Please join ORD2 Indivisible on the Ashland Plaza for a candlelight vigil at 5:30 on 1/6/22. Bring a sign that is lit, or will glow in the dark, that gives the message to Protect Our Democracy. Please wear a mask!
No matter our color, background or party, most of us believe that people who betray our nation and endanger our lives have no business governing in our name.
On January 6, a faction of elected officials turned their backs on America by inciting armed right-wing militants to attack our Capitol and then tried to block an investigation to cover up their role in this violence.
This was a violent and deadly attack on all Americans – on our country, our democracy, and our freedom as voters, to choose the leaders that represent us so that we have a government of, by, and for the people.
Mounting evidence shows that some elected leaders aided in the planning of this attack. These same lawmakers are continuing to spread daily lies about the validity of the 2020 election to keep their supporters engaged and enraged, which has led to death threats and violence against public officials.
The same faction that attacked our country on January 6th has been hard at work restricting our freedom to vote, attacking fair districts, preventing accountable and balanced branches of government, while quietly preparing for future attempts to sabotage fair elections and our democracy.
So this January 6, exactly one year later, people all across the country are holding candlelight vigils to say:
We are One America. We can never let this happen again. Last year, Americans across the country turned out to make sure our votes were counted so that the will of the people prevailed.
The U.S. Senate and President Biden must act now to pass legislation that will protect and strengthen our democracy.
