SUMMARY:Adapting to Life with Wildfire in Our Region
DESCRIPTION:The Jefferson Center Program Committee is pleased to invite you to our next\nsalon/discussion Sunday\, January 9 at 4 pm on Zoom (meeting will open at 3:40 p.m.) \nTo Access Link to Register\, Please visit https://thejeffcenter.org/salon-future-events \nHere we go again! Smoke…and another fire! What should we do? \nCharisse Sydoriak will lead an informational discussion on “What is it like to live in a fire-\nadapted community (FAC)?” To gain a deeper appreciation of how we can live with\nwildfire\, she will introduce the basics of wildfire dynamics\, define key terms\, and identify\ncomponents of a FAC. We’ll then delve into 5 of 10 FAC components: mitigating fire\npotential\, engaging the community\, reducing vulnerabilities at home\, response strategies\,\nand personal safety. Charisse looks forward to hearing the group’s thoughts and ideas on\nhow to overcome challenges and leverage opportunities so that Southern Oregon can\nbecome a truly fire-adapted community. \nCharisse Sydoriak was a pioneer in monitoring fire effects and using fire as a\nmanagement tool\, starting in Yosemite National Park in 1980. She’s\nmanaged hundreds of prescribed natural fires\, trained burn bosses\, served on\nseveral incident management teams\, and was the first female regional fire\nmanagement officer in the National Park Service. \nDuring her career\, she was chief of resources management and research at\nLava Beds and Bandelier National Monuments\, and at Sequoia and Kings Canyon National\nParks. For 7 years she facilitated science integration in the BLM. Charisse retired in\nDecember 2015 after 35 years of federal service. \nIn April 2019\, Charisse joined the Ashland Wildfire Safety Commission. After the 2020\nAlmeda Fire she co-founded the Ashland Volunteer Wildfire Risk Assessment Program to\neducate residents and motivate wildfire risk reduction in Ashland. She is also a member of\nthe Medford Wildfire Mitigation Steering Committee. Charisse’s views at this event are\nher own and do not represent the cities of Ashland or Medford\, Oregon.

SUMMARY:ORD2 Indivisible's Jan. 6th Day of Remembrance
DESCRIPTION:Please join ORD2 Indivisible on the Ashland Plaza for a candlelight vigil at 5:30 on 1/6/22. Bring a sign that is lit\, or will glow in the dark\, that gives the message to Protect Our Democracy. Please wear a mask! \nNo matter our color\, background or party\, most of us believe that people who betray our nation and endanger our lives have no business governing in our name.\nOn January 6\, a faction of elected officials turned their backs on America by inciting armed right-wing militants to attack our Capitol and then tried to block an investigation to cover up their role in this violence. \nThis was a violent and deadly attack on all Americans – on our country\, our democracy\, and our freedom as voters\, to choose the leaders that represent us so that we have a government of\, by\, and for the people. \nMounting evidence shows that some elected leaders aided in the planning of this attack. These same lawmakers are continuing to spread daily lies about the validity of the 2020 election to keep their supporters engaged and enraged\, which has led to death threats and violence against public officials. \nThe same faction that attacked our country on January 6th has been hard at work restricting our freedom to vote\, attacking fair districts\, preventing accountable and balanced branches of government\, while quietly preparing for future attempts to sabotage fair elections and our democracy. \nSo this January 6\, exactly one year later\, people all across the country are holding candlelight vigils to say:\nWe are One America. We can never let this happen again. Last year\, Americans across the country turned out to make sure our votes were counted so that the will of the people prevailed. \nThe U.S. Senate and President Biden must act now to pass legislation that will protect and strengthen our democracy.

SUMMARY:Connecting Student Debt and Militarism
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, January 4\, join CODEPINK Congress as we discuss the movement to forgive student debt\, and why it’s a necessary part of building a strong movement against militarism. “Can’t afford debt forgiveness”? \nRegister for this Zoom event here \nWe’ve heard that line before\, while Congress barely blinks as it passes a $778 billion military budget. Our runaway military budget robs us of resources to meet needs at home\, including education\, health care\, housing and more. Foreign policy is domestic policy\, and vice versa. \nAuthor and progressive activist Marianne Williamson warns that the Biden administration and Democratic Party must stop dragging their feet on student loan forgiveness\, minimum wage reform and COVID relief — or face defeat in the midterms. President Biden has paused student debt repayment until May\, but a pause is not enough. \nAs our other guest\, Braxton Brewington\, writes: “Debt cancellation would be one of the largest bottom-up economic stimulants in U.S. history\, creating millions of jobs and boosting annual GDP by up to $108 billion per year for the next ten years.”\nAs student loan debt tops $1.7 trillion\, 43 million people suffer financial and mental hardship long after their college years. Some turn to military service to pay off their loans\, trading one hardship for another. With so many students in debt\, working and going to school\, there’s little time on- or off-campus for activism. To keep our students in debt is to keep them quiet…but only for so long!

SUMMARY:Solidarity Collective: Bajo Fuego Event
DESCRIPTION:Register for the film screening of “Bajo Fuego” followed by a conversation with one of our partners from Colombia COCCAM (National Coordinator of Growers of Coca\, Marijuana and Poppy). \nGet your ticket here \nThis timely event is an opportunity for students\, grassroots organizations\, and community members to learn from indigenous\, black and small farmers on the ground about the current violation of human rights in Colombia\, especially in the cocoa-growing region of Cauca after the non-compliance of the peace accords signed in 2016. We’ll analyze the transcendental U.S. policy role\, how communities are organizing to combat environmental destruction\, displacement\, assassination of social leaders and will hear about solidarity and what we can do to promote human-centered US economic and political policies towards Colombia. \nWe’ll be co-hosting this event along with other grassroots organizations in the United States.
