We talk a lot about the military-industrial complex, but what exactly is it, who makes it up, and why are they so important? At this webinar we’re going to look at the effect these companies have on our culture and how their influence has entered the world of sports, movies, charities, universities, and the media.
We’ll be joined by David Swanson, an author, activist, journalist, and radio host. He is executive director of World BEYOND War and campaign coordinator for RootsAction.org. Swanson’s books include War Is A Lie and When the World Outlawed War. He blogs at DavidSwanson.org and WarIsACrime.org. He hosts Talk World Radio. He is a Nobel Peace Prize Nominee.
Swanson was awarded the 2018 Peace Prize by the U.S. Peace Memorial Foundation. He was also awarded a Beacon of Peace Award by the Eisenhower Chapter of Veterans For Peace in 2011.
Marcy Winograd is coordinator of CODEPINK CONGRESS and a long-time antiwar activist. She was a 2020 DNC delegate to Bernie Sanders and co-founded the Progressive Caucus of the California Democratic Party. Marcy’s activism began in high school when she marched against the Vietnam War and later joined the defense team of Pentagon Papers whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg. A retired English and government teacher, she blogs about militarism and foreign policy at LAProgressive.com. She recently written a piece on the effects of military companies on the culture of the University of California at Santa Barbara.
Chris Velazquez is the Digital Organizer for Veterans For Peace and the lead organizer for the Gamers For Peace initiative. Chris was a civil affairs operator in the United States Marine Corps from 2004 to 2010 with combat deployments to Fallujah, Iraq and Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Chris is a life-long gamer, who is committed to using digital gaming and hobby spaces to engage antiwar and social justice activism, while combating the predatory recruiting practices of the military.
