SUMMARY:MLK Day 2024: Ashland Armory
DESCRIPTION:On Monday January 15\, join community members for Southern Oregon’s Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.\, Holiday Celebration from noon to 1:30 p.m.\, at the Historic Ashland Armory in downtown Ashland. The event is free and open to the public. \nCome celebrate Dr. King’s legacy and our diverse and vibrant community. Seating is limited and available on a first come basis. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. This is a family event and all ages are welcome. Admission is free\, but donations are welcome. We encourage everyone to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to the SOU Food Pantry. The event is sign-language interpreted. \nFor those who cannot attend\, the event will be live-streamed here on somlk.org and on RVTV’s YouTube channel. \nThis year\, the celebration’s theme is “We Choose Love! Now more than ever\, the DREAM must continue.” \nThis year’s Keynote speech will be delivered by historian\, educator\, and longtime host\, D.L. Richardson. \nThe celebration will include messages from faith leaders in the valley\, and performances by the Ashland School District Middle School Choir\, the Rogue Valley Peace Choir\, BASE Youth Dancers\, spoken word from area students\, and The Friends of Bishop Mayfield Band who will perform a tribute to the beloved local blues legend. There will also be a slideshow presentation on the need for the Civil Rights Movement\, as we celebrate the landmark 1964 Civil Rights Act\, sixty years later \nFinally\, in keeping with a long-time tradition\, we will march from the Armory to the downtown Plaza to hear Dr. King’s original\, “I have a Dream\,” speech\, where the Kirby Shaw Singers will perform.

SUMMARY:BASE: Juneteenth in Medford 2023
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, June 17\, 2023\, BASE will host the 3rd Annual Southern Oregon Juneteenth Celebration at Pear Blossom Park in Medford from 11am – 7pm. This family-friendly event will be an outdoor cultural celebration for the entire community featuring food\, education\, music\, and live entertainment. \nThis year’s celebration will showcase our region’s expanding roster of Black-owned businesses\, highlight local Black artists and creatives\, and share Black culture. It will provide a platform for community leaders\, and create a fun environment where both youth and adults can commemorate this moment in our history and enrich understanding of our collective journey towards equity. This is a celebration where the whole community can come together. \nThe day-long event will include activities for grownups and children throughout the day. The Kids’ Zone will feature music\, a bouncy house\, face painting\, and games. The mainstage will feature stars from across the Pacific Northwest: DJ Gemineye\, Ekome drumming band\, No BS\, Ratie D\, Tyrone Hendrix\, plus performances from the AfroScoutz youth program. Community leaders including Kamilah Long of The Black Whole\, Kym McKandes\, Pastor of the Living Room Church\, and Abby McKee of Britt Festival will illuminate history and offer inspiration. Raffles\, offered throughout the day\, include the chance to win Britt festival tickets. There will also be vendors\, food trucks\, community organizations\, and other resources. \nJuneteenth\, also known as Freedom Day\, was declared a national holiday in 2021\, and celebrates the emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the United States. Juneteenth\, the longest-running holiday that celebrates the end of American slavery\, commemorates the anniversary date of June 19\, 1865 when Union Army general Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston\, Texas and issued General Order Number 3\, effectively freeing enslaved people in the South. \nLet’s celebrate and have a good time!!!!!
