SUMMARY:Building for a Resilient Future: How to build carbon negative housing
DESCRIPTION:After stealing her sister’s Legos at the age of 3\, Lydia Doleman became fascinated with building. Lydia has been building with straw and other biobased materials since the early 2000’s. Owner of Earth Dragon Natural Building\, her work focuses on empowering people and communities to build with natural materials\, fosters community connections and creates beautiful high-performance housing. Her work seeks to imbue crafted spaces with the sacredness of natural materials in a way that transforms human habitations into artistic\, ecological symbols of home and belonging. \nAbout a third of Oregon’s regulated greenhouse gas emissions result from the Residential and Commercial Sector. Emissions are generated during building construction (embodied emissions) and during day-to-day operation (operational emissions). By employing appropriate techniques during construction\, builders can reduce both embodied emissions and operational emissions. Indeed\, buildings could be the 6th largest carbon sink. Lydia Doleman’s book “Essential Light Straw Clay Construction” recently published by New Society Publishing is available online. It covers the details of how to build utilizing light straw clay construction. \nMaybe you are likely to be undertaking construction yourself or know someone who is. Maybe not. Either way this program will provide you with valuable understanding and insights into one approach to reducing our greenhouse gas emissions.\nThe SOCAN April Public General Meeting at 6:00 pm on April 28th at the Medford Public Library will feature Lydia Doleman discussing her passion for climate friendly construction and what the benefits are.

SUMMARY:SOCAN’s Ashland CEAP Workshop Series Continues with a session on Compost
DESCRIPTION:In 2017\, the Ashland City Council passed a citizen led policy called the Climate and Energy Action Plan (CEAP). The goals of the plan were to reduce community greenhouse gas emissions and prepare the city to be more resilient to climate change impacts. As the Ashland Climate Collaborative notes on their website: “Eight years in\, the CEAP is still a great foundation for reaching our climate goals.” Over the intervening years\, residential awareness of the CEAP has decreased. In order to reverse that trend\, Southern Oregon Climate Action Now Executive Director Danial Scotton\, has facilitated a series of open public workshops during which aspects of the CEAP are discussed in relation to CEAP goals\, the current status of action\, and what needs to be done. \nThis is thee third workshop in the series will address the subject of Food Waste and Compost. This will be held in the Gresham Room of Ashland Public Library.

SUMMARY:Redefining Sustainability for a Turbulent 21st Century
DESCRIPTION:John Giordanengo\, author of “Ecosystems as Models for Restoring Our Economies\,” is the featured speaker at Southern Oregon Climate Action Now’s February Monthly General Meeting. Drawing from three decades of experience and research in business\, economics\, ecology\, and conservation\, John H. Giordanengo explores the dynamic relationship between three governing components of highly complex systems — diversity\, energy\, and trade — to reveal a novel hypothesis on the structure of sustainable economies. The inspiration for his work is our economy’s sister system\, nature. Giordanengo offers a novel approach to achieving lasting conservation\, recognizing that humanity’s most serious concerns cannot be resolved by just environmental and social advocates. See more.

SUMMARY:Election 2024: What does it mean for climate action?
DESCRIPTION:Submitted by SOCAN \nElections always have consequences. This is especially the case for our potential to address\nthe climate crisis when some candidates for office accept the science of global warming and it\nclimate change consequences while others display something between skepticism and outright\nrejection of science. From the local to the national level the outcomes from the 2024 general\nelection will indicate profoundly whether meaningful action is likely. \nThe Southern Oregon Climate Action Now November General Meeting will focus on an\nexploration of what the election results mean for climate action in the near future. Special guest\nand notable climate champion State Representative Pam Marsh will offer insight regarding what\nthe election outcome means for climate action as we approach the 2025 long session.\nAdditionally\, SOCAN co-facilitator. Alan Journet will explore what the results mean for federal\naction\, Denise Krause will discuss what results mean for the Jackson County Board of\nCommissioners and SOCAN co-facilitator Kathy Conway will do likewise for regional city\nelection results. \nThe meeting is free and open to the public and will occur from 6:00 – 7:30 on Tuesday\nNovember 26 th at the Medford Public Library\, 205 S Central Ave\, Medford.

SUMMARY:SOCAN: Community Conversation at Rogue Climate
DESCRIPTION:From Southern Oregon Climate Action Now \nHelp guide where we go\, engage with like minded people\, and generate new action steps.\nLet’s talk about what matters! Our community conversation event is the perfect opportunity to discuss climate action and sustainability. \nYour voice is valuable—see you there! \nSOCAN is hosting its second Community Conversation event in lieu of our regular September monthly meeting. Due to the Medford library’s large room being under renovation this month\, we’ve chosen to partner with Rogue Climate and bring the event to their office in Phoenix. We are excited to expand the community conversation to include our partners at Rogue Climate\, and we expect a larger turn out this month because of it. This event will also coincide with the NYC Climate Week events\, running from September 22nd through the 26th. You can learn more here. \nIn keeping with the previous community conversation\, this event is focused on creating a space where voices can join in solidarity. Where the community of climate conscious individuals can work from common ground\, and enjoy imagining the possibilities of where our respective movements can help to guide our communities. We hope you’ll join us!
