SUMMARY:SOCAN: How Climate Change is Impacting Oregon Farmers
DESCRIPTION:Southern Oregon farmers exist on the frontlines of climate change. This is because the variables of seasonal temperature and water availability are both dominant factors influencing crop viability and success and are also the primary variables influenced by global warming and its climate change consequences. \nMaud Powell\, with OSU Extension’s Southern Oregon Office in Central Points serves as Associate Professor of Practice in the Small Farms Program. SOCAN’s October monthly general meeting at the Medford Public Library on October 29 from 6:00 – 7:30 will feature a presentation by Maud that explores the impacts of climate change on farmers and ranchers in Southern Oregon\, especially related to their mental health and emotional well-being\, and an Oregon State University Initiative\, ‘Climate Stress and Grief: Building Resilience in Farmers and Ranchers’ that is addressing these concerns. Powell will also share initial findings from qualitative research conducted with Oregon farmers.

SUMMARY:How the Climate Crises are Affecting Our Mental Health & What Can We Do About it?
DESCRIPTION:From Southern Oregon Climate Action Now: \nPresentation by Rev. Liz Olson\, M.Div. BCC (Masters of Divinity\, Board Certified Chaplain) \nThe climate chaos that surrounds us is affecting much more than the natural world\, our economy and our physical health. The changing climate and our apparent resistance to addressing it are also conspiring to affect our mental and psychological health. Rev. Liz Olson serves as a Specialty Chaplain with the in-patient Palliative Care team at Providence Medford Medical Center. With Ken Deveney\, Liz has\, for many years\, led gatherings of SOCAN’s monthly support group ‘Sustaining Climate Activists.’ \nLiz has been speaking nationally on how chaplains can play a role in supporting people and communities to cope with the psychological\, emotional and existential needs that are arising as we are experiencing the different impacts of climate crises. At the Association of Professional Chaplains annual conference in Houston\, TX\, Liz was the first chaplain to present on this topic at such a meeting. Liz was also instrumental in an online webinar produced by Chaplaincy Innovation Lab (Brandeis University) in collaboration with The BTS Center – (supporting “spiritual leadership for a climate-changed world”) \nDuring her presentation\, Liz will discuss why we should be concerned about our mental health as it pertains to climate change considering direct and indirect effects and differences among populations\, particularly people of color\, Indigenous communities and youth. During the second half of the program\, Liz will lead us through some interactive exercises that SOCAN’s support group “Sustaining Climate Activists” uses. \nSOCAN meets monthly in person with speakers on Topics related to climate change. \nThese meetings are free and open to the public. Specific details are posted monthly. \n

SUMMARY:Why We Are Beaver Believers
DESCRIPTION:Besides serving as the state animal\, and the OSU emblem\, Beavers are incredibly valuable components of our natural and managed ecosystems. This is becoming especially evident as climate change compromises water supplies across the landscape. Unfortunately\, beavers can also become a menace for some forest and agricultural operations. As a result\, they have become the subject of meaningful legislation over the last two sessions in Salem\, firstly to provide them some protection and secondly to help landowners learn how to coexist with them. \nDuring SOCCAN’s March open public meeting on Tuesday March 26th\, Jakob Shockey\, founder and Executive Director of Project Beaver will deliver a presentation on Beaver during which he will offer an introduction to the beavers\, followed by a discussion of how they build habitat resilience and water security in the face of climate change. Jakob will round out with a discussion of the challenges they face and ways folks can help. \nThe program is free and open to the public. It will run from 6:00 – 7:30 pm at the Medford Public Library\, 205 S. Central Avenue\, Medford

SUMMARY:SOCAN: What’s Happening to our Douglas firs?
DESCRIPTION:Anyone spending time in the dryer forests of Southern Oregon will have seen the splashes of orange among the healthy green backdrop. These splashes of color portend our future; they represent Douglas firs that are expiring. As the trees die\, the needles lose the healthy green chlorophyll that drives photosynthesis and produce the familiar orange splashes that increasingly dot the skyline of our hills.Extension Forester\, OSU (retired) Max Bennett has been studying this phenomenon for some years. \nBennett will provide an account of his findings and conclusions during the next Southern Oregon Climate Action Now monthly open public meeting. The program will occur on Tuesday August 29 th at 6:00 pm at the Medford Public Library. The presentation is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:SoCAN: Election 2022 – Now What?
DESCRIPTION:Join Southern Oregon Climate Actin Now November 29 to learn about what’s next after midterms.\n\n\nFrom SoCAN:\nElections have consequences; the result of the 2022 mid-term election could be dramatic at all levels. The Yale Program on Climate Change Communication reported that as of February 2022 74% of Oregonians think global warming is happening and 66% are worried about it. The data also suggest that 63% think Congress should do more about it\, while 53% think the President and the Governor should do more.  Nevertheless\, as the election approached\, polls consistently showed that the climate crisis ranked well below other more immediate pocket book issues in the minds of voters across the country\, with an array of other issues featuring more prominently in the public mind as critical to their voting choices. \nWe know that individual action and commitment is critical as a prerequisite for local\, state and federal action\, but even when voters acknowledge the urgency of acting on the climate crisis\, that recognition is not always translated into electoral action. The 2022 mid-terms represented a critical moment when voters were able to express the level of their concern by electing candidates who acknowledge the crisis and commit to action. \nThe November SOCAN general public meeting program will be devoted to exploring the results of the 2022 election and assessing how they hamper or contribute to our local\, state\, and national effort to address the climate crisis. \nDetails\, including registration – SOCAN Calendar

SUMMARY:SoCAN Monthly Meeting: Update from Our Children's Trust
DESCRIPTION:SoCAN’s monthly meeting will feature a presentation by Andrea Rodgers\, Our Children’s Trust Senior Litigation Attorney. \nFrom SoCAN: \nThe youth of the world are those who will suffer most if we fail to address the climate crisis. Our failure to address this crisis is why many young people are angry and others are simply disillusioned. Some\, meanwhile\, have joined forces through the Eugene-based organization\, Our Children’s Trust (OCT)\, to take legal action. This action takes the form of lawsuits against federal and state governments for their failure to acknowledge the responsibility governments have to protect the natural resources they hold in trust for future generations. \nSOCAN’s August monthly meeting will feature aa ZOOM presentation by Our Children’s Trust Senior Litigating Attorney Andrea Rodgers presenting an update on where the legal cases filed by Our Children’s Trust stand\, and what the future seems to hold. \nThere is no charge for joining the ZOOM meeting\, but participants must register. \nRegistration: bit.ly/SOCAN-OCT

SUMMARY:SoCAN Monthly Meeting: Climate Justice 101
DESCRIPTION:Southern Oregon Climate Action Now invites you to join their monthly meeting with the theme: Climate Justice 101. Presentation by Virginia Camberos\, Regional Director of Rogue Valley Unite Oregon and joined by Anahi Cervantes & Jose Antonio Bucio\, Unite Oregon Climate Justice Committee. Erika Bucio will translate for the Spanish-speaking panelists \nSince time immemorial\, vulnerable communities across the globe\, including in the United States\, have suffered disproportionately from the insults resulting from the environmental degradation that inconsiderate and irresponsible behaviors impose on society. It has become increasingly obvious that no proposal designed to address the climate crisis can be effective unless it also incorporates recognition and redress to the years of inequity that have existed. We cannot successfully remedy the climate crisis if our efforts maintain or heighten the social injustice that is already evident throughout our society. \nThe May SOCAN General Meeting will be dedicated to increasing our understanding of what climate justice means and the importance of incorporating climate justice into all we do. \nThere is no charge for joining the ZOOM meeting\, but registration is required. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:SOCAN: Funding Healthy Soils in Oregon
DESCRIPTION:All gardeners and farmers want healthy soil.  One of the best ways to achieve this is through practices that improve soil organic matter.  Regrettably\, we have been degrading our soils for too long and need to adjust our behavior. Fortunately\, doing so may lead to a win-win outcome: healthy soil and crops\, and we may reduce greenhouse gases from the atmosphere – leading to a healthier planet for all life. Because we all tend to be more comfortable doing what we currently do than making a change to unknown territory\, encouraging improved techniques is not always easy and requires incentives. \nThe catch is finding funds to incentivize this change in behavior.  Because of financial resources made available through the United States Department of Agriculture Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities opportunity\, there may be a solution.  Oregon’s Department of Agriculture (ODA) is developing an application for funds from this pool to support farmers who want to enhance their soil health and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. \nAt our next SOCAN Monthly General Meeting on April 26th\, Dr. Mike Badzmierowski\, Soil Health Specialist with ODA will explain the effort underway and discuss how it might work. There is no charge for joining the meeting which will run from 6:00 – 7:00 via ZOOM\, but participants must register.  Farmers interested in learning more should consider attending this program. \nPresentation by Mike Badzmierowski\, Ph.D.\, Oregon Department of Agriculture\, Soil Health Specialist \nRegistration Required: https://bit.ly/SOCAN-April

SUMMARY:SOCAN Monthly Meeting – Greenhouse Gas Emissions: The Ocean Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Presentation by Dr. Bill Gorham\, marine biologist\, Coastal SOCAN leader\, SOCAN Board of Directors member \nSince we are land-dwelling organisms\, we focus on the climate crisis as an atmospheric and terrestrial issue. If we were dolphins\, we’d have a different point of view. Besides causing warming above the ocean\, greenhouse gases also impact our oceans in many ways\, from causing warming and raising the sea level\, to acidifying the entire marine environment and compromising the survival of many ecologically and commercially important marine species. \nDr. Gorham will help us understand how narrow our airborne view of the climate crisis is by presenting the marine underwater view of this global crisis. \nSOCAN meets monthly  with speakers and movies on Topics related to climate change. \nThese meetings are free and open to the public \nRegistration Required Link

SUMMARY:SOCAN: Solar Projects You Can Plug-in To
DESCRIPTION:Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN) and the Ashland Climate Action Project invite you to a presentation by local solar energy enthusiasts Tuesday\, October 26 from 6-7 p.m. Presenters include Jim Hartman from Ashland Solar Cooperative and Ray Sanchez-Pascador\, from Solarize Rogue. \nAccording to SOCAN\, “One of the most effective actions individuals can take to address the climate crisis is to electrify their lives as much as possible. While this is very effective\, even if our electricity is produced in a fossil fuel-powered generation facility\, it is even more effective if our electricity is generated by solar panels\, wind turbines or other fossil-free means. Unfortunately\, not everyone owns their own home\, or has a South-facing roof on which to install the panels.” \n“Ray Sanchez-Pescador with Solarize Rogue will discuss successful efforts to provide community members the opportunity to own solar panels that are not installed on their roof but generate electricity that replaces what they take from the grid that might have otherwise been generated in a fossil fuel-powered generation plant. Jim Hartmann from the ‘Ashland Solar Cooperative’ will then discuss how this group is collaborating with Solarize Rogue and planning to bring the option of community solar projects to the Ashland community.” \nThe program will be held via ZOOM and is open to the public. There is no charge for joining the meeting\, but participants must register. \nClick Here to Register \n  \n

SUMMARY:Businesses Taking Action: SOCAN Introduces Program
DESCRIPTION:September 28th at 6:00 pm\, Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN) will introduce their Businesses Taking Action program\, explain how it achieves its purpose\, and provide an opportunity for three recognized businesses to discuss what they are doing and why. \nThe group has coordinated a panel including OSU student Gabriela Safay who developed the program as a SOCAN Intern\, Constance Palaia from Motel del Rogue (http://moteldelrogue.com/)\, Anne Carter from the Medford Food Coop (https://medfordfood.coop/)\, and Erin Douglas from Banyan Botanicals (https://www.banyanbotanicals.com/). \nThe Zoom program is free and open to the public but attendees need to Register at https://bit.ly/Businesses-Taking-Action to receive the URL for the meeting. A video of the program will be available after the presentation on the SOCAN website. \nWhich businesses should we support? \nMany in the business community attempt to conduct their operations in line with their personal values. This can involve being responsible for environmental protection or maintaining a business climate of social justice both in terms of employees and customers. Unfortunately\, only too often\, such business behavior goes unrecognized and unappreciated. Through its ‘Businesses Taking Action’ project\, Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN) seeks to provide businesses displaying environmental and social justice sensitivity with the recognition they deserve while also providing potential customers the opportunity to use this information when deciding which business to support.

SUMMARY:SOCAN Monthly Meeting: Preparing for Wildfire
DESCRIPTION:As the summers’ sweltering heat reminds us\, fire risk is here and now. Last year’s fires were devastating\, but the consequences of ongoing global warming tells us a repeat is almost inevitable. The message is that while we hope for the best we should prepare for the worst – a return of fire to our neighborhoods. While the fire may be probable\, we are not helpless. The July Southern Oregon Climate Action Now public general meeting will be devoted to a discussion of how we can better prepare for this future. \nJoseph Vaile and Alexi Lovechio will offer tips on how to prepare your family\, home and community for a wildfire emergency using KS Wild’s new Forest & Fire Toolkit. This toolkit is a ‘one stop shop’ for all the resources we need to acquaint ourselves with the forests of the Siskiyou region and how to prepare our home for a wildfire. Included are invaluable resources on how to harden your home and create defensible space\, funding opportunities for home defense\, post fire checklist and financial assistance\, and steps to plan and be ready for a wildfire emergency and evacuation. \nWe know that the Siskiyou region is experiencing warmer temperatures\, with longer periods of dry weather and drought. Increasing residential development into forestlands places more homes and communities at-risk from wildfire. There is no future free from wildfire\, but there are actions we can take to help prepare for the next one. This is an opportunity to learn what we can do. \nLink to Register \nThese meetings are free and open to the public
