We’ll explore how residents can best work with city staff and local elected officials to help identify and drive forward with solutions. We’ll sharpen up on both the practical how-to’s of civic engagement in Ashland\, as well as the broader issue of how we can all work to strengthen leadership capacity in the community itself.

SUMMARY:Solidarity Collective: Bajo Fuego Event
DESCRIPTION:Register for the film screening of “Bajo Fuego” followed by a conversation with one of our partners from Colombia COCCAM (National Coordinator of Growers of Coca\, Marijuana and Poppy). \nGet your ticket here \nThis timely event is an opportunity for students\, grassroots organizations\, and community members to learn from indigenous\, black and small farmers on the ground about the current violation of human rights in Colombia\, especially in the cocoa-growing region of Cauca after the non-compliance of the peace accords signed in 2016. We’ll learn about the situation of these communities after accessing crop substitution as part of the drug war policies in Colombia and the consequences of forced eradication through the use of glyphosate\, a Monsanto product declared to be carcinogenic by the World Health Organization in 2015. We’ll analyze the transcendental U.S. policy role\, how communities are organizing to combat environmental destruction\, displacement\, assassination of social leaders and will hear about solidarity and what we can do to promote human-centered US economic and political policies towards Colombia. \nWe’ll be co-hosting this event along with other grassroots organizations in the United States. If your organization is interested in co-hosting this event\, please reach out to pao@solidaritycollective.org.

SUMMARY:Int'l Day of Action: Militarism and Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:From International FOR: \nThe International Fellowship of Reconciliation\, a spiritual based peace movement founded over a century ago to overcome war and the Culture of Violence and to implement a Culture of Peace\, Justice and Truth through nonviolence\, is pleased to invite all of you to join efforts to act for Climate. Living in justice includes protecting the Earth\, which is the basis of life for all living beings. \nMilitarism Drives Climate Catastrophe \nIFOR Global Day of Action is to focus on the field of militarism and the comprehensive war system and is made out of different initiatives which can be undertaken by individuals and groups and that are connected to #compassion #accountability and #change and rooted in nonviolence. War\, production of armaments\, militarization of the territory\, military investment\, security are some of the topics which can be addressed through in person\, virtual\, informal\, institutional initiatives. \nClimate change is connected to Peace issues\, in particular this is evident in the field of armed conflict.\n \nWar has a direct impact on the ground\, also causing destruction on the land\, contamination\, pollution and reducing or destroying crops\, livestock farming and healthy water sources. \nIFOR is now urging to put the spotlight on a significant aspect that has a global impact\, and that is: “The environmentally and climate destructive effects of all activities in the military sector” and on the following demands: \n1. Disclose the destructive impacts by the military based on hard facts\,\n2. Data collection and full transparency on the military’s carbon footprint\,\n3. Mandatory reporting of all military GHG emissions in line with the UN Framework Convention (Paris Agreement\, 2015) in the respective national climate reports\n4. Inclusion of military GHG emissions in further climate negotiations\,\n5. End war. \nThe production of weapons often requires the retrieval of often exploited resources and often involves waste products and pollution. The use of weapons itself has negative consequences for the environment. One of the most striking examples is nuclear weapons\, the production\, testing\, storage and use of which pose a constant danger to humankind and the entire planet\, to the point of devastating and irreparable consequences. \nThe militarisation of the territory and the actions of armed groups also cause devastation in the environment in which people live\, leading to unbearable and harmful living conditions. In addition\, many violent conflicts are generated to gain control over resources\, often in resource-rich countries\, usually in the global south. \nInvestment in armaments and the military is immoral both because it is an investment in the destruction of living beings and territory and because it displaces resources needed to protect and safeguard the environment and life on the planet. There are many urgent investments to prevent catastrophes and to repair the damage already caused\, and as long as security is thought to be provided by the military\, catastrophe will continue. \nThe security of individuals and of the planet that hosts us is determined by “care for our common home”\, by respect for the environment and for resources\, and by using them sparingly and not selfishly or in the interests of the few. \nNonviolence highlights the need for and usefulness of alternative choices to those of a Culture of Violence\, choices that engage all social actors\, choices aimed at preserving all forms of life and repairing forms of injustice and inequity among the inhabitants of the Earth. \nThink\, Plan\, Act!\n\nRegister here your initiative and let people know about it and join you! \nAll initiatives will be posted on the IFOR dedicated web page and Facebook page to invite everyone to join in the Global Day of Action on Climate Catastrophe\, right before COP26 starts in Glasgow\, Scotland.

SUMMARY:Segaki Ceremony and Memorial Service
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, Oct 27 at 7 p.m.\, the Ashland Zen Center will host a candlelit ceremony for all hungry ghosts\, and a memorial service for loved ones who have died. \nFrom Ashland Zen Center: \nA Gaki\, hungry ghost\, is a miserable being with a tiny\, constricted throat too narrow to swallow anything and a painfully swollen belly that aches with hunger and thirst. We all have hungry ghosts in our lives and perhaps in our hearts. At Segaki we offer all gaki spiritual nourishment to relieve their suffering. \nWe offer the Hungry Ghosts spiritual sustenance to relieve their torment. Coming together in the dark and the cold\, we also bring light and remembrance to those we love who have died\, through our annual memorial service. Segaki will take place under illuminated canopies on the grounds of Ashland Zen Center\, 740 Tolman Creek Road. All are welcome. Dress warmly\, and wear a COVID-safe face mask while on Ashland Zen Center property. \nMemorial \nTo add names to the annual memorial: Write loved ones’ names on the “Great Abiding Friends” registry BEFORE October 27. This scroll is at the Zen Center\, 740 Tolman Creek Road. If you are at a distance\, email names to ino@ashlandzencenter.org\nThe COVID Memorial will take place during the annual memorial service this year. The assembly will participate in speaking aloud the names of 2\,100 people who have died of COVID-19 since the Pandemic started. This bears witness to the 700\,000 who have perished\, holding those we don’t know with those we name. Learn more about the COVID Memorial Flags: COVID Memorial Flags \nFood Donation \nTo donate food to the hungry: Bring non-perishable food items to the Zen Center for feeding the living\, hungry beings in our Rogue Valley. The basket for food donations is on the porch of the Zen Center\, 740 Tolman Creek Road. Food will be collected until the ceremony\, then distributed locally through the Food Bank. \nSegaki Notes \nArrive at the Segaki canopies at 7:00 pm. Allow time for parking. You may need to walk a short way if the Zen Center parking lot is full. A period of silent meditation (zazen) in our chairs will begin at 7:10pm. Latecomers will be seated at the back. The Segaki Ceremony will follow zazen.\nBring a flashlight (there will be some available to share)\nBring a noisemaker or musical instrument. Hungry ghosts feel unworthy of spiritual community and are attracted to harsh sounds so when we invite them to join us we yell and make a lot of noise. \nFor more information\, please visit: https://www.ashlandzencenter.org/segaki/ \n

SUMMARY:SOCAN: Solar Projects You Can Plug-in To
DESCRIPTION:Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN) and the Ashland Climate Action Project invite you to a presentation by local solar energy enthusiasts Tuesday\, October 26 from 6-7 p.m. Presenters include Jim Hartman from Ashland Solar Cooperative and Ray Sanchez-Pascador\, from Solarize Rogue. \nAccording to SOCAN\, “One of the most effective actions individuals can take to address the climate crisis is to electrify their lives as much as possible. While this is very effective\, even if our electricity is produced in a fossil fuel-powered generation facility\, it is even more effective if our electricity is generated by solar panels\, wind turbines or other fossil-free means. Unfortunately\, not everyone owns their own home\, or has a South-facing roof on which to install the panels.” \n“Ray Sanchez-Pescador with Solarize Rogue will discuss successful efforts to provide community members the opportunity to own solar panels that are not installed on their roof but generate electricity that replaces what they take from the grid that might have otherwise been generated in a fossil fuel-powered generation plant. Jim Hartmann from the ‘Ashland Solar Cooperative’ will then discuss how this group is collaborating with Solarize Rogue and planning to bring the option of community solar projects to the Ashland community.” \nThe program will be held via ZOOM and is open to the public. There is no charge for joining the meeting\, but participants must register. \nClick Here to Register \n  \n

SUMMARY:Businesses Taking Action: SOCAN Introduces Program
DESCRIPTION:September 28th at 6:00 pm\, Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN) will introduce their Businesses Taking Action program\, explain how it achieves its purpose\, and provide an opportunity for three recognized businesses to discuss what they are doing and why. \nThe group has coordinated a panel including OSU student Gabriela Safay who developed the program as a SOCAN Intern\, Constance Palaia from Motel del Rogue (http://moteldelrogue.com/)\, Anne Carter from the Medford Food Coop (https://medfordfood.coop/)\, and Erin Douglas from Banyan Botanicals (https://www.banyanbotanicals.com/). \nThe Zoom program is free and open to the public but attendees need to Register at https://bit.ly/Businesses-Taking-Action to receive the URL for the meeting. A video of the program will be available after the presentation on the SOCAN website. \nWhich businesses should we support? \nMany in the business community attempt to conduct their operations in line with their personal values. This can involve being responsible for environmental protection or maintaining a business climate of social justice both in terms of employees and customers. Through its ‘Businesses Taking Action’ project\, Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN) seeks to provide businesses displaying environmental and social justice sensitivity with the recognition they deserve while also providing potential customers the opportunity to use this information when deciding which business to support.
