SUMMARY:Tell the Banks: No Line 3 Pipeline
DESCRIPTION:Next Friday\, June 16\, climate activists will hold brief vigils at the Ashland branches of three Wall Street banks that are financing Enbridge’s Line 3 tar sands pipeline. Participants will gather at 9 a.m. in the Ashland Plaza\, then proceed to Chase\, Wells Fargo and Bank of America. \nThis local action will be one of many actions across the nation between July 12th and 18th\, as a strategy in pressuring the mega banks to not renew financing that is expiring at the end of July. The movement is led by Indigenous leaders whose ancestral and sacred lands in northern Minnesota face desecration and destruction with the new pipeline construction. \nLine 3 will be an enlarged replacement for a dangerously deteriorated existing pipeline that brings Canadian tar sand bitumen—the dirtiest form of oil—to Gulf Coast refineries. The targeted banks are major lenders to Enbridge. Some of their loans are about to come due\, and the goal is to persuade the banks not to renew them. \nThese local actions are being planned by Peace House and South Mountain Friends Meeting (Quakers). Other organizations\, including SOCAN\, are welcome to join as sponsors.

SUMMARY:SOCAN Monthly Meeting: Climate Change Communication
DESCRIPTION:Southern Oregon Climate Action Now is excited to devote our monthly meeting program to a presentation by Dr. Jennifer Marlon\, Research Scientist with the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication.  Dr. Marlon will identify tactics that we might consider using as we try to discuss climate science with those less convinced than we are. \nFrom SOCAN: “When we engage with individuals on touchy issues\, it is always preferable to know where our conversation partner stands and adjust our approach accordingly.  In exploring attitudes of Americans to the conclusions of climate science\, the Yale Program has reported that Americans fall into one of six categories.  This underlines the reality that how we engage in discussions with individuals will depend on their attitudes.  Jennifer will explore how we can adjust our approach depending on the preconceptions of the person with whom we are engaging.” \nThe program is scheduled for Tuesday June 29th from 6:00 – 7:30 pm.  It will be free and accessible via ZOOM. To register and receive the URL\, visit the SOCAN calendar at https://socan.eco/events/.

SUMMARY:Bridging the gaps: Traditional Ecological Knowledge & Contemporary Science
DESCRIPTION:Join us on this year-long learning adventure in our Love Where You Live webinar series.  Once a month we will host a guest speaker sharing their knowledge and experiences that highlight unique qualities of the KS that are the crux of why we love where we live and why conservation in this region is important. \nFor the 9th talk in the series\, we will discover how the Klamath River Basin supports the highest diversity of lamprey species of any single watershed in the world\, with the anadromous Pacific lamprey suggested to have been the river’s biomass-dominant fish species historically. Ecologically\, Pacific lamprey are important contributors of marine-derived nutrients and organic matter to the food web of headwater streams which are far inland from the Pacific Ocean. They also are a primary food source for marine mammals and likely a trophic level buffer to some species of migrating salmon as marine mammals preferentially consume Pacific lamprey. Culturally\, Pacific lamprey are a tribal trust fish species protected under tribal treaty and continue to provide direct subsistence when other high lipid foods (e.g.\, salmon) are unavailable to Native American Tribes. With a winter run-timing\, lamprey provide high caloric values (2x-4x kcal/g of salmonids) for indigenous people coinciding with the coldest season of the year. \nOur Guest Speaker is Keith Parker\, Yurok Tribe Senior Fisheries Biologist. Keith received a Bachelor of Science degree in Fisheries Biology in 2015 from Humboldt State University (HSU) and a Master of Science degree in Natural Resources (Fisheries) from HSU in 2018 with a thesis on conservation genetics. He examined the spatiotemporal genetic structure of Klamath River Pacific lamprey using high-throughput genetic sequencing and discovered two new ecotypes of “eels”\, naming them using words from the Yurok language. His goal is to be a catalyst for positive environmental change by being a “translator” in bridging the gaps between traditional ecological knowledge and modern science.

SUMMARY:Compassionate Listening Training
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, June 18th The Hearth will offer a FREE “Compassionate Listening Gathering”—a restful\, restorative\, connecting time for all of us to cultivate the skills and sensibilities of deep listening. In My Grandmother’s Hands therapist and author Resmaa Menakem depicts trauma as “a wordless story our body tells itself about what is safe and what is a threat.” This traumatic story keeps us feeling anxious\, defensive\, isolated\, trapped. The work\, according to Menakem\, is to “metabolize our pain.” Listening compassionately to one another is one way we digest our suffering and activate our capacity to heal. This free online gathering will offer teaching\, exercises\, and small groups for experiencing and embodying compassionate listening. Please join us. \nRegister for this event here: https://thehearthcommunity.com/event/compassionate-listening-gathering/ \n

SUMMARY:Wayne Morse Gala: Keynote Jaime Harrison
DESCRIPTION:12th Annual Virtual Wayne Morse Gala\nFeaturing DNC Chair Jaime Harrison and Senator Ron Wyden \n“In 2013\, Jaime was elected the first African American chair of the South Carolina Democratic Party\, a position he held until 2017\, when he was appointed by DNC Chair Tom Perez as an Associate Chair of the DNC. In 2020\, Jaime ran for the U.S. Senate from South Carolina\, building a national grassroots movement and setting a fundraising record for the most raised by a Senate candidate. As North America’s largest weapons expo\, CANSEC typically brings together 12\,000+ government and military officials and weapons industry reps from 55 countries to Ottawa each year. Due to the coronavirus pandemic and pressure from our coalition\, CANSEC 2020-2021 has been postponed to 2022. But that doesn’t mean our work is over. We’re demanding the permanent cancellation of CANSEC and also drawing attention to the fact that CANSEC is a symptom of a larger problem – Canada’s and the world’s complicity in the global arms trade and the institution of war. \nInstead of pouring trillions into weaponry\, the world must invest in a just recovery from the pandemic and a green new deal that includes a just transition for arms industry workers. #NoWar2021 will bring together key international allies to not only assist Canadian efforts to permanently #CancelCANSEC but also to share expertise from similar campaigns worldwide in the global struggle for war abolition. \nPanels\, discussion groups\, workshops\, and trainings will cover a range of topics\, such as: how to shut down a weapons expo\, weapons in space\, the global arms trade\, war’s environmental footprint\, divestment\, digital storytelling\, nonviolent civil resistance\, and more.

SUMMARY:Representing Radicals: CLDC Webinar
DESCRIPTION:May 23\, 2021\n2:00 p.m. PT — 3:30 p.m. PT \nWebinar–information provided upon registration \n\n\n\nRegister HERE on Eventbrite\nAre you or your comrades facing criminal charges related to your political actions or associations? Are you having trouble communicating with your lawyer about your political principles\, legal goals\, or personal priorities? Or\, are you an attorney representing activists and unsure of how to work with them? \nJoin us for a presentation from the Tilted Scales Collective on key points from their new book\, Representing Radicals\, with additional insight from Lauren Regan\, executive director of the Civil Liberties Defense Center (CLDC). \nRepresenting Radicals helps lawyers understand ways to work with radical defendants\, with an explicit focus on how to help them achieve ends that go beyond traditional legal goals. The book can be a useful bridge for radicals when they are working alongside a legal team. In this presentation\, they will explore what it means to take a movement perspective when handling criminal charges and how defendants and lawyers can work in partnership to the benefit of movements. \nRepresenting Radicals is a follow-up to the Tilted Scales Collective’s first book\, A Tilted Guide to Being a Defendant. \nThe Tilted Scales Collective works with radical defendants and movement lawyers to fight state repression. They are anarchist legal workers who have spent years organizing in solidarity with defendants fighting their charges and with prisoners fighting for their dignity and lives. Their organizing has included being part of defense committees for defendants facing state repression\, conducting webinars and trainings for groups of defendants\, and collaborating with other groups to engage the criminal legal system in ways that can advance radical struggles. Find out more at tiltedscalescollective.org or @_TiltedScales (Instagram/Twitter). \nYou can learn more about Representing Radicals\, or buy a copy\, here. \nReserve your ticket for this event and we’ll send livestream details on the day of the event. Tickets are available either free or by donation\, and all ticket donations will be given to the (CLDC).
