VisionQuilt: How one group of grandparents is taking action to help prevent gun violence by education and gun safety

Grandparents Against Gun Violence: Our newest partner in Kansas City!

Vision Quilt is thrilled to announce our newest partnership with Grandparents Against Gun Violence (GAGV).

A nonprofit from the Kansas City metropolitan area, GAGV focuses on reducing gun violence at home, at school, and in the community. They have enthusiastically adopted the Vision Quilt program, and GAGV members have begun making panels at home while sheltering-in-place.

“Our goal is to add 100 new panels to Vision Quilt’s national program and to use the panels made by our GAGV members in our local work in the Kansas City area,” explains GAGV board president Judy Sherry. “We are inspired by Vision Quilt and know our partnership will enable us to move closer to achieving our vision that all people in our community are safe from gun violence.”

GAGV Focuses on
Education and Gun Safety

After the 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary, GAGV director Judy Sherry “realized it was time for me to become an activist.” For more about Judy’s passion and GAGV’s history and dedication to preventing gun violence, check out Judy’s guest blog

“The focus and passion of our organization is on educating the public about the various forms of gunviolence and promoting gun safety,” explains Sherry. “We do that through our Lock It For Love project of distributing high-quality gun locks and educational materials at events throughout the metro area. Since July 2018, we have participated in over 115 community events and distributed close to 3,000 locks.”

We are grateful for the dynamic work GAGV is doing in the Midwest, and we are proud to add their panels to Vision Quilt’s Virtual Quilt on our website.
