meeting and discussion with leaders from the antiwar movement including (in alphabetical order): \nLeela Anand – ANSWER coalition \nAjamu Baraka – Black Alliance for Peace \nMedea Benjamin – CodePink \nSara Flounders – International Action Center \nMargaret Flowers – Popular Resistance \nBruce Gagnon – Global Network Against Weapons & Nuclear Power in Space \nJoe Jamison – US Peace Council \nMargaret Kimberley – Black Agenda Report \nJeff Mackler – United National Antiwar Coalition \nNancy Price – Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (US) \nSusan Schnall – Veterans For Peace \nDavid Swanson – World Beyond War \nJoe Lombardo will chair. Ajamu Baraka will give an opening statement \nPlease click here to register for the meeting: https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_ 10cVDLQuQR6T3WPeAkJwtw \nOnly a few short months after the chaotic US defeat in Afghanistan\, the US is pushing a war with Russia\, a major nuclear power. US officials insist that the Russians will invade Ukraine. Russia has repeatedly denied this. \nIn recent days the US and some of their allies have closed their embassies and asked their nationals to leave Ukraine. [The US and allies moved their embassies to Lvov in western Ukraine where Nazis predominate.] \nThe Ukrainian military has a force of 150\,000 troops\, that are U.S. trained and armed with modern US weapons\, near the Russian border and the independent regions in Donbass. These independent regions have taken a stand in opposition to the right-wing\, coup government in Kiev\, since 2014. The Ukrainian military has started heavy shelling of the independent areas of Donbass\, which have returned the fire. \nEvery U.S. war in our lifetime has been based on false information\, repeated relentlessly by the corporate media. There is deep apprehension that the US and the Ukrainian government are preparing a “false flag” incident that could lead to a major conflict. \nThe US has tens of thousands of troops in Europe\, it is putting troops on high alert and sending more. They are not only arming the Ukrainian military\, but they are expanding NATO bases and sending additional arms and missiles to other NATO countries in the region. \nIt is important that the U.S. antiwar movement come together to oppose these dangerous war moves. Please join us this evening!

SUMMARY:Water is Life: Webinar on Choosing Water over War
DESCRIPTION:During the U.S. holiday of Thanksgiving last year\, military families in Hawaii turned on their water faucets\, and what came out made their homes smelled like a petrol station. It turned out that the U.S. Navy’s Red Hill fuel tanks had been leaking petroleum into the drinking water. The contaminated aquifer supplies 90% of the island of Oahu. The State Dept. of Health ordered the Navy to drain the tanks\, but the Navy flouted the order\, saying it will appeal\, with no regard whatsoever for the health and safety of the very citizens it professes to protect.   \nThe U.S. military’s priority — above all — is confrontation with China and Russia. It insists that “security” must come first. But its willingness to sacrifice clean drinking water and a livable future is nothing short of blasphemy. \nIn its mission to provoke China\, the U.S. has been ramping up the militarization of the Pacific over the past decade — and with it has come increased contamination and cultural genocide. Not just in Hawaii\, but also in Korea’s Jeju Island\, the Philippines\, and also on islands still bound by colonial shackles\, such as Okinawa and the Ryukus\, and Guam and the Marianas. Like Hawaii\, these sacred places have been ill-fated to serve as the strategic nodes from which war against China would be launched. \nRegister for this free\, public webinar to hear from folks on the front lines about how they are mobilizing to counter this Goliath\, and how we are all connected by the sacred solidarity of water. \nThe event will include presentations\, followed by Q&A\, from these presenters: \nKamanamaikalani Beamer (Hawaii) is the Dana Naone Hall Chair in Hawaiian Studies\, Literature\, and the Environment at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. He is the author of the award-winning No Mākou Ka Mana—Liberating the Nation and the forthcoming Islands and Cultures: How Pacific Islands Can Influence How We Understand the World (with Peter Vitousek and Te Maire Tau). He previously served as executive director of the Kohala Center\, director of ‘Āina-Based Education at Kamehameha Schools\, and director of Stanford University’s First Nations Futures Institute. He is a co-founder of ʻĀina Aloha Economic Futures. \nWalden Flores Bello (Philippines) is a Filipino academic\, environmentalist\, and social worker who served as a member of the House of Representatives of the Philippines. He is an international adjunct professor at Binghamton University\, professor of sociology and public administration at the University of the Philippines Diliman\, and executive director of regional policy think-tank Focus on the Global South. Bello is also the founder and chairperson of the left-wing alliance Laban ng Masa. (lit. Struggle of the Masses) \nSung-Hee Choi (Jeju\, Korea) is a peace activist and one of the key organizers within the Jeju naval base resistance. She works tirelessly to demilitarize Jeju. Sung-Hee is a member of the board of advisors at the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space. In 2011 she was imprisoned for her role in the Save Jeju effort. \nShinako Oyakawa (Okinawa) is a native Okinawan mother\, activist\, writer\, co-director of Association of Comprehensive Studies for Independence of the Lew Chewans (ACSILs) and part time lecturer of Okinawa University. She also run after school kids programs in Naha. Shinako specializes in language revitalization\, de-militarization and de-colonization of the Ryukyu islands. Shinako has attended UN Permanet Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) and Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP) to report colonized situation of the Ryukyu islands. \nMaria Hernandez May (Guahan) is a CHamoru mother of three\, environmental and cultural rights activist\, and interim executive officer of indigenous CHamoru women-led non-profit Prutehi Litekyan: Save Ritidian (PLSR)\, which aligns with organizations throughout the Mariåna Islands to protect sacred native lands and advocate for the rightful return of ancestral lands. Maria is a 2022 Bertha Foundation Fellow investigating the relationships between politics and profit and the ways they contribute to the degradation of Guåhan’s (Guam) main fresh water aquifer and the contamination of the island’s coastal waters. Maria has a B.A. in Literature and M.S. in Business Administration\, as well as a background in journalism\, strategic communications and marketing. \nAnd Moderator: \nKoohan Paik-Mander (Hawaii) is a Member of the Board of Directors of World BEYOND War. She is also a board member of the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space\, is part of the CODEPINK working group “China is Not Our Enemy\,” and is on the advisory committee of the Global Just Transition project at Foreign Policy in Focus. She formerly served as campaign director of the Asia-Pacific program at the International Forum on Globalization. She is co-author of The Superferry Chronicles: Hawaii’s Uprising Against Militarism\, Commercialism and the Desecration of the Earth\, and has written on militarism in the Asia-Pacific for The Nation\, The Progressive\, Foreign Policy in Focus\, and other publications.

SUMMARY:Sexual and Relationship Violence. Time for Change.
DESCRIPTION:The Jefferson Center presents “Sexual and Relationship Violence:  Time for Change.” on February 13. \n\n\nWhy aren’t sexual violence and relationship violence gone from our society? Susan Moen will review risks\, social norms\, and stereotypes that encourage sexual violence. She will outline programs and strategies for prevention of harm. Register for the Zoom conversation by clicking the link here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZcld-uppzkvE9UV2PX7obDKQt9Hn6P…(link is external)\nFor decades\, prevention work focused on teaching women (always women) to change their behaviors in order to lessen their risk of assault: “how not to get raped\,” “personal safety\,” and “risk reduction.” Recently\, there has been a move toward changing social norms and stereotypes that allow or even encourage sexual violence. What does prevention work look like in the Rogue Valley? What are the goals and strategies of these programs? What do we know now about causes as well as impacts? What can we do personally and as a community? Where is resistance to change? Did COVID change anything? \nAbout the Presenter: Susan Moen is the Executive Director and co-founder of the local non-profit Jackson County SART (Sexual Assault Response Team) which provides direct services to survivors of sexual violence and brings sexual violence prevention classes into K-12 schools\, businesses and community groups. Susan has worked in the field of sexual violence response for over 30 years. \nRegister at https://www.thejeffcenter.org/salon-current-events

And yet\, that seems to be something many of us have great difficulty with. \nWe will develop practices around the three key components of self-compassion identified by researcher Kristin Neff: \n\nKindness\, to soften our hearts and open to suffering\nA sense of common humanity\, to connect us to our essential inter-being with all life\nMindfulness\, to open us to the present moment and capacity for gratitude\n\nThe growing field of research around self-compassion indicates it is strongly associated with enhanced emotional well being and relationships along with diminished anxiety\, depression\, and stress. Self-compassion provides emotional strength and resilience\, allowing us to admit our shortcomings\, motivate ourselves with kindness\, forgive ourselves when needed\, relate wholeheartedly to others\, and be more authentically ourselves. \nIn this workshop we will engage in experiential exercises\, including meditation\, and provide home practices to help you learn to: \n\nRenew and practice compassion through gratitude\, self-appreciation\, and savoring\nDevelop ways to deal with challenging emotions with greater ease\nMotivate yourself with kindness rather than criticism\n\nJoin us to polish and treasure the jewel that exists at the heart of our being. Consider inviting your friends\, co-workers\, and relations so you can all support each other in self-care! \nCost\nThe cost for this workshop series is tiered according to a pay-as-you-are-able structure. This enables us to offer workshops in a financially sustainable way while creating accessibility for those without financial means to attend\, as well as opportunities for generosity for those who would like to support others’ attendance. \n$45 – Friend \n$85 – Supporter \n$115 – Champion \n$145 – Visionary \nWe are committed to accessibility and sincerely wish for all who wish to attend our workshops to be able to do so\, regardless of financial means. If the lowest ticket price is not affordable for you\, please submit a scholarship request. \nYour generous donations make our scholarship program possible. If you have the means\, please consider donating to our scholarship fund to enable others to attend who otherwise would not be able to do so.
