DESCRIPTION:Rogue Action Center will facilitate a free de-escalation training tin two parts: January 20 and 27th from  5:30 – 7:30 pm on Zoom. \n“The RAC facilitates de-escalation training for community members to support local movements for social justice\, and coordinates a volunteer team of de-escalators which helps de-escalate conflicts\, potential violence and minimize disruptions from those who oppose movements for justice. Trained de-escalators can provide support to events and demonstrations in our region to help keep all members of our community safe in the face of growing right wing/white supremacist threats.

We’re holding a de-escalation training over two evenings this month–Thursdays\, January 20th & 27th from 5:30-7:30pm–for folks interested in plugging into this work and learning more about de-escalation. DESCRIPTION:This MLK Day\, the Varsity Theater in Ashland will screen “Selma” at 12:30 and 6:30 p.m. on Monday\, January 17. \n“Selma\,” as in Alabama\, the place where segregation in the South was at its worst\, leading to a march that ended in violence\, forcing a famous statement by President Lyndon B. Johnson that ultimately led to the signing of the Voting Rights Act.\n\nSelma is a 2014 historical drama film directed by Ava DuVernay and written by Paul Webb. It is based on the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches initiated and directed by James Bevel[5][6] and led by Martin Luther King Jr.\, Hosea Williams\, and John Lewis. The film stars actors David Oyelowo as King\, Tom Wilkinson as President Lyndon B. Johnson\, Tim Roth as George Wallace\, Carmen Ejogo as Coretta Scott King\, and Common as Bevel. \nSelma premiered at the American Film Institute Festival on November 11\, 2014\, began a limited US release on December 25\, and expanded into wide theatrical release on January 9\, 2015\, two months before the 50th anniversary of the march. The film was re-released on March 20\, 2015 in honor of the 50th anniversary of the historical march. \nThe film was nominated for Best Picture and won Best Original Song at the 87th Academy Awards. It also received four Golden Globe Award nominations\, including Best Motion Picture – Drama\, Best Director and Best Actor\, and won for Best Original Song.[7]

What should we do? \nCharisse Sydoriak will lead an informational discussion on “What is it like to live in a fire-\nadapted community (FAC)?” To gain a deeper appreciation of how we can live with\nwildfire\, she will introduce the basics of wildfire dynamics\, define key terms\, and identify\ncomponents of a FAC. We’ll then delve into 5 of 10 FAC components: mitigating fire\npotential\, engaging the community\, reducing vulnerabilities at home\, response strategies\,\nand personal safety. Charisse looks forward to hearing the group’s thoughts and ideas on\nhow to overcome challenges and leverage opportunities so that Southern Oregon can\nbecome a truly fire-adapted community. \nCharisse Sydoriak was a pioneer in monitoring fire effects and using fire as a\nmanagement tool\, starting in Yosemite National Park in 1980. She’s\nmanaged hundreds of prescribed natural fires\, trained burn bosses\, served on\nseveral incident management teams\, and was the first female regional fire\nmanagement officer in the National Park Service. \nDuring her career\, she was chief of resources management and research at\nLava Beds and Bandelier National Monuments\, and at Sequoia and Kings Canyon National\nParks. For 7 years she facilitated science integration in the BLM. Charisse retired in\nDecember 2015 after 35 years of federal service. \nIn April 2019\, Charisse joined the Ashland Wildfire Safety Commission. After the 2020\nAlmeda Fire she co-founded the Ashland Volunteer Wildfire Risk Assessment Program to\neducate residents and motivate wildfire risk reduction in Ashland. These same lawmakers are continuing to spread daily lies about the validity of the 2020 election to keep their supporters engaged and enraged\, which has led to death threats and violence against public officials. \nThe same faction that attacked our country on January 6th has been hard at work restricting our freedom to vote\, attacking fair districts\, preventing accountable and balanced branches of government\, while quietly preparing for future attempts to sabotage fair elections and our democracy. \nSo this January 6\, exactly one year later\, people all across the country are holding candlelight vigils to say:\nWe are One America. Foreign policy is domestic policy\, and vice versa. \nAuthor and progressive activist Marianne Williamson warns that the Biden administration and Democratic Party must stop dragging their feet on student loan forgiveness\, minimum wage reform and COVID relief — or face defeat in the midterms. President Biden has paused student debt repayment until May\, but a pause is not enough. \nAs our other guest\, Braxton Brewington\, writes: “Debt cancellation would be one of the largest bottom-up economic stimulants in U.S. history\, creating millions of jobs and boosting annual GDP by up to $108 billion per year for the next ten years.”\nAs student loan debt tops $1.7 trillion\, 43 million people suffer financial and mental hardship long after their college years. Some turn to military service to pay off their loans\, trading one hardship for another. With so many students in debt\, working and going to school\, there’s little time on- or off-campus for activism. To keep our students in debt is to keep them quiet…but only for so long!

Erin is passionate about working to turn the tide on climate change. \nCynthia Holm\, a professional Environmental\, Health\, and Safety (EHS) manager and educator for over 30 years\, has experiences ranging from chemical manufacturing to military service. Cynthia\, a 2021 graduate\, currently serves as EHS Manager and Green Team Coordinator at the Providence Medford Medical Center. Cynthia will share her experiences helping Providence confront climate change!\nFlavia Franco attended a book tour talk by Paul Hawken on Project Drawdown. Hawken’s advice was to influence others – whatever that looks like. Flavia\, a 2021 MCP graduate\, is looking forward to how Hawken’s next book – Regeneration; Ending the climate crisis in one generation – will influence thinking and actions for years to come. Flavia will discuss her role in Southern Oregon Food Solutions\, a spinoff of Project Drawdown and the Southern Oregon Pachamama Alliance Community. \nSOCAN’s Master Climate Protector has been offered each year since 2017. The course provides participants a science-based understanding of the basics of climate change\, its consequences\, and what we can do to address the climate crisis. It runs for ten-weeks\, with a weekly three-hour class. The 2022 session\, starting on Wednesday February 9\, will be offered via ZOOM and is open for registration. In addition to our regular scholarship offer\, this is the first year we include the Robert J. Scheelen Memorial Scholarship as a full scholarship. He has taught at Harvard\, Princeton\, Rutgers\, and the Rhode Island School of Design. For six years he worked in the New Jersey prison system as a teacher\, organizer\, and administrator. A longtime student of Indigenous languages\, he was the founder of the Native Cultures of the Americas seminar at Harvard University. \n\n\n\n\nRichard Falkwas on the faculty at Princeton for forty years. Since then he has been affiliated with Queen Mary University\, London\, and for the last twenty years with UC Santa Barbara.
